Campus Updates 11/6/2025

Good day colleagues, I hope all is well.  This has been another week of some pretty straightforward work – budgets and planning for upcoming events (including the Giving Table!).

I was able to take part in the amazing Haunted Library event (I was a bit scared, but I made it through), the Parent Child Center walk with super cute kids, and the wonderful Dia de Los Muertos event.

On Wednesday VP Aiello, AVP Rucks, Dean Ehmke-Reedy and I went to visit President Randhawa and his team at Western Washington University. We just signed a Transfer Articulation Agreement with them and went to brainstorm ways we can encourage the pathway from Shoreline to WWU.  I had never been before – what a beautiful campus!  Looking forward to the opportunities.

I have two events coming up this weekend that I will share next week.  See you at the Giving Table on Friday!

Cheers,

Jack

Business and Administrative Services

Reposted from the 11/6/25 campus-wide email to facilitate multi-channel communication:

Dear Campus Community,

It has been almost a year since our campus bookstore moved fully online. During that year, we have been exploring the viability of re-opening an on-campus store and we wanted to provide you with an update.

After considering recommendations from the Course Materials Accessibility Review Work Group, and meeting with colleagues from other colleges in the area, the Executive Team has decided to keep our bookstore operations entirely online at this time.

Several factors influenced our decision:

  1. Re-opening an on-campus bookstore would involve significant up-front costs to hire staff, identify & renovate a space, and build inventory. Unfortunately, we don’t have sufficient reserves to do this.
  1. The prior campus bookstore had a deficit of approximately $1 million. The Board approved a cleanup of this deficit using Contract Fund Balance reserves, but we cannot afford to create another deficit reserve spending situation.
  1. Given the uncertainty around the new allocation model and other financial pressures, we simply don’t know how the future will impact our reserves and revenues.

Although we will not have an on-campus location, our bookstore’s core services are all available online. You’ll find links on the bookstore’s website where faculty and students can order course materials. Students can also sell back textbooks through the website.

We understand that many people hoped to see the bookstore return to our campus, but, unfortunately, that is not possible in the current fiscal environment.

If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, please feel free to contact me at jmazur@shoreline.edu.

PUB 5000 Self-service Coffee Machines Repair Update

Evergreen Refreshments will be on-campus today and tomorrow to repair and replace the credit card payment modules for the self-service coffee machines in PUB 5000.  Thank you to the PUB 5000 occupants for making us aware of the payment issues.  Please let Gayla Hocker or Joe Mazur know if there are service issues with these or the self-service food vending machines located in the center of the building.

Mail Services

As operations and coverage of the Mail Services Department continues among different employees, we need your help as we adjust our mail and package handling and delivery procedures.

To help complete our mission to timely send and receive interoffice mail, USPS mail, and other carrier packages, please pick up and drop off your items at the Mail Services Office (Room 9100) located at the external loading dock on the ground floor of the PUB 9000 Building. Please do not come to the interior door as the noise levels inside cover up door knocking sounds.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time. If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact Joe Mazur, Kimberlee Clark, or Aimee Henson.

Technology Support Services (TSS)

Student Migration Project

TSS would like to provide an update on the previously announced initiative to migrate student email accounts from the Google platform to Microsoft. This transition is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the student technology experience and improve email support and account management.

Why This Migration Is Necessary:

  • Google’s discontinuation of unlimited free student accounts
  • Reduced storage capacity on Google accounts
  • Improved systems management capabilities through Microsoft
  • Security risks posed by compromised or orphaned @go.shoreline.edu accounts

What’s Changing:

Beginning in January 2026, all active student email accounts will transition from @go.shoreline.edu to @shoreline.edu. To ensure a smooth transition:

  • An alias will be created for each student so emails sent to their old address will automatically forward to the new one.
  • Existing data from student Google accounts will be automatically migrated to their new Microsoft accounts.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) will be enabled to enhance account security and user autonomy.

Preparing for the Transition:

On November 21st, 2025, TSS will activate the SSPR feature for student Microsoft accounts. This will allow students to input their recovery information and prepare for the new services launching in the new year.

A student-facing message will be sent next week with more details and instructions for completing the initial setup.

We appreciate your attention to this important initiative. Additional updates and resources will be shared as the project progresses.

Campus Updates 10/30/2025

Early Happy Halloween folks.  Hope all are doing well.  I know of a couple really cool Halloween events going on that you may want to check out, including The Cursed Library from 3-6 PM on Thursday. And look out for those super cute kiddos from the Parent Ed Center going all across campus on Friday morning!

This week I have been pretty buried in the budget and related tasks to help prepare for the board meeting on Wednesday.  I also had the opportunity to meet with Community Colleges for International Development as I serve on the board.  We are working on the Strategic Plan and updating to align with current world conditions.  I also continue my professional development and met with two presidents in the region this week to get ideas.  I really urge folks to continually reach out to other colleges and learn what they are doing and what activities are leading to better outcomes.

Other than that, I am looking forward to the Dia de los Muertos event and also want to wish the volleyball team good luck tonight!

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 10/23/2025

Hi folks, hope you are having a good week.  Last week, I attended – and really enjoyed – the artist’s reception at the “Through the Lens: Documentary Photography” exhibit. Our students and faculty did a wonderful job discussing their work and their passion for documentary photography! Music, art, students…what could be better?! Oh, and food- there you go.

This week has been filled with a lot of “regular” meetings on campus with Council and Board prep, one-on-ones with folks, and continuing to prepare for challenges.  I met with the Presidents Alliance for immigration and international students this week to try to help increase access for trustees to advocate for these populations.  More information on that as it becomes available.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 10/9/2025

Hi folks, I hope you’re doing well.

I am in the UAE this week with Samira Pardanani and Sarah Stackhouse, promoting our international program. We are hoping to increase enrollment from this region and so far the meetings have been going really well. One thing I learned is that high school costs are as much or more than it would cost students to go to Shoreline College, so we are really emphasizing that as an option here, particularly for the High School Completion program. We actually met two high school age students yesterday, one of whom is going to attend Shoreline!  I’ll provide more information when I get back next week.

I also wanted to let you know that Participatory Governance training is live and available to the college community.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 10/2/2025

Well, it has been a very busy first week of the quarter for all of us. I have spent much of my time this week in meetings with local team members and others to better understand fiscal issues impacting the colleges.  The Federal shutdown is another potentially impactful event, depending on how long it lasts.

Last week I was so impressed with the Donors & Scholars celebration.  Faculty and student scholarship recipients joined donors, community members, and staff from the college.  The event highlighted our wonderful students and the donors who support them.  It was a packed house and generated a lot of positivity and hope – well needed for all of us.  Thank you so much to the Foundation board and donors for all you do for our students.

This week we hosted a Pizza with the President event with the students.  It was great chatting with students and learning more about what they are majoring in and how they are doing as they transition into their first quarter.  The attendance doesn’t represent all students, of course, but the mood was very positive. Students were happy and excited about college and getting to know one another.

I also attended the Nursing accreditation visit.  The nursing faculty and staff did such a wonderful job with the report and in addressing all the elements required to demonstrate our success.  I want to personally thank Mary Burroughs for all her work in bringing this report together.

I participated in an interesting roundtable this morning with presidents and leaders across the country (including our previous president, Lee Lambert!) called ” How to Stay Relevant When Students Can Learn Anything, Anywhere, From Anyone”.  I heard a lot of challenges across the country and some newer ways of responding and rethinking higher education.  I will share what I learn.

I am also looking forward to the film “Madre Agua” today.  Hope to see you there.

Cheers,

Jack

Donors & Scholars Event Recap: A Meaningful Start to the School Year!

Thank you to everyone who helped make our recent Donors & Scholars Celebration such a memorable evening last week. It was inspiring to see proud scholarship recipients alongside their guests (parents, partners, grandparents) and our generous donors, all gathered to celebrate student success. A highlight of the night was keynote speaker and Shoreline College alum (Class of 1979), Senator John Lovick, whose powerful message about doing the right thing and expressing gratitude reminded us of the strength found in community and perseverance. Together, we honored the transformative impact of education and the resilience of our students.

The Giving Table is coming! We need your help! This event raises about $100,000 for student and program support. Now more than ever we need our donors to help fill the gaps! If you want to help us create a great event, get in touch with Taisa (twelhasch@shoreline.edu).
