Preparing for U.S. Election Week

Dear Colleague,

Having our voices heard in an election is a central tenet of our democracy, and we know we are facing a national election of consequence next week. As we enter the final days of this historic voting season, there is a possibility that some election results may not be settled on November 3rd or in the immediate days thereafter. If this is the case, many people’s anxiety and stress levels may remain heightened and demonstrations in our communities may occur.

While many of these events are taking place on a national level, we know they may impact us at the College as well. Our campus community reflects the rich diversity of this nation and the world. Our many viewpoints mean that employees and students will be experiencing a range of emotions during this time and may need different kinds of support. Here are some resources to help our campus prepare for the days and weeks ahead.

Voting Resources

  • You can find general voter information at www.sos.wa.gov/elections
  • If you are eligible to vote but have not yet registered, you can register in-person up until 8:00 p.m. on November 3 and cast your ballot

 Emotional Support Resources

  • Employees seeking emotional or mental support may access resources through the state Employee Assistance Program (877-313-4455)
  • Students seeking emotional or mental support may access services at the Counseling Center (206-546-4594)

Virtual Events for Students

  • November 4 & 5 – Election Hangout Sessions (sponsored by Student Life, Gender Equity Center, Multicultural Center)
  • November 4 – Crafternoon (sponsored by Gender Equity Center)
  • November 12 – Self-Care Workshop (hosted by the Counseling Center)

Information for Faculty

  • A message was shared with all faculty today via the Office of Student Learning that includes tips and resources for fostering and managing election-related classroom conversations
  • The Library has created a 2020 Election Learning Guide

Contingency Planning for any Civil Disturbances

  • Out of an abundance of caution, the Executive Team is developing a contingency plan for the College in the event there are any demonstrations in the surrounding area that would make it unsafe for employees or students to come to campus
  • Should there be any need for a campus closure or suspended operations, the College would send an update to students and employees via text, email, and phone through Rave Alert, our emergency messaging system
  • Please take a moment to check and update your Rave contact preferences at www.shoreline.edu/connect so that you always receive the latest College alerts

Although our students and employees represent a spectrum of political and ideological beliefs, we continue to be part of a shared, resilient community at Shoreline. As we go through the days and weeks ahead, there are resources and people here to support you and I encourage you to find ways to maintain your physical and mental well-being.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President
Office of the President
