This message is a notification to the campus of a significant program change that received temporary approval in Summer of 2019.  

The following two Shoreline offerings are on temporary hiatus (our accrediting body refers to this as “suspension”) for a minimum of one and maximum of two years, starting in Winter 2020: 

·         Business Technology, AAAS 

·         Business Technology, Certificate  

The rationale for putting these offerings on hold is not tied to the current budget review process, but is based on advisory committee feedback indicating the current curriculum is not adequately preparing students for jobs that are available in the region. A program planning exercise has already been conducted with the advisory committee, and there are plans in the works to develop new program options as part of the Business Technology program within the next two years.   Note that the Microsoft Software Applications Certificate of Completion (EPC 551A) is still active, as is the Business Technology program as a whole. In addition, the suspension of these program options has had no effect on any other programs within the Business Department (Accounting, Business Administration, Purchasing & Supply Chain Management).

Many of us are aware of an impending US Supreme Court decision on the future of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). I know many students and employees may be feeling a tremendous amount of uncertainty and anxiety about what this decision may mean for undocumented and immigrant students. 

I want to reiterate Shoreline Community College’s steadfast support for all students. We are committed to upholding and maintaining a welcoming and supportive learning environment for everyone, regardless of documentation status. 

While the current Supreme Court case is being heard, College employees are staying informed of any potential changes. Recently, staff members from Students, Equity & Success participated in a “DACA and Your Future” webinar to help prepare for possible outcomes. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide both students and employees with support resources as well as notification should any new developments arise. 

Here are some additional ways we can all support undocumented students: 

• Guide students and colleagues to the Campus Immigration Resources and HB 1079 web pages 
• Do not ask students about their immigration status 
• Make your support visible 
• Read up on immigration resources such as United We Dream’s toolkit for educators and Immigrants Rising’s Top 10 Ways to Support Immigrant Students 
• Employees can participate in the November 20 Community Read launch event, which will focus on the book, Papers: Stories by Undocumented Youth 

We stand by DACA recipients and remain committed to keeping our doors wide open to them, because we know that our quality of life in Washington improves when everyone has access to education.

Dear Colleague,

Work on a portion of the College’s electrical system will take place the early morning of Saturday, November 16, 2019. This will result in a power loss to buildings 2000, 2100, 2200, and 2300 from 5–7 a.m.
