Campus Update 11/8/24

Events and News

Hey everyone, I hope you are doing well.  Last week feels like a month ago or so, but here we are.

We had some really fun events at the end of last week including the annual Halloween Walk by the Parent Child Center (great job folks) as well as a great Halloween movie watching event at the Veterans Resource center.  I walked in to see some students watching the Rocky Horror Picture show and then found myself in one of those old people “back in my day” conversations where I was explaining the phenomenon of midnight movies and some of the adventures that took place in the 80’s.  The students were (I think!) interested! 🙂

Thank you so much to the Shoreline community for respectful and engaging dialogues post-election.  I really appreciated seeing the 30 or so folks who came out for “Coffee with the President” event and am looking forward to the event sponsored by the DEIA office. Regardless of any changes that may come, we must always keep a focus on our mission and support our faculty, staff and administrators.  We will continue to be strategic and proactive with our colleagues across the state and all over the the world who care about our vision.  We have overcome much at this college (even in the 2+ years I have been here) and will continue to do so- collaboratively and always with student success as our focus.

Here is the statement of values sent out this week on behalf of our community college system:  https://www.sbctc.edu/blogs/news-releases/2024/wa-community-tech-college-values

And hey did you hear: Our very own Sophia Kemp was awarded the WFAA Tim Henning Rookie of the Year Award at the annual state WFAA conference!  This award is given to an up-and-coming member of the financial aid community with fewer than three years of experience.  Sophia received a plaque and recognition at the President’s reception!

Did you sign up for soupsgiving yet? I can’t wait for this event! Info below.

Cheers,

Jack

GIVING TABLE UPDATE: We are in awe of how many of you volunteered and/or attended the Giving Table last Friday. We could not have done this event without all the wonderful volunteers that so cheerfully and willingly show up and help! Special thanks to Amber, Rashawn, Gary, Rob, and Cat for helping to create such a compelling video!

We had over 300 guests registered, which is a bit more than last year! The program for the event included Jessica Strickland, Rashawn Smith, Dr. Kahn. Brian Ramos, Tony Doupé, and the Consul General from the Republic of Korea, Seo Eunji.

Our student speaker, Maggie Watson, told a compelling story of how donor funding has helped her thrive, and then 5 of her classmates gave brief examples of how donor funding has changed their lives. The highlight of the program was a video that highlights the story of one of our automotive students who came here as a refugee from Afghanistan – You can see the video here

As of today, we have raised $96,000 – just $4,000 shy of our goal. If you would like to make a gift in support of our students please click here! Or, if you would like to make a gift through payroll deduction , click here for the form.

All of us in the Foundation office are grateful to everyone who helped and everyone who gave so generously. We are, without a doubt: amazed, inspired, grateful!

Here are some fun photos from the event!!

Business and Administrative Services:

Old Technology Equipment Collection:

TSS would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to drop off their old technology equipment in the collection barrels that have been rolled out across campus.  TSS is beginning the collection process of the barrels to prepare for the eWaste pickup. For anyone who has not yet dropped off their old equipment, please do so immediately. TSS plans to have all collection barrels removed by Friday (11/8).  If you have any questions or concerns on the removal of old technology equipment in your area, please fill out a ticket here.

Microsoft OneDrive is Shoreline CC’s Official Cloud Storage and Sharing Platform:

We have observed an increase in fraudulent emails impersonating Shoreline CC users encouraging individuals to click on Dropbox “shared files” in attempts to compromise network accounts. TSS would like to remind everyone that Dropbox (or other similar file-sharing platforms) is not approved software for the College and, therefore, should not be used when storing, sharing, or creating documents within the College (please note Google Drive can be used for Academic needs by students).

Please be sure to use Microsoft OneDrive for your cloud file storage and sharing needs. OneDrive is part of our ongoing efforts to streamline operations and maximize the value of and protect our existing resources. This powerful cloud storage and sharing platform is available to all Shoreline users.

Benefits of OneDrive:

  • Built-in Security and Compliance: OneDrive aligns with industry standards to ensure our data is protected.
  • Included in your Shoreline.edu Account: No additional purchase necessary and no additional sign-on required.
  • Seamless Integration with Microsoft 365: OneDrive integrates with the Microsoft 365 suite, which we use daily, allowing easy access to files directly from applications like Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Collaboration Tools: OneDrive enables real-time co-authoring and easy sharing of documents.
  • Compliance with WA State Retention and Public Records Laws: Using your Shoreline.edu OneDrive account as the only place to store your work-related data and files complies with retention and public records requirements.

OneDrive can also be installed directly on your Shoreline device for automatic file synchronization between your local hard drive and your OneDrive cloud environment. For anyone interested in learning more about Microsoft OneDrive, you can visit Microsoft’s Training Site here, or view the LinkedIn Learning course here.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Network Rewiring and Hardwiring Connection Project Update:

Below is the updated building list of the rewired and hardwired network connections that have been restored and those in progress with expected completion dates. As mentioned at the beginning of this project, most of the building wiring has not been updated for over a decade or more (emphasis on more). During this project, we have already encountered several major issues in the buildings as we run new cabling and test the integrity of previous network connections.  We continue to utilize our third-party vendor (Milne) and expect to be fully completed in early 2025.

Direct Printing to the Ricoh Devices:

As noted in the previous section, TSS has made some significant progress in the Building Rewiring project.  For all computers that have been reconnected on the wired network, you will now have access to print directly to any Ricoh printer across campus. If you have been reconnected to the wired network, you will need to first install the Ricoh Printer software. To do so, please navigate to the Company Portal and search for “Ricoh Printer”, select the printer icon and click “Install”.  Once the software is installed, you will now be able to print directly to the printers from within your application by selecting “Print” and choosing “Ricoh_Copier_Workstations” from the printers listed. For everyone who has yet to be reconnected to the wired network, printing via email will remain available.  If you have any problems or questions on this process, please submit a support ticket here

Campus eFax System:

TSS is currently in the process of migrating all of the old fax lines to the new eFax system.  At this time we are asking all departments who still use faxing services (sending or receiving) that are not yet on the eFax system to submit a ticket to TSS here.  We are still aware of a few departments that need to be added, however we want to make sure that no one is left out in the process.  We thank you for your attention to this matter.

Campus Updates 10/31/24

Events and News

I can’t believe that it is the last week of October!   Anyone have any fun Halloween plans?  I do not this year, though I do enjoy giving out candy and seeing all the costumes.  I also imagine there will be a horror movie or two in my future, in celebration of the night!

This week has been jammed with meetings and preparation for the board meeting this Wednesday.  We had a foundation board of trustees meeting on Tuesday night and Wednesday night is the regular board meeting. I also had a Pro-D lunch meeting with one of my colleagues and I’m catching up on many projects.  I don’t have anything particularly exciting to report but it has been really nice to reconnect with folks on campus throughout the week.

Happy Halloween as well- I’m currently waiting to see the PCC kiddos- highlight of the month!

Here is the monthly President Update– featuring special guest Appa!  There are a lot of fantastic events coming up in Nov, so make sure you listen all the way through, so you don’t miss any.

I am really looking forward to the Giving Table event tomorrow!  Updates next week! Be well.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 10/17/24

Events and News

Good morning, all!  Well, actually as I write this it’s yesterday afternoon for you.  Hope you had a great day!

This was another productive week full of meetings with partners in China.  We finished our time in Beijing by visiting a high school and another international school.  Both visits were interesting and showed much potential.  I think I mentioned it earlier, but one of our enrollment strategies is to build up more partnerships with institutions (in addition to agents) and China is an excellent place to do so, as interest is high.

As of writing this, we have just arrived in Qingdao. In the hotel we are staying at there happens to be a Chinese dental technology conference occurring, so maybe we can partner with them and our awesome dental hygiene program!

One of the best parts of this trip has been meeting the parents of our students who are attending Shoreline, which has been so moving.  They are so delighted with our program and our college!

Thanks so much to the folks who inquired about the black tofu- glad you are reading these, and I love hearing from you as well.

Cheers,

Jack

This year, we are hoping to raise over $100,000! Attendance at the luncheon is free, but please be aware guests will be asked to make a gift that is personally meaningful during the event. Campus Updates 10/4/24

Events and News

Hey folks- hope your week is going well! It seems that food is the theme this week as we continue to welcome our new students and faculty to campus. I participated in Ask-Me stations (and got pastries and treats from students) and attended a great Associated Student Government (ASG) “Pizza with the President” event, where I really enjoyed connecting and hanging out with students (and eating pizza of course!).

I was also able to get to the WAVES Mid-Autumn Festival put together by Tasha, Scott, and team – what fun! There was great student turn-out, delicious tea and mooncakes, ukulele music (Scott has extra talent there!), friendship bracelet making, and more. Kudos to our AANAPISI Center for an excellent event!

ASG and the Foundation put on a tasty food truck event on Wednesday.  It was great seeing some of you out there and I loved connecting with so many students   Just in case you hear a rumor- I did NOT eat two veggie dogs.  I gave the first one to a student and then got another one!  After I ate it, I did kind of want another one though- so good! Great job to ASG, Student Services and the Foundation!

This week I will be meeting with the presidents for the WACTC retreat where we will be focused on several items including the recent OFM concern. As stated previously, I will share updates as I have them.

On Saturday I will be travelling with Samira and Bo from International Education to China to meet some folks and help solidify some partnerships in that region.  As per our Strategic Plan work, our hope is to continue to add institutional partnerships to the College (in addition to our fantastic agents) to recruit cohorts of students. This provides a lot of advantages to the College and to the cohorts of students as well!  I will try and get updates into the weekly update and certainly will be in touch via e-mail, though I will miss seeing you all on campus and on ZOOM.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 9/27/24

Events and News

Hey hey folks- first week of classes are here, and what a great start!  Convocation was a great event last week.  I really enjoyed reconnecting with faculty and attending Opening Week sessions.  Also, wow- those food trucks were good!  Thank you so much to Veronica Zura and Ben Weng for coordinating the week’s events.  I can’t wait to welcome back more faculty!  I also want to say a huge congratulations to our annual award winners:

  • Classified Star of the Year: Janel Middleton (Enrollment Services)
  • Admin of the Year: Yushin Wung (International Education)
  • Exceptional Faculty Award Winners:
    • Nicole Buyagawan (Ethnic Studies)
    • Wendy Hurley (Mathematics)
    • Zach Mazur (Visual Arts)

Thank you to the faculty and staff that attended our first reworked open house as part of Opening Week! This Guided Pathways event brought new students together with faculty and staff and provided opportunities for students to learn about the pathways possible at the college and… pizza and prizes as well! Ryan Aiello, Mari Cosen, Jill Marquis and team did a great job taking us to the next level on this one!

Did you all see this proclamation by President Biden about API week?  Thank you to our new director Dr. Scott Kurashige for reminding me to bring it to your attention! This is what it said:

“I call on public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that acknowledge the many ways these institutions and their graduates contribute to our country.”

Make sure you also check out the WAVES Fall Welcome/Mid-Autumn Festival Open House on Oct. 2nd next week.

As mentioned in last week’s memo I want to update you on progress with the Office of Financial Management (OFM) issue.  This week:

  1. The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) unanimously approved a resolution to encourage the state to “offset the recovery of the over-funding” (meaning that if we have to return *this* funding that they should substitute the amount from another budget source.
  1. The SBCTC (with President representation) met with OFM to express our concern.  OFM did not respond with any solutions at this time.
  1. The Presidents are meeting next week during our regularly scheduled meeting to strategize work with presidents and Board members across the state – this will need to be a legislative charge, and we will need to work closely with legislators to have an impact.
    • We intend to be very active in that effort.

In the meantime, keep your focus on student learning on helping students meet their goals, because that is why we are here.  I will continue to keep you posted with updates as I reeive more information.

See you next week!

Cheers,

Jack

Communications and Marketing

Please stop by our offices (in the 1000 Building) and grab your 60th anniversary notepad.  We gave them out at Convocation but printed enough for all employees to have one, so if you were out or virtual that day come take one.  A big thank you to Mia for the design!

Printing Services

Printing Services will be closed from Wednesday, Oct. 2nd, through Friday, Oct. 4th, and will reopen on Monday, Oct. 7th.  Please plan accordingly and contact Greg Jensen via email or phone at (206) 546-4674 if you need assistance with your printing needs.

Foundation:

Please note, in an effort to streamline services and minimize sending students to multiple offices, all Emergency Assistance goes through the Benefits Hub (Yay! BH Staff!!) including tuition requests. Please do not send students seeking emergency aid to the Foundation office. The Benefits Hub has limited funds for tuition assistance.  A student must have an emergency, extenuating circumstances if they are requesting assistance for tuition through benefits hub.

The student will need to complete an e-aid application and indicate why they need tuition assistance along with why they need e-aid.  Their application will be reviewed, and funding will be awarded case by case.  Link to e-aid information and application: Emergency Funding | Shoreline Community College

All scholarship funds for 24/25 and Fall 24 have been disbursed. Students seeking scholarship funding should be referred to https://www.shoreline.edu/foundation/scholarships.aspx for application information and timing.

We have created a lot of positive momentum as we shift into Fall term, and we feel deep gratitude for the work of everyone who has contributed to our Guided Pathways efforts over the past few years.

As a reminder, we have chosen five priorities to focus our work this year. Each aligns with specific element of our Equity-Centered Strategic Plan:

  • Make Education Planning easy and transparent for our students. (A8, A9, A10)
  • Ensure that every new student is welcomed onto their Shoreline Pathway through mandatory entry advising. (A8, B3)
  • Give every student tools for exploring career paths. (A9)
  • Center equity in our teaching practices. (C5)
  • Build data-rich tools to support decision-making. (A1, B1)

We’ll be inviting faculty to join in planning and implementing each of these priorities throughout the year. Look for a Director of Guided Pathways (a.k.a. Belle Lamb) coming soon to a Division Meeting near you! In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out to blamb@shoreline.edu – and don’t forget to ask Belle how her horse is doing. Pics provided on request.

Cheers,

Belle and the GP Core Team
