Campus Updates 7/3/2025

Hello all – hope you are having a good week.  I have been here at Shoreline doing the weekly items.  The week has been packed with budget planning, one-on-ones with colleagues, and catching up on professional development.  No events on or off campus nor partnership work this week.

Hope you have fun plans for the weekend.  I’m looking forward to some sleep and hanging out with the fam.  The dogs need some outings!

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 6/26/2025

Well, it’s good to be back.  I was ill and out almost all of last week and missed a lot of important events, most notably graduation.  It’s the first graduation I have ever missed.  I streamed, though, and cheered everyone on.  I heard nothing but praise for this year’s event – many saying it was even more special than usual.  My thanks to the Commencement Committee and to Dr Ryan Aiello for doing my part (he was fantastic).

Coming back this week to a great opportunity for Dr. Lucas Rucks and I to be on the welcoming “Partner Panel” at the Muckleshoot Effective Teaching Institute with colleagues from Pierce College, University of Washington, Western Washington University, and Auburn District k-12.  We were thrilled to represent Shoreline and to meet so many wonderful leaders. We have an awesome team from SCC attending this week – I can’t wait to hear what ideas they bring back!

A group of people from the Muckleshoot Effective Teaching Institute.

I’m now buried in emails and many other items but glad I’m on the mend.  Hope to see you on campus!

Cheers,

Jack

Evergreen Refreshments (Avanti Markets) has completed the self-service food equipment refresh in PUB Bldg. 9000 with new Pico Vision Coolers. The installation went well and there will be adjustments completed during the summer quarter:

  • Par levels: They will be working to add additional variety to the coolers. During the summer quarter, the coolers will be set to a lower volume, and as we move into fall, they will adjust.
  • Cooler Racks: The coolers were initially set up with shelving racks. They will be installing additional “pushers” and reconfiguring the layout.
  • Cabinetry: Cabinetry is on order, and installation is tentatively scheduled for July 11th

As a reminder, when a user scans their debit or credit card, a pre-authorization is triggered. As a result, a $10.00 pending charge may appear on their bank account. This is temporary and will adjust once the actual product charge is finalized.

For users that had a previous Avanti Card, Evergreen Refreshments is working on a process to refund balances to account holders.

Please see the “How to Use” diagram below for utilizing the new coolers. This is similar technology to the self-service beverage coolers at the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks’ stadium.

Infographic featuring the following instructions for using Pico Vision vending machines: 1.	Scan. Tap/insert your card to unlock (or you can use Apple/Google Pay). 2.	Grab. Open and take your products. Change your mind? Simply put the product back in the same slot. 3.	Go. Close the door to finish. Prices will appear on the touchscreen.

Foundation:

A heartfelt thank you to the Commencement Committee for creating such a meaningful and memorable celebration. Shoreline’s student-first spirit was on full display. This is truly a community that lifts one another up, and the shared joy and support were powerful reminders of what makes SCC so special. We also appreciate the Committee’s efforts to help us raise awareness of our new and improved Alumni Network!

We are wrapping up awarding for the 2025-2026 scholarship cycle. We’re excited to see results from some of the improvements implemented this year. Some quick data:

  • Total amount awarded: $323,400 (up nearly $65,000 from last year)
  • Total number of awards: 165
  • Smallest award amount: $1,000

We are currently preparing for Summer-quarter scholarship disbursement, which will be the first disbursement through our new process with the Financial Aid office. We look forward to sharing more data with campus and will continue to refine our scholarship process over the next year.

As a reminder, we have transitioned to only one scholarship cycle a year. All funds for 2025-2026 have been awarded and we will open the application window for 2026-2027 funds next January.

Campus Updates 6/13/25

Events and News

Greetings all- I hope you are having a good week.  This has been an action-packed week on our end.  We received information from the State Board on 6/6 with data breaking down funding allocations for this year based on the Governor’s budget.  The “good news” is that while we are still receiving cuts compared to last year, the amount we are winding up with looks like the model we presented to the Board at last month’s meeting, so we continue forward with our plans as-is unless something changes in the next couple weeks.  The budget will come to the board for final approval at the end of June.

I was happy to attend several on-campus events this week:

  • We were very lucky to have Dr. Michael Benitez Jr. present to us last week. I found his mix of humor, social justice analysis, and authenticity a real inspiration for these times. I am really hoping we can bring him back and continue to learn from him.
  • I really enjoyed the Music Technology Portfolio event. The students’ work was so professional and well done! I loved chatting with everyone about their projects and plans for the next steps.  Congrats to all the graduates, faculty, and staff!
  • The Pride Flag Raising and Pride Festival events were both very inspirational. It was great seeing students, faculty, and staff just having fun and celebrating Pride!  The live music was really great too!
  • I also want to highlight the Undergraduate Research Symposium on campus.  I was fortunate to see some of this work at the UW symposium, but it was great to see students from the Honors College, and the Biotech and Post-Bacc programs together in one place. Wow! I was blown away.  The students were incredible- some were in high school, and they sounded like they were in PhD programs- I kid you not!  What great work from all the areas!

One on-campus event which was particularly lovely was the retiree celebration.  The question is – how many giant sheet cakes do you need?  The answer-there’s never enough!  There were two huge cakes though and a nice crowd of well-wishers with mixed emotions as our colleagues celebrated their retirement, and we of course are missing them already!

Finally, I met with AVP Pardanani, Bo Fu and representatives from Zhejiang University who were here to visit and see our campus.  Zhejiang University (ZJU), located in Hangzhou, China, is known as one of the country’s most prestigious and comprehensive research universities.  It is ranked #3 in all of China, and #7 in Asia!  We have a new partnership with them and will be seeing some of their students in classes in the near future (likely online for now).

Cheers,

Jack

Committee Updates:

Enrollments:

  • The summer and fall 2025 daily enrollment reports are available to all employees.
  • Archives of past daily enrollment reports are available to all employees.

Technology Support Services (TSS)

Starting this summer, TSS will begin migrating student email accounts from Google to our Microsoft platform to enhance the technological experience for our students and ensure optimal support and management of student accounts. As part of this change, student email addresses will shift from @go.shoreline.edu to @shoreline.edu. Emails sent to the old addresses will be automatically redirected to the new ones.

This transition is necessary for several key reasons, including:

  • Google’s discontinuation of unlimited free accounts for students
  • Reduced storage capacity on Google accounts
  • Enhanced systems management capabilities available through Microsoft

In light of Google’s policy change, it will also be necessary to decommission older Gmail @go.shoreline.edu accounts. TSS has already begun notifying affected users and will work with alumni to help them migrate their data to a personal account of their choice.

Due to the significant amount of data and configuration work involved, the migration process will begin in the Summer 2025 quarter, with the official go-live date projected for Winter 2026. All student emails and data will be preserved during this transition.

To support this transition, TSS will provide comprehensive documentation and training materials for all students, faculty, and staff who have Gmail accounts ending in @go.shoreline.edu. Additional notifications and updates will be shared as we approach the transition period.

Mail Services

As Mail Services Department operations continue among members of the Team, we need your help as we adjust our mail and package handling and delivery procedures.

To help complete our mission to timely send and receive interoffice mail, USPS mail, and other carrier packages, please pick up and drop off your items at the Mail Services Office (Room 9100) located at the external loading dock doors on the ground floor of the PUB Building.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time. If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact me, Kimberlee Clark, Aimee Henson, or Gayla Hocker.

If you are looking for a fun thing to do that gives back to our SCC students, please consider the June 28, 2025, the 14th annual Mark Galloway Shootout at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA. Mark was working on his AA from the GM-ASE Program here at the time of his tragic death. He was a great student and was named Student of the Year at Sno-Isle! His family established a scholarship in his memory. Click the link for more info about the event!

Campus Updates 6/5/2025

 Events and News

My apologies for the lack of update last week—it’s been a bit (more) of a whirlwind the last couple of weeks.

Last month our DEIA office hosted a meeting for the Tlingit & Haida community to come to our campus and discuss how our region can best support them (and each other). Alaska Natives make up a large proportion of our indigenous students in this region of WA state and with a new office just up the street, collaboration becomes even easier. In addition to our folks, we also had the DEI leaders of Everett Community College, Cascadia College, Edmonds College, and Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Can’t wait for next steps!

Another exciting partnership development is with Crescent Hill School in India.  This High school has been around for 50 years and is well known in Maharashtra (and beyond) to have a great reputation.  It usually takes a while for these new partnerships to get to outcomes, but nevertheless we are excited about this step and seeing students attend SCC in the near future.

I was able to get to a few on-campus events as well. I attended the Veterans Center/Student Services Memorial Day flag event commemorating loved ones who perished in the line of duty. It was a wonderful idea and I’m so pleased folks were able to attend, participate, and share stories of their families and loved ones. I also attended author Dr. Mark Padoongpat’s presentation.  He shared highlights from his latest book “Flavors of Empire” and we learned a lot about food, culture, and the culture of food. This was part of the “Lunch and Learn” series brought by the DEI office & WAVES center. And we ate delicious Thai food as well!  There was also a wonderful Gallery/AFA Thesis Exhibition Artist Reception for our graduating associate in fine arts students.  It gave us all the opportunity to view their exhibited portfolio work. Our students are so talented! Thank you so much to Zach Mazur for providing this opportunity for our students and the community.

Last week I was at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators conference for about half the week.   It was great to spend time with Samira Pardanani and the International Education team who also joined. We met some of our previous partners and we made some new ones, with a lot of promise for more partnerships.  I was also interviewed at the conference – enjoy!

Last week we hosted WA state Governor Bob Ferguson on campus with representatives from all 34 Washington state colleges and colleagues from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. Governor Ferguson was warm, kind, welcoming, and very supportive of our concerns as educators. We were also lucky to have our very own Colleen Ferguson from our International program join the event!  Our wonderful international students brought us teas and coffees symbolic of our love ❤️ of students and commitment to global learning and friendship.

And on the announcement side—stay tuned for a soft-launch of Black Coffee Northwest in July!! Hot coffee is coming!!

Cheers,

Jack

Thank You for Supporting SIFF Opening Night!

Thank you to faculty and staff who joined us for our Annual SIFF Opening Night Benefit Party. We’re so grateful for your presence and support! Your involvement helped make the evening not only a celebration of film and creativity, but also a meaningful investment in student success.

Graduation – new this year… Some graduates may be wearing white cords as part of their regalia. Graduates wearing single white cords are recipients of a Shoreline Community College Foundation scholarship. These scholars worked diligently to earn this honor, demonstrating a commitment to their education and future aspirations. These cords serve as a testament to the students who wear them as well as the generosity of our donors, whose contributions empower students to achieve their dreams, reinforcing the transformative power of education and community investment.

We are ramping up the Alumni program at Shoreline, and we need your help! Have some thoughts or ideas? Please contact Taisa at twelhasch@shoreline.edu
