Campus Update 2/20/2025

Events and News

Well, it’s been a few days since I got back from DC and I’m dealing with some kind of flu.  I know a lot of you are struggling as well—hope you all get some rest and Vitamin C!

Last week I was in DC with Trustee Chan and Cat Chiappa meeting with representatives to focus on support for our community colleges with a particular focus on workforce development.  It was great connecting with colleagues from across the states who are so dedicated to community college success!  I also attended the Community Colleges for International Development conference and learned some new ways to support our international students.

I am excited about a new partnership that officially started last week (though we have been working on this one for a while!). It is with the UNITED SEATTLE & BELLEVUE KOREAN SCHOOL. Our mission with our partners at USBKS has been to create a program that will elevate both communities. We are offering Korean language through the USBKS location honoring their many years of language instruction by transforming it into college credits.  I hope you can join us at the celebratory launch!

I want to thank the large groups of folks who have joined virtual meetings to learn more about how the campus is organizing around changes coming from DC.  I really appreciate all the thoughtful questions and the clear dedication our faculty and staff have to our mission.  Also, it was great to get some positive feedback on the multiple projects Dr. Rucks and team are working on.  Believe it or not, several more are in the works which we will update you all on as well.  We are beginning to really amp up innovative ways to increase enrollment through our strategic plan.  It’s very exciting!

It was nice also to hear folks incorporating some humor into our meetings, not to belittle the issues, but to find ways of connecting in times intended to divide us.  I want to also thank Brian Ramos, our VP of DEIA for his kindness, steadfastness, and drive to keep us on mission and finding the best ways to support our students, staff, and faculty during this very challenging time.

Hope to see you on campus or Zoom soon – be well, all.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Update 2/13/2025

Hello campus community,

Jack has been in Washington D.C. advocating for community colleges and battling snowstorms, so no update from him this week.

I know that Jack, along with Cat Chiappa and Trustee Rebecca Chan, had a productive week at the Association for Community College Trustees National Legislative Summit, and were able to meet with Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Jayapal, so I’m sure he will have plenty to report when he returns to campus next week.

As we wind down a week of freezing temps here in West-Coast-Washington, may this pic from East-Coast-Washington make you feel just a little bit warmer.

Wishing everyone a very happy three-day weekend!

Steve

Facilities and Capital Projects

This is a repost of 2/7/25 Campus-wide broadcast email to share this important information. The Roof Replacement projects consist of repairs to building 1000, 2900, 3000, 4000 and 1600.  If you experience any discomfort, please don’t hesitate to contact your supervisor and/or Human Resources to discuss assistance or accommodations. The schedule is as follows.

  • 2/10/25 – 2/17/25
    • 1000 Building Cupolas – Contractor will be removing and replacing cupolas on roof.  There will be minimal noise and vibration.  No impact to the art in the art gallery.  There is a chance of a slight chemical smell when they install the new Cupolas.  SDS is attached.
  • 2/18/25 – 2/28/25
    • 2900 roof gravel replacement and perimeter work – Contractor will remove roof gravel, repair roof, and replace gravel.  There will be a slight vibration over walkways with little to no impact within the building.  There will be slight noise and chemical smell.  Parking on the east side of building (close to wall) will be taken offline while gravel is removed.  SDS is attached.
  • 3/3/25 – 3/14/25
    • 3000 soffit stain work – Contractor will be using a lift and scaffold to apply a stain to the soffit around the building.  They will start on the east side of 3000.  No vehicles can be parked in the parking stalls on the east side of 3000 when they start to apply the stain.  It will take them 1-2 days to complete the work on the NE side of 3000.  SDS is attached.
  • 3/17/25 – 3/28/25
    • 4000 skylight replacement – Contractor will remove existing skylight and replace with new.  There will be noise and chemical smells during this project.  To minimize the impact of dust/sawdust falling within the library, a section inside the 2nd floor will be closed off during the project.  SDS is attached.
  • 3/31/25 – 4/4/25
    • 1600 PMMA and drain replacement – Contractor will be replacing the roof drainage system.  This will require interior and exterior work.  There will be slight noise and chemical smell.  SDS is attached.

The contractor will do their best to minimize noise during this roof project.  Facilities will do their best to minimize any impact to the buildings while chemicals are being used.  This schedule could change slightly since much of this work is weather dependent.  We’ll be working with building occupants if any changes occur.  Feel free to reach out to Facilities if you have any questions.

Windows 11 Upgrade:

In line with Microsoft’s best practices and maintenance plan, we will be upgrading all remaining computers currently using Windows 10 to Windows 11 in the coming weeks. As a reminder, Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. This upgrade will introduce a fresh look and feel to your operating system, along with enhanced features and improved performance. While the transition should be smooth and similar to a regular system update, you may notice some changes in the interface. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this update process. If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out via ticket at support.shoreline.edu

New SMS Texting Feature Now Available in Microsoft Teams:

TSS is excited to announce that the new SMS (texting) feature is now available in Microsoft Teams! This solution is designed for immediate 1-to-1 two-way texting for Shoreline business purposes only. Here are some key details:

Feature Overview:

·        Send and receive text messages directly within Microsoft Teams using your Shoreline telephone number.

·        Integrated conversations ensure a unified experience across chat and SMS.

·        Group messages are supported, though each message counts as an individual text.

·        Currently supports domestic texting only (no international texting).

Eligibility and Cost:

·        Available exclusively to Shoreline users with the purchase of an additional license.

·        Cost: Approximately $14 per user per month (plus any potential overages).

·        Charges will be billed to the user’s department budget.

·        Licenses are assigned by Supervisor request with approval from the corresponding budget owner.

·        Each use case is evaluated and approved by the TSS department.

Text Limit:

·        Each user license includes 500 SMS messages per month (pooled across all organization licenses) with a maximum limit of 1000 messages per month. This avoids the FCC requirement for operational texting and the need to register a college-wide general phone number.

To get started with the texting solution, please read carefully the SMS for Microsoft Teams Guidance for more detailed information.

Once you’ve read the guidance, you (or your supervisor) can fill out the Teams Texting (SMS) Request Form

Network Rewiring and Hardwiring Connection Project Update:

Below is the updated building list of the rewired and hardwired network connections that have been restored and those in progress with expected completion dates. As mentioned at the beginning of this project, most of the building wiring has not been updated for over a decade or more (emphasis on more). During this project, we have already encountered several major issues in the buildings as we run new cabling and test the integrity of previous network connections.  We continue to utilize our third-party vendor (Milne) and expect to be fully completed in early 2025.

Campus Updates 2/6/2025

Events and News

It’s been a tough week this week with the 4:30 a.m. snow-prep calls and the ongoing barrage coming in from DC. I know it has been tough for all of you as well.  Please reach out to your staff and colleagues at this time- particularly those targeted by directives that undermine the work we are doing in our communities to improve and evolve.  I wanted you all to know that I am actively involved in advocating for support for our college and pushing our systems to be more responsive and supportive of our immigrant and LGBTQ communities.  More is needed and certainly more is coming.  I will have a separate communication sharing information about efforts we are working on coming out by early next week.

Our team met in Olympia last week advocating for our budget and ongoing financial support for faculty, staff and students. Chair /Trustee Rebecca Ringer, Trustee Rebecca Chan, Cat Chiappa, staff and union rep Tirzah Williamson and faculty rep Crystal Hess and two awesome students Dèvon Smith and Karina Oliveira Vilela met with representatives Cindy Ryu, Lauren Davis, Jesse Salomon, Derek Stanford’s staff, & Shelley Kloba.  All seemed understanding of our needs and certainly have been great advocates in the past.  We know we are in a very tough budget season, but they seemed to genuinely connect with us—and our students, staff and faculty did such great presentations (I’m sure you aren’t surprised).

A few of us will be in DC next week doing the same kind of advocacy at the Federal level, but focusing on workforce support, Pell expansions, and supporting national advocacy for immigrant populations.  The second half of next week I will also be at the Community Colleges for International Development conference.  I am on their board, and amongst other items will be seeking support and guidance for our International programs and activities.

I know the last few weeks have been challenging and I just want to say how much I appreciate all of your efforts.

Take care of yourselves,

Jack

Campus Updates 1/31/2025

Events and News

Well, it’s been a week.  It started out great, with a lot of wonderful events on campus.

Last week we held our first Academic Appreciation event. The event invited faculty to share their sabbatical projects, classroom innovations, and research with the community. We also recognized our annual faculty award winners to a great crowd of faculty, staff, admin, and students! Thank you to Maiya and Ben in Instruction for this great event!

I really enjoyed attending Ann-Marie Stillion’s gallery reception. Her beautiful images of the male form inspired a wonderful dialogue about art, gender, and community. Thanks to Zach Mazur and his great students who did all the set up and coordination of the show!

Brian Ramos and I stopped by the Black Student Union (BSU), and we were able to meet Ijeoma Oluo who was presenting on her text “Be a revolution”. The students were so inspired and excited by the dialogue! Our BSU is awesome and growing! Thanks to the Multicultural Center and Rashawn Smith, advisor extraordinaire, for the event. We hope to have Ijeoma Oluo back to campus soon!

The rest of the week was exhausting for pretty much everyone in higher education, and other organizations across the country, who were thrown through a loop with confusing directives from the Federal government about grant funding and pausing grant funding then pausing the pause etc.  Thank you so much to the leadership team and folks all around campus for acting quickly with ideas and communications as we navigate this current issue and prepare for others, particularly around supporting our grants that support equity – in particular, supporting our students and employees, who are really feeling it right now.  We have some ideas to help us continue to support this work and go forward – we will of course keep you posted. And we aren’t pausing our equity work around SCC.

Here is a totally unrelated great update about a new partnership if you didn’t see it– between us and Arizona State University- more to come!  https://provost.asu.edu/academic-alliances/newsletter/arizona-state-university-and-shoreline-community-college-partner

Cheers,

Jack

Follow-up: Temporary Pause on Federal Grants and Loans

Further clarification has been received relative to the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB)’s temporary pause on all federal grants and loans, effective today at 2:00pm PST/5:00pm EST.

We have now received confirmation that the federal grant funding pause does not currently affect any type of Title IV federal funding. Title IV funding includes the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Federal Work Study and federal student loans. However, all other federal aid outside of Title IV funding is still unclear. Please note, Washington State aid programs, including Washington College Grant, Washington Bridge Grant, College Bound Scholarship, Passport to Careers, Opportunity Grant and State Work Study, are also not affected.

We have also received word from the Department of Veterans Affairs Education Service that “GI Bill payments do not fall under this order and will continue to be made to schools and students without change.”

At this time, there is no impact to full-time employees funded by federal grants. However, an impact to student and part-time staff positions funded through federal grants is anticipated. Executive Team members are actively working with their respective areas to address this situation.

We will continue to keep you informed to the best of our ability as we receive more information.
