Campus Update 7/14/23

Good afternoon folks. I hope you have been having an enjoyable week. Mine has definitely been a busy one!

First, I wanted to let everyone know that our accreditation visit has been set. We are rescheduled for a Mid-Cycle Review Self-Evaluation Report and visit in Spring 2024. It will be conducted April 18-19, 2024. Mark your calendars- I am excited to show our progress!

The big event that occurred in the last three weeks was the amazing dedication ceremony for our Benefits Hub with United Way of King County, Seattle Mariners, Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Seattle Foundation to launch the newly renovated Benefits Hub which is part of the “Bridge to Finish Program.” This revamped space will (continue to) support students who face financial, food, and clothing insecurity in a whole new way. We have the MLB All-Stars Legacy Program to thank for this generous grant and symbol of integrating our shared missions, values, and purpose. Thank you to Savena Garrett and team for applying for this opportunity, to our student Kiara Romba who gave such a great speech at the event, and to Cat Chiappa, Savena, and Kim Clark for organizing this event. We can’t wait to see all the folks who will be served by the new space.

The second half of this week will mostly be spent in Tacoma, Washington for the annual summer retreat of community & technical college chancellors & presidents. The guest speaker this year is Arthur Levine. I’ve seen Dr Levine speak before and he is a very powerful speaker. His message largely suggests that if colleges (esp. community colleges and private institutions) don’t find ways to demonstrate how they are unique; a concept tied to building one-of-a-kind programs that incorporate timely and adaptive technology, that are more rooted in competency and based less in credit/program, and that are both requested by and co-designed by the community, then those schools will struggle with relevancy in the future.

I’m looking forward to bringing those conversations back to the College. Thought a challenging topic, Dr Levine ended the presentation by stating that he thinks we (the WA State System) are incredible, and that he looks forward to what we will do next.

Well, I know some of you wanted to call me Dr. Kahn while my parents were here, but I was sneakily on campus on a Sunday instead of during the week. I did see a few people though! My parents really enjoyed their time here and I think, like a lot of people, didn’t know about all the great things that WA has to offer in addition to Seattle. They really took to downtown Edmonds actually and my dad said that a restaurant in Bothell made the best Penne Pollo he had eaten in years. And he can be “picky” 😊 So there you have it! Much more of Washington to explore of course.

Best,

Jack

Events and News

Good afternoon folks! I hope everyone had a great July 4th. I don’t have much to report this week, as the end of last week was spent in hiring conversations, and I was out yesterday. I spent Monday through Wednesday showing my folks around the area a bit and visited several neighboring towns. I will have several items to report next week including an update on our naming project, MLB event summary (which is this morning at 10am!), and updates from the WACTC president’s meeting in Tacoma. Be well!

Best,

Jack

Events and News

Good evening all,

I hope all is well. I suppose this is the first official week of summer, but it has not slowed down yet! This week I have spent much of my time with planning items and interviews, and less out in the community.  We have had some great progress on community projects though which you can see in my June video update.

One highlight this week was attending the Healing Centered Leadership / Decision Making for Racial Equity Workshops developed by Dr Hess. They were both inspiring. I learned a lot and have some very specific takeaways to use in the future. It was nice to see some of you all there as well, and I look forward to further discussion about these topics, especially about how to lead from a place of care, and with intent to disrupt systems that prohibit our DEIA goals.

Well as you know, next Tuesday is Independence Day- I hope you all will have some relaxing time with friends and family and can celebrate in ways that rejuvenate you. As it turns out my parents will be visiting over the Holiday, and I will be introducing them to some of the great things WA has to offer. On a related note, many of you upon meeting me have asked what I prefer to be called and I often have this corny response “Jack, but if my parents are visiting you can say Dr Kahn.”

This is your chance people!

Have a great weekend

Best,

Jack

  • Next Friday July 7th at 10am we will be having a grand re-opening and ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the Benefits Hub in the PUB building with members from MLB, the Mariners, and United Way King County.
  • This is a huge honor for Shoreline so if you are on campus that day, we hope you come check it out!

Events and News

Good afternoon all! I hope your week has slowed down a bit while the quarter comes to an end. My highlight for the week was Commencement. This year was a little different for me as I’m not faculty and therefore don’t know as many students as many of you, but I do know some, and of course am vicariously proud viewing our students through the eyes of faculty, staff, and audience members. It was a great day and so wonderful to meet so many students and their parents, and to connect with our faculty. My favorite moment was when this man yelled from the stands “THAT’S MY GRANDSON! THATS MY GRANDSON!” It was a beautiful sentiment.

I want to thank the Commencement Committee (Sundi, Caela, Yushin, Lauren, Akagi, Michaela, Pamela, Randy, Linda, Derek, Greg, Kimberlee, Suzanne, Eberth, Aimee, Tsetsen, Crystal, Taylor, & Lori!) for organizing such a fantastic event, and everyone else who helped volunteer to make it memorable. Congrats to our wonderful students, and to all of you for all the work you did this year- this is why we do it, right?

On Monday I attended the Juneteenth event at City Hall. It’s nice after living here a year to now attend events and see people I know in the community. It was both fun and inspiring to participate in an event filled with community pride. There were a lot of great performances from many of the youth team associated with Black Coffee, including local faves Double-Dutch Divas, who always get the crowd going.

This week I have been busy with interviews and planning items and haven’t had as much time to touch base with community members. I did meet with two folks from a new health care agency that will be coming to our area in the next 1.5 years or so. They are hoping to get connected to local organizations to provide job opportunities for nurses, entry-level mental health workers, and others. It may be a great opportunity for our students! More to come in the future.

On a personal note, I’m thinking about enjoying some summer long weekends to take advantage of the nice weather here and explore some new areas (Eastern Washington for example). If you have suggestions (particularly that are dog friendly), please let me know! I hope you all have some exciting plans for the summer as well. After a tough year this year of losing two of our canine family members, we rescued a new pup. She’s sweet, and also quite a handful! Agnes Elaine pictured below.

Have a great weekend!

Best,

Jack

  • I also wanted to share that as part of the MLB All-Star game next month, Shoreline will have an ad featured in the 2023 Commemorative Program that will go out to thousands of people.  It is a half-page ad based on our current “Grow and Go” campaign.  A huge thanks to Mia Bradshaw for creating it under a tight deadline!
This is an ad for Shoreline. It has a green background and three images of students- one is of nursing students, another is two students chatting outside and a third is manufacturing.

Campus Updates 6/8/23

Good afternoon folks.

As the college gets more comfortable with a participatory recommendation process, I wanted to update you all when items have been approved by the council, ET, and myself.

A recent proposal came to the College Council to recommend that (a) all “land structures” per this map (as prepared by our architectural team, below) would be named in honor of the indigenous tribes in the area and (b) Any new Wayfinding for the College would be tied to the previously begun “Tree Campus USA” project and provide additional funding to ensure its completion. Both items were passed unanimously by College Council, and the Executive Team and I approved the recommendations.

We are working with tribal representatives now and will continue to do so to derive the actual names- more to come—please email if you have suggestions of folks to speak with. At the moment we have been working with colleagues from the Tulalip tribe!

This is a mock-up of an approved design idea for a new way of campus way finding

Last week I spent most of my time at the 75th NAFSA International Education Annual Conference & Expo which was held May 30–June 2 in Washington, DC.  The theme was “Inspiring an Inclusive Future.”  It was my first time at this conference, and it was great.  I met a ton of new colleagues I am hoping we can work with to expand our international work – I also got to spend some quality time with some quality people in our IE program- Samira, Lisa, Yushin and Cynthia. They even bought me gelato for my birthday! It was June 1st 😊

Speaking of the birthday my wife bought me a bunch of plants in a kind of “vertical garden display” for our deck. So, I am supposed to water them after-work, “relax,” and nurture them. I will certainly try to relax- I’ll keep you posted on what grows.

Best,

Jack

You can view current and archived Daily Enrollment Reports here: Daily Enrollment Reports (Public):

Caveats: it is still early for Fall enrollment and due to ransomware, we do not have access to past year same-day comparison (even if we did, fraudulent students in Summer/Fall 2022 would make this a bad comparison).

A link to these reports always can be found at the Shoreline Support Center > Employee > Daily Enrollment Report.

Grants Office

We have been awarded a $130,000 SSEH (Supporting Students Experiencing Homelessness) renewal grant from SBCTC to continue to address students’ basic needs. The grant will connect students with case managers, navigators, and the Benefits Hub to help them access resources such as rent assistance, hygiene supplies, food support, and transportation. Kudos to the collaborative effort of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Office; Student Support & Success; and the Grants Office.
