Ebbtide wins awards!

Hooray! The school’s student-run newspaper took top honors in this year’s Washington Community College Journalism Association contest.

Judges awarded the Ebbtide first prize for General Excellence based on two issues from the past year: one produced under the leadership of current Editor in Chief Daria Kroupoderova, the other under former Editor in Chief Jake Cochrane.

While the Ebbtide has won General Excellence awards in the past, it has never before taken first place. Second- and third-place awards this year went to papers at Pierce College and Green River Community College.

Six Ebbtide staff members also won individual awards for content published between spring 2013 and winter 2014.

  • Randy Hatfield won three awards, including first place in Personality Profiles for his article on a local camera repairman, first place in Feature Photos for his shot of rock band Funk n Groove performing in the PUB, and second place in Editorial Cartoons for his drawing of a smirk-faced cigarette leaning against a “No Smoking” sign. For the three wins, Hatfield received an additional prize: the second-place Sweeps award, which comes with a trophy.
  • Cherese Smith, meanwhile, won third place in News Writing for her article on Adderall use on campus.
  • Daria Kroupoderova won first place in Headlines for the title “Ventriloquism: It’s not just for dummies.”
  • Jesse Archie took third place in Sports Feature Reporting for his profile of the women’s basketball coach, Darnellia Russell.
  • Karla Holman took second place in Page Design for a colorful, two-page layout on the Ebbtide staff’s favorite spots to relax.
  • Megan Horton took second place in Sports Photo for her shot of a player on Seattle’s pro frisbee team diving for a disc.

The Ebbtide meets 4-6 p.m. every Monday and is open to all students. For info on paid spots opening in the fall, email Adviser Patti Jones at pattijones@shoreline.edu.
