Incoming President Cheryl Roberts was on the Shoreline Community College campus Friday, June 20, 2014. The visit was the first of what is likely to be several on-campus opportunities before Roberts takes office on Aug. 18.
On Friday, Roberts met with Interim President Daryl Campbell, Vice President for Human Relations and Legal Affairs Stephen Smith, incoming Interim Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Bob Francis and Special Assistant to the President for Communications, Marketing and Government Relations Jim Hills.
Roberts and Campbell then went to the International Education offices for introductions to Executive Director Diana Sampson and members of her staff including Director Admission and Immigration Samira Pardanani, Associate Director of International Outreach Marci Fradkin and others.
“I’m really looking forward to becoming part of the Shoreline community,” Roberts said.
Congratulations to Judy Penn and Jerry Baker for their Quality Matters certified courses!
This June, two more courses became Quality Matters certified: “BIOL 150 Epidemics and Culture” designed by Judy Penn, and “BUS 143 – Materials Management” designed by Jerry Baker. For those not familiarized with the program, Quality Matters (QM) consists of a nationally recognized peer review process designed to certify the quality of online courses and online components.
Judy Penn has been teaching at Shoreline for the past 24 years. She is an active member of our academic community and, as a Biology and Microbiology professor, she has been the recipient of both the “Faculty Excellence Award” and “Leadership and Innovation in eLearning Award.” Judy facilitates the Shoreline eLearning Community, serves on the SBCTC Faculty Learning Community Task Force, and is certified as a Quality Matters Peer Reviewer. Prior to contributing to Shoreline, Judy was associate faculty at North Seattle Community College. At the beginning of her career, she was a Research Associate in Pathology and Endocrinology at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, where she spent six years conducting research. Judy has extensively published and presented in her field, including co-authoring the books Get Ready for Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology for English Language Learners.
Jerry Baker teaches purchasing, materials management, contract administration, logistics and transportation, among other business administration courses. He joined Shoreline in the fall of 1998, after having taught purchasing, marketing, and production management at Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania State University, Edmonds Community College, and Arizona State University. He is also the author of three reference books and numerous articles about purchasing, inventory control and supply chain management. In addition to having been the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) for eighteen years, retiring in 1998. Note that BUS 143 is indeed Jerry’s third QM certified course. Both “BUS 141 – Purchasing and Supply Management Fundamental” and “BUS 142 – Sourcing and Supplier Relations Fundamentals” have also met the quality standards established by the QM program.
Congratulations to both Judy Penn and Jerry Baker for their exceptional contribution to online education at Shoreline!
