Fire Drill Debrief

Dear Campus Community,

Let me start by thanking everyone for their participation in the campus fire evacuation drill yesterday. This drill is the kickoff for increased and continued emergency preparedness that will be a large focus of the Department of Safety & Security for the 23-24 school year. We have already identified a few areas that we are going to focus on for improvement of drills and for overall preparedness:

  • Updated signage around campus with evacuation locations and AEDs
  • There were several buildings (800, 1000, 1100, 1200, 5000) where the alarm sounded momentarily before shutting off. Rest assured; this was user error (on my part) as I inadvertently activated the alarm clearing sequence on the panel as I was attempting to activate the fire alarms across campus. Should your building alarms sound for an actual emergency, they will sound continuously until cleared by responding personnel.
  • There were several buildings (1800, 1900, 2300, 4000, 2900, 3000) where the alarm never sounded or had to be triggered via a pull station. This was a known possible outcome due to work being done on the system as a part of the new construction projects and effected only communication between the panels. Should there be an emergency in any of those buildings, the alarms will sound and stay active until cleared by responding personnel.

I would like to give you all the opportunity to provide feedback from your experience yesterday (both the good and the bad). Please feel free to fill out this survey

READ ME! All-Campus Fire Evacuation Drill, Thursday, October 5th

Dear Campus Community,

On Thursday, October 5th, the College will be having an all-campus fire evacuation drill. During the drill, all students, staff, faculty, and visitors are required to evacuate from all campus buildings and assemble in the designated evacuation areas. The alarms will activate to begin the drill. Campus Security personnel and Building Marshals will assist at evacuation points and provide directional information. Participation is mandatory if you are on campus.

  • The evacuation locations are designated by a white sign with red lettering entitled “Emergency Evacuation Point” (reference attached photo) along the perimeter of campus.
  • Individuals exiting campus should proceed to the evacuation site closest to their location (map attached, sites marked by blue star).
  • Everyone must immediately evacuate, in a calm and controlled manner.
  • Do not attempt to re-enter buildings until authorized to do so Campus Security personnel or a Building Marshal.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Safety & Security Director Greg Cranson at gcranson@shoreline.edu

Safety & Security Tips for Life on Campus, Fall Quarter ‘23

Welcome back to campus! As we work our way through the first week of the quarter, I wanted to take this opportunity to provide some tips from the Department of Safety & Security.

Parking

Permits are required to park on campus for all days each quarter, Monday-Friday from 6:00am-4:00pm, excluding weekends and holidays. Citations with fines are issued for ADA violations, PCC parking violations, Visitor Lot violations, and other illegal/hazardous (fire lane, blocking roadway, not parked in a parking stall, etc.).

Students can purchase parking permits in Student Finance (aka Cashiers). Part-Time employment requests can be sent in by department office. Full-Time employee permit requests must be verified by Dean, Director, etc. Daily permits are also available for purchase at pay stations located at the East Gate, West Gate, in front of Bldg. 7000, in the parking lot west of Bldg. 1600, and on the walkway between Bldg. 2900 and 3000.

Campus Security

We have a uniformed Campus Security Officer on campus and on-duty 24/7/365. Our personnel are trained and equipped to respond to a vast variety of calls that include, but are not limited to, basic first aid, medical emergencies, security emergencies, and calls for assistance.

To reach our team during business hours, call 206-546-4633, or visit the Safety & Security Office in the Foss Building, Room 5102.

After hours or if the office does not answer, the on-duty Campus Security Officer can be reached at 206-235-5860

Tips

Here are a few tips that can help you in having a wonderful experience here at Shoreline:

  • STOP! If you haven’t already, save the after-hours Campus Security number in your phone now! 206-235-5860.
  • Park in high traffic and well-lit areas.
  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle and remove items from view.
    • Even if a bag only has dirty gym clothes in it, a prowler may break in hoping it contains valuables.
  • If you observe a suspicious person or vehicle on campus, call security.
  • Always keep your phone and photo ID on your person in the event that you need to contact assistance.
  • If you witness or observe concerning behavior or posts on social media, report it to Campus Security by calling the office or after-hours number.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Do not report injuries, criminal activity, or request immediate assistance via email, as email is only monitored sporadically during office hours.

Fall Parking Update

Dear Campus Community,

As we approach Fall Quarter, I wanted to take this opportunity to offer a few reminders:

  1. NO PERMITS REQUIRED BETWEEN QUARTERS. While Visitor Parking, Parent Child Center Parking, ADA Parking, illegal, and hazardous illegal parking is ALWAYS enforced, permits to park on campus are not required between quarters.
  2. PARKING PERMITS ARE REQUIRED BEGINNING SEPT 27TH.
  3. STAFF CAN GET THEIR PARKING PERMITS FROM SAFETY & SECURITY (RM 5102) AND STUDENTS CAN PURCHASE THEIR PERMITS FROM CASHIERING (2ND FLOOR OF BLDG. 5000, FOSS). Part-Staff must have their division or department lead email authorization for a permit to safetyandsecurity@shoreline.edu PRIOR to the staff member coming to retrieve it. Full-Time staff must have approval from Dean or Director.
  4. CITATIONS HAVE A 5-DAY APPEAL WINDOW. If you find a parking citation on your window and you would like to appeal it, you have five days to turn in a completed appeal form, copy of the citation, and copy of your photo ID. Appeal outcomes can range result in citation dismissal, a warning in lieu of the monetary fine, a reduced monetary fine amount, or the full monetary fine may still be required to be paid.
  5. ELECTRIC VEHICLE PARKING. The time of charging allowed on campus is 3 hours of electric vehicle charging on campus per day. Going over the limit of 3 hours per day may result in a parking citation; multiple citations for the same violation may result in being referred to student conduct or human resources.

For questions, please come to the Safety & Security Office (5102), call us at: (206) 546-4633 or email: safetyandsecurity@shoreline.edu

 Respectfully,

Your Department of Safety & Security
