Changes to the library: children and YA collections re-located

The library’s collection of children and young adult books, curated over many years and through the contributions of many staff members, is being relocated to the Parent-Child Center for their direct use. A lesser number of titles will be shelved back into our circulating collection. As the resources no longer directly support a curricular program here at the college, we made the change to enable greater ability to seat patrons and other visitors to the building, using adult-sized furniture and other accessories. Coming soon!

This is one of many transitions we’re making on this floor of the 4000 Building to better accommodate the multiple needs of Tutoring, the Math Learning Center, The Writing & Learning Studio, and the Library along with all their well-wishers. We heard from many constituent groups that seating space was a priority, we agreed, and we pushed ahead. This is a model for future innovations within the facility, so please continue to visit the building and vocalize your concerns along with your compliments. Lots to do and we’re not done yet.

On behalf of a hard-working library staff, thanks.

Emergency training now online

Get Ready – Take Action, Shoreline Community College’s All-Hazards Emergency Response Training is now available online.

Starting in June 2014, Safety and Security Director Robin Blacksmith has been offering the 90-minute required training sessions in a traditional classroom setting. Starting this past spring, Blacksmith worked with the college eLearning department to create an online class using the Canvas learning management system, the same technology used by college faculty.

all-hazards-trainingThose unfamiliar with Canvas and how to find a class in the system can go to www.shoreline.edu/elearning/canvas.aspx for instructions on how to login.

“I’m very excited about the online training,” Blacksmith said. “Our eLearning department was really great to work with and this will make the class available for all employees to take when it is convenient for them.”

This training has been broken up into learning modules, to be completed one at a time, in order. Completing all the training should take a total of approximately 90 minutes. The training can be started and stopped to be completed later. After completing a module, you may log off and return at a later time to continue on to the next module and your work will be saved. Associate faculty members will be compensated for 90 minutes at the contractual rate for non-instructional work, $39 per hour.

After the required modules are finished, an optional survey is available to provide feedback and help improve the learning experience.

“A number of people who have already taken the class have asked if they can take it again as a refresher,” Blacksmith said. “The answer is ‘yes,’ (with supervisory approval) and the online option may help address that request.”

The goal is to have all employees complete the required training, including staff and full- and part-time faculty. So far, about 50 percent of employees have completed the training and Blacksmith is hoping the online option will help push that number to 100.
