Are you interested in becoming a Search Advocate?

Search Advocate positions on campus support search committee activities with the goal of ensuring equity, validity, and diversity in Shoreline Community College recruitments. Search Advocates serve as non-voting resource positions to a recruitment process, working directly with the screening committee members as they review applicant data and determine candidates for advancement in the process.

The Search Advocate Foundations workshop series establishes a theoretical foundation of current research about implicit bias and diversity, information about the changing legal landscape in hiring, and an overview of inclusive employment principles. Using this foundation, you will begin to construct your own framework of practice, delve into specific issues that may arise at each stage of the search process, and explore various ways to head off or respond to those issues.  By the end of the final session, you will have a toolkit of practical strategies for each stage of the search process, and approaches to help you perform the advocate role effectively as part of a search committee.

Eligibility:

  • Open to permanent employees at the College, who can:
    • Attend all 4 training sessions in the workshop series.

photo of new band director

Dr. Christopher Vongvithayamathakul (Mathakul) joined Shoreline Community College in the 2022-23 academic year as a full-time music faculty member and director of the Shoreline Concert Band

Previously, Dr. Mathakul directed the Symphonic Band and served as Music Ensembles Program Coordinator at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Dr. Mathakul completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in instrumental conducting at the University of Washington in 2022, studying with Professor Timothy Salzman.

As the concert band’s graduate assistant at Washington, Dr. Mathakul served as the director of the Concert Band and assistant conductor for the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band.

In the Spring of 2021, Dr. Mathakul and fellow graduate conducting student Daniel Fischer presented a clinic entitled “Creative Learning Experiences for Music Ensembles Using Digital Audio Tools” at multiple state music education conferences.

This presentation was inspired by the virtual composition project entitled “Putting the E in Ensemble” piloted by the University of Washington Wind Ensemble in collaboration with composer Alex Shapiro in the Spring of 2020.

Dr. Mathakul earned a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from the University of New Mexico where he studied conducting with Professor Eric Rombach-Kendall and clarinet with Professor Keith Lemmons.

During his time at New Mexico, Dr. Mathakul served as a graduate assistant for the UNM bands, where his responsibilities included assisting and conducting the concert bands, marching band, and running the “Soundpack” basketball pep band. Dr. Mathakul also served as the music director for the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque, a community orchestra.

Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Mathakul earned a bachelor’s degree in music education at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and spent seven years as a high school and middle school band director in schools on the island of O’ahu, Hawai’i. During this time, Dr. Mathakul was an active member of the O’ahu Band Directors Association and chair of its Beginning Honor Band.

The concert band has openings for new players. Get out your instruments and sign up. The link to register is Shoreline Community Band (campusce.net) to register through Continuing Education, not for credit.

Waves of Gratitude

Waves of Gratitude for Brandon Fryman of eLearning for Inclusive Excellence. Brandon did such a great job in the faculty institute. Showing us what to look out for in our classrooms to build equity and inclusion, it’s just little shifts that I would not see. TILTing (Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TiLT), is such a great idea and I can see why he is so passionate about it. And building accessibility in the classroom even before we have a student that needs accommodations is a great way to already build that with that in mind. It is important to realize that not everyone speaks out about getting help or telling folks that they need an accommodation. Build it first. He has such great ideas and has a good eye for catching things I do not. I appreciate all the work you do on our campus. Thank you for being so JEDI-A centered. And everywhere I turn, he is there helping on campus. Anonymous.

As a reminder, for those wishing to acknowledge the work of fellow shoreline staff members or a group at Shoreline, you need only submit a Waves of Gratitude form for individuals or a Shoreline Shoutout for groups.  Thank you from the Employee Recognition Committee – Rob, Wanda, and Megan.
