Campus Updates 1/17/2025

Friday 1/17/25

Events and News

Hello all, hope you are having a great week. There’s a lot going on so let’s get started!

We were very lucky this week to learn from historian Moon-Ho Jung from the University of Washington during our celebration of Korean American day. The presentation provided a critical lens regarding the history of Korean Americans in the United States. It was great seeing so many students participating – I was thrilled honestly. The food was delicious…but I think I ate too many Gimmari (fried seaweed rolls)!  Big thanks to Scott and the WAVES team for their great work.

I also really enjoyed attending the Desserts with the Deans event.  It was fun connecting with students and the deans of course.  Hardworking deans need dessert.  Now that I think of it, I think I’m eating too much at these events.

I was also able to stop by the MC winter welcome and chat with a few students as well.  They were doing Karaoke at the time, and I heard a student singing and wow what a great voice!  We have a lot of talented students here!

As you know Monday is MLK Day and the campus will be closed to commemorate the holiday and celebrate Dr King’s Legacy. We have two great events happening next week and I would urge you to join.

  • Dr Paul Harrick will be discussing Dr King’s philosophy in the QDR on Jan 21
  • Edwin Pratt celebration event – we will honor the legacy of local shoreline civil rights leader on January 30th in the PUB

Both events are FREE

Campus Updates 1/10/25

Thursday 1/9/25

Events and News

Hello all and welcome back officially!  It’s a SUNNY Thursday and enrollment is tracking 2.5% up this morning with Domestic enrollment at .6% up from last spring and International Enrollment at 4.5% up from last year’s spring.

It has been a busy week, but great to see some of you out and about.  I’ve been working on completing evaluations and some prep work for the quarter on my end.  I’m looking forward to the ASG event “Dessert with the Deans” later this afternoon.  The Deans definitely deserve dessert (keeping with the alliteration trend).

Yesterday VP Ramos, Sarah Swanberg and I met with representatives from Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity (RARE) to learn more about their mission and to see whether we might work together and with other King County representatives to support black consciousness and collaborations needed to support Black/African American students in K-12 and Community Colleges.  The meeting was really productive, and we look forward to next steps, which likely will include a showing of their powerful documentary “Beyond Black & White”.  Yesterday we also met a very interesting team from Sheridan College in Wyoming who wanted to tour our Cedar building as they are building a new STEM Lab space and are looking for innovative ideas.  Well, they came to the right place!

Our hearts go out to friends and family who have been affected by the Los Angeles fire tragedy.  I know I have been checking on my friends and colleagues often, and I hope your communities are getting the support they need.

Finally, I wanted to share/ reshare our new Community page. If you have any webpages that list events or are of overall community interest –please email Cat Chiappa cchiappa@shoreline.edu

Cheers,

Jack

Network Rewiring and Hardwiring Connection Project Update:

Below is the updated building list of the rewired and hardwired network connections that have been restored and those in progress with expected completion dates. As mentioned at the beginning of this project, most of the building wiring has not been updated for over a decade or more (emphasis on more). During this project, we have already encountered several major issues in the buildings as we run new cabling and test the integrity of previous network connections.  We continue to utilize our third-party vendor (Milne) and expect to be fully completed in early 2025.

DEIA:

Join us in celebration of Korean American Day with Dr. Moon-Ho Jung’s lecture on Framing and Commemorating the History of Koreans in the Pacific Northwest. The talk will be held on Tuesday, January 14th from 12-2 pm at Shoreline Community College in the Main Dining Room (MDR) in Room 9215. We will be serving Korean Street Food from a local business.

Moon-Ho Jung is Professor of History and the Harry Bridges Endowed Chair in Labor Studies at the University of Washington. He is the author of Menace to Empire: Anticolonial Solidarities and the Transpacific Origins of the US Security State (2022), winner of the David Montgomery Award from the Organization of American Historians and the Labor and Working-Class History Association, and the Theodore Saloutos Book Award from the Immigration and Ethnic History Society, and Coolies and Cane: Race, Labor, and Sugar in the Age of Emancipation (2006). He served as the President of the Korean American Historical Society in 2007-2016.

In 2007, Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire signed a bill designating January 13th as “Korean American Day.” This date marks the first arrival of Korean immigrants to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1903. What is the history of this migration? How and why did Koreans move to the United States, and to the Puget Sound region in particular? This talk will suggest a framework for interpreting local history–a critical step in defining our identities and communities.

Campus Updates 1/2/25

Events and News

Hey folks, welcome back!  I don’t have much of an update though I’m glad to share a bit about my time off.  Would you believe my wife and I DROVE down to San Diego over the break?  We stopped along the way to visit family and friends, but it was a long haul.  The weather was atrocious on the way down but super easy coming home.

This week I have just been working on a few items and looking forward to the Dolphin Days event on Friday!  I can’t wait to see new students this quarter.  Stay warm and dry, and see you soon!

Cheers,

Jack

Foundation:

We are updating the SCCF scholarship application process effective for the 25/26 academic year. For the past several months we have been meeting with groups and individuals across campus to ask questions and learn more about how your department/area interacts with the process. After speaking with several departments that have multiple scholarships in their area, we are talking with donors and asking them to update their gift contracts so we can ensure that as many students as possible will benefit from their generosity. This means that we will be combining some funds, and (hopefully) streamlining/simplifying the criteria of others. We also worked with other community college foundations in our area to learn more about how they serve both donors and students. Many of the changes we are making are in keeping with the best practices for college and university foundations and are meant to improve the application and awarding processes of the SCCF scholarship program. This is a big job with a lot of moving pieces, and we appreciate all the folks who have helped us!

In order to help as many students as possible, honor donor wishes, and ensure integrity in awarding, the following changes are being incorporated into the 25/26 SCCF scholarship process:

  • SSCF donor-funded scholarships will be broken into two groups, need-based and merit-based
  • All SCCF donor-funded scholarships that are need-based will require students to have a “valid” FAFSA or WAFSA on file
  • There will only be one scholarship period per academic year – no quarterly scholarships will be offered during the 25/26 academic year – this could change for the 26/27 academic year depending on the availability of funds
  • Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, books, and “educational expenses” (this is a huge change as it will allow students to use scholarship funds for transportation, food, rent, etc.)
  • The SCC Financial Aid department will take over the distribution of funds to provide better transparency and simplification for students of their entire financial aid package

The 25/26 application window will open at the end of January. We will have several information sessions and will be updating the website to better help students. We will keep you posted as we move forward.

Again, thank you to all the folks who have met with us, shared feedback with us, and helped us think through the process! If you would like to discuss these changes or have any questions or comments, please reach out to Wendy.

Campus Updates 12/6/24

Events and News

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving break.  It seems like the time off had a very positive impact on the Executive Team as folks were very relaxed and funny in our weekly meeting this week.  It’s been a pretty packed week both with meetings and getting a start on my supervisee evaluations.  Thank you so much for those providing feedback as part of our 360 process this year.

I was able to attend several events this week which were really great!  Students and staff from our stellar International Education program put on a wonderful celebration to honor United Arab Emirates National Day!   We love our partnership with the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) who worked to bring these students to SCC.

The Pancakes with the President” event was a huge success as well! It was great meeting with some of our University & International partners (Arizona State University, TrainHub, Wichita State University, IELTS Official, Washington State University Pullman EducationUSA, Virginia Commonwealth University and more!) who support our International program!   A big shout out to Alexander Mitu, Samira Pardanani and the team that brought us together for pancakes, learning and collaboration!  Yes, I did actually flip some pancakes and I’m getting pretty good!

And yes, it was SOUPSGIVINGTIME again this year. The competition was tough this year – I made a Mulligatawny soup (extra spicy) which got an honorable mention.  Thank you to Shoreline Community College Foundation celebrity judge John Weber for your culinary judging skills and congrats to Taisa Welhasch for winning the Golden Ladle award for your delicious Ukrainian Borscht and to Pangyen (Ben) Weng for winning the People’s Choice award for the Taiwanese Beef Noodle! Most importantly thank you to all who gave to our students in need. We appreciate it so much.

Cheers,

Jack

Reposting Dr. Kahn’s previous communications to help share this important message:  “On Monday, 12/2, Governor Jay Inslee issued a Directive to freeze state agency hiring, purchases, service contracts, and travel. This is due to a state budget forecast that shows state costs increasing faster than revenue, leading to a multi-billion-dollar operating budget shortfall through 2029.

This Directive does not include nor impact Shoreline Community College (or any of the colleges in our system). The Directive applies to Cabinet Agencies and does not apply to higher education institutions.  As you know we already have positions frozen due to the OFM error but are not looking to freeze any other positions or travel at this time.

As employees and residents of Washington State, we know that we will all feel these impacts through friends and family, the state services we use, and more. We sympathize with those feeling these immediate impacts across Cabinet Agencies and will continue to do our collaborate and do our best work to support SCC through any future challenges.”

Campus Updates 11/22/24

Events and News

Hey folks, I hope everyone is doing well and recovering from the storm. This has been a busy, but engaging week on my end.  I’m definitely having a “I need to make a list, prioritize projects, and prep for some weekend work” kind of weeks.

I had a great meeting late last week with Kara Mora Laveaga, the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle and our VP of DEIA Brian Ramos.  We discussed opportunities for us to partner with the consulate to support Mexican and Mexican-origin students as well as our diverse Hispanic/Latinx community including our wonderful immigrant students. There is much to do, and we are here to do it- more information will be shared as it develops.

As you know this month is Native American Heritage month and I was able to join two great events just this last week.  Pamela SeaMonster from the Snohomish Tribe of Indians shared her traditional storytelling with us. It was really beautiful and moving- I particularly enjoyed the Basket Ogress stories (Our Tulalip colleagues have a cool website description here). Our students and staff were so lucky to have this opportunity to be in this space together. Also, we screened “Our Grandmother the Inlet” by Kaya George and Jaime Leigh Gianopoulos. This short film sheds light on the mental health challenges faced by Indigenous youth and the enduring spirit to reclaim their connection to culture, water, and land. We were so fortunate to have a discussion post-film with Kaya and Jaime, students, staff, and faculty. Thank you to VP Brian Ramos and the DEIA for bringing us both of these special events.

This week we have been celebrating International Week here on campus.  I was able to join IE’s Open House event and did pretty good on the “guess the babies’ game” (matching current baby photos to adult pics of staff).  It was fun getting some tea and catching up with folks.   I missed the coffee and tea event this year unfortunately!!

This week also included the Transgender Day of Remembrance.  This is a day is to commemorate the trans folks who are no longer with us due to anti-trans violence and to encourage us to continue to support our local and broad trans community.  I know in our student post-election get-together recently one student expressed concern about support for non-binary students and I was glad we had many Shoreline folks to connect with them and support their educational journey.

Hey, did you make it to the Clay Club event this week? I told them I come “every year” (which is true, but I don’t have a long trajectory yet)- the work is so beautiful and reasonably priced!  I’m so impressed with the work they do for this event.

Thank you to everyone who got us through the Bomb Cyclone!  I sent a separate email to campus about that, because I wanted to make sure special thanks went out to all those involved with the recovery here on campus.  I truly appreciate all of your efforts.

Be well all.

Cheers,

Jack
