Last Chance to Submit Day of Learning Workshops Ideas- COB Friday 3/22/24

Good Afternoon All, 

A big thanks to those who have already submitted their fabulous ideas for Day of Learning workshops! Please note, campus has until end of day tomorrow (Friday, March 22nd) to let us know if you have a workshop or training topic to offer. 

As a reminder, this year’s Day of Learning events will be focused around a theme of “Employee Engagement” within the context of creating community at work and expanding professional development opportunities in support of increased employee retention. 

Details in place thus far include:  

  • Check out the DAY OF LEARNING website!
    • Information will be added as it’s finalized, so check back often!
  • Remember to SAVE-THE-DATE!
  • Day of Learning 2024 is scheduled for Friday, May 3rd from 8:30am – 4:30pm
  • All administrators, classified, and full-time faculty are required to attend. 
  • Part-time faculty, student employees, and other temporary staff positions are welcome but not required. 
  • Let us know if you have a WORKSHOP or TRAINING topic to offer. 
    • Submit your workshop or training idea to pro-d@shoreline.edu no later than March 22, 2024. 
    • Please include the following info: Title, Duration, Audience, Brief Description, and Equipment/Supply Needs. 
    • Sessions will be offered in 50-minute increments, across three periods through the day.
      • Compensation is available for the development of trainings as needed. 
  • Plan your ATTENDANCE MODALITY. 
    • All events and activities will be offered in both online and in-person formats, with employees deciding the modality that works best for them.
  • Connect with HR for ACCOMMODATION NEEDS. 
    • Reach out to HR at hr@shoreline.edu regarding your specific accommodation needs for attendance no later than April 25, 2024.

Day of Learning is coming in less than 2 weeks! May 5th 2023 

We look forward to seeing you all for this day of professional development surrounding Accreditation, Strategic Planning, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. There will be a variety of all campus and concurrent sessions, and food for people who come to campus to attend.

With the recent letter from our accrediting commission (NWCCU), we also have a very compelling reason to focus our collective learning on strategic planning and the accreditation process. In the spirit of transparency and collaboration, all members of our community are impacted by the actions we will take to address the recommendations the NWCCU put forward to be addressed. As such, working alongside one another to advance the efforts of our College is advantageous for every member of our vibrant community.

Day of Learning- Update

Greeting Shoreline Community,

The Day of Learning (DOL) marks a unique opportunity for the College to connect and learn together. We have numerous reasons to connect and continue building community with the distance we have experienced over the past few years. With the recent letter from our accrediting commission (NWCCU), we also have a very compelling reason to focus our collective learning on strategic planning and the accreditation process. In the spirit of transparency and collaboration, all members of our community are impacted by the actions we will take to address the recommendations the NWCCU put forward to be addressed. As such, working alongside one another to advance the efforts of our College is advantageous for every member of our vibrant community.

Through many meetings and at the recommendation of Melanie Dixon, the Vice President of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Accessibility (DEIA), and with the support of Executive Team, we are updating the theme of Day of Learning to be more inclusive of our strategic plan initiatives as they align with accreditation training and implementation. This shift in theme allows us to refocus portions of the day on much-needed topics around accreditation requirements, accreditation training, and implementation, and strategic enrollment management activities. It is a priority that the campus community is knowledgeable on these topics and can support the work to be done. A college-wide learning event is the perfect setting to address these time-sensitive topics.

This does not mean shifting the focus away from DEIA, but rather centering it at the heart of our planning processes and, thus, making DEIA the highest priority of the institution. Our strategic planning and accreditation improvements will enable us to be more accountable to our DEIA goals. Our community will have the rare opportunity to anchor all college efforts in DEIA to close obligation gaps for our more-than-worthy students and to be responsive to the accreditation recommendations. Addressing inequities at the system level will allow Shoreline to step back into the leadership role of DEIA for our system to enhance the lives of all students.

We will be working with the Day of Learning Committee to revisit the call for proposals to make a slight pivot, while honoring the intent of the submissions.

Our College history reflects our commitment to DEIA and lays a foundation for us to build upon. There is much still left to accomplish in this space to achieve our commitment to equity and inclusion. Together we can identify barriers to inclusion and dismantle them together. 

This year’s Day of learning theme is Moving Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility to Action.   

The tracts for the day are Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. Definitions below pulled from the DEIA website: 

Diversity: Typically refers to the wide range of identities within the broad categories of race, ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, veteran status, physical appearance, etc. 

Equity: The act of developing, strengthening, and supporting outcome fairness in resource systems and procedures with a focus on eliminating barriers that have impacted historically marginalized and/or underserved groups. 

Inclusion: The ongoing and adaptable action of providing equitable access, opportunities, and resources for systemically non-dominant groups or individuals in a way that acknowledges and shares power.    

Accessibility: Creating and advancing barrier-free design, standards, systems, processes, and environments to provide all individuals, regardless of ability, background, identity or situation, an effective opportunity to take part in, use and enjoy the benefits of: employment, programs, services, activities, communication, facilities, electronic/information technology, and business opportunities.
