Students in the Toyota Technician Training and Education Network (T-TEN) program at Shoreline Community College visited the Seattle International Auto Show on October 8, 2015.  Students were able to check out the latest technologies in the automotive industry.

“This is a great opportunity for the T-TEN Students to go and see what other manufacturers are putting out for customers to buy and drive,” said Kevin Roner, T-TEN Coordinator and Instructor at Shoreline.

The Professional Automotive Training Center – Dealer Training Academy at Shoreline Community College is the premier automotive technician program in the U.S. The Center and its industry partners originated this innovative model that integrates education with hands-on workplace experience.

Every student in one of the four factory-sponsored programs is sponsored by a local automobile dealership. Students are in a cycle of 11 weeks (one academic quarter) at the Center, then 11 weeks in their dealership throughout the two-year program. Students can graduate with a two-year Applied Associate in Arts and Sciences degree as well as numerous manufacturer-specific training certificates.

Seattle International Auto ShowA shorter, non-manufacturer specific program called the General Service Technician (GST) program has students attend two quarters at the Center followed by one quarter in a workplace setting. GST students receive a certificate of proficiency

The Seattle International Auto Show ran through Oct. 11, 2015, with most major automotive manufacturers are represented at the CenturyLink Field Event Center in Seattle. Shoreline’s partner, Washington State Auto Dealers Association (WSADA) oversees ownership of the Seattle International Auto Show. Motor Trend Auto Shows, the nation’s largest auto show production company, produced the show on behalf of WSADA.

“With a seasoned team of automotive and event production experts from Motor Trends, we know the Seattle International Auto Show provides auto enthusiasts and those in-the-market to purchase with an innovative and re-imagined experience,” said Vicki Giles Fabré, WSADA Executive Vice President.

Disability Employment Awareness Month Tip for Oct. 14: Facts About Downs Syndrome

down syndromeIn honor of Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Office of Special Services (OSS) is working to raise awareness of disabilities by offering daily facts and tips about people with disabilities and living with disability. Please take a minute to read and broaden your understanding.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!!!

In every cell in the human body there is a nucleus, where genetic material is stored in genes. Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes. Typically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.

This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. A few of the common physical traits of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm – although each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual and may possess these characteristics to different degrees, or not at all.

How Common is Down Syndrome?

One in every 691 babies in the the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common genetic condition. Approximately 400,000 Americans have Down syndrome and about 6,000 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year.

Veterans Programs Presentation: How Transitioning Service Members and Veterans View the Classroom…and You , Wed., Oct. 21

veterans presentation
Please join the Veterans Programs office for the first in a series of training opportunities next Wed., Oct. 21 from 2-3 p.m. in room 1402 entitled: How Transitioning Service Members and Veterans View the Classroom…and You. Please attend and lets learn how we can best serve Veterans on campus together!!

Shoreline Community College, Navy Veterans Mike Schindler – CEO of Operation Military Family and Steve Vincent, Captain United States Navy (retired), will share “insider thoughts” on how transitioning service member and their families often look to college as their “next mission” in order to better themselves for life in the civilian world. But the classroom environment can often be more “foreign” than field missions.

You will walk away from this training with a better understanding of what Veterans experience through the transition process and what perceptions they often have to overcome as well as determine how the skills and experiences of a military/veteran family can add value to your classroom – you also may just learn what expectations a Veteran has of you…the leader of the classroom.

Plan to attend. The event is free and refreshments will be available (those are free too). Please register in advance here.

4. PEAK HOURS: Dinner-time from 6-8:30pm is the busiest time at Patxi’s. We encourage reservations for large parties. We also do Pre orders: this is when the guest can call ahead and order a deep if they are going to be in a hurry or have small children or just don’t want to have to wait the 40 minutes for a deep pizza. After dining, order extra and take home half-baked pizza for another meal. Bottles of wine can also be purchased for take-out.

By signing up for Patxi’s VIP rewards program you will get a FREE appetizer on your event date for joining!
