Spots Available for Honors Program 2015-16

There are spots still available in the Honors program for 2015-16. As we wrap up summer quarter, please recommend the Honors program to any students you think might benefit.
Students have the opportunity to work on a year-long project with a faculty mentor, and we hope to have more students participate in the UW undergraduate research symposium this year.
You can find more information about the Honors program at Shoreline here. The application is attached here.
New Convocation, schedule, for Opening Week 2015
Planning for Opening Week 2015 is underway and get ready for a new day.
The Opening Week Planning Committee has been meeting and working since June, starting with a clean slate for imagining the five days leading up to the opening of fall term and the 2015-16 academic year.
“Opening Week is a critically important time to come together as a college,” President Cheryl Roberts said. “This is an opportunity for us to learn how we can focus and align our efforts on students and what they care about. Whenever we focus on student success, great things happen for our students, the communities we serve and the college.”
To take full advantage, one significant change is being made to our opening week schedule for Sept. 16-22:
Fall Convocation will be one full day of discussion and learning for faculty and staff and it will take place on the first day of Opening Week, scheduled for Sept. 16.
“In looking at the structure and sequence of Opening Week, and with input from the committee, the Executive Leadership Team, and Dean Team members, the thought is to hold Convocation on the first day, Wednesday, Sept. 16, to set the stage for the entire week with energy and excitement about the major directions for the college,” Roberts said.
In addition, Convocation will be a day-long event for faculty and staff.
The day will be modeled like a conference with an opening plenary session, lunch, an afternoon session and a closing plenary session followed by a reception/social time. Sessions throughout Opening Week will relate to what was shared during Convocation on Sept. 16.
“We know that the week before classes is also an important time for our students,” Roberts said. “Those key services will continue to operate with hourly employees so we can serve students, yet have time for our college community to learn together.”
The Opening Week Committee is continuing to meet and solidify the schedule. More details regarding the full schedule will be available in early September and posted at www.shoreline.edu/openingweek.
Still Time to Donate to the Clothing Drive for South Africa Study Abroad – Ends Fri., August 14

Just a reminder that there’s still time left to donate to the South Africa Study Abroad Clothing Drive, which ends this week on Fri., August 14. Clothing (warm and durable preferred) and shoes contributions can be made up to Fri., August 14, for young people served by the South African care center found here and here.
The South Africa Study Abroad (SASA) summer 2015 program, now consisting of a total of 15 Shoreline students and former students, has established a connection with the children being served by the care center since first visiting them in 2003. We are collecting warm clothing items and shoes, which we will carry in our luggage so as to give to these deserving children (some of whom are teenagers) when we visit them between August 25-27. As they are currently at the end of winter, Langbos Care Center has made specific requests for warm clothing (jump or jogging suits in particular) for the youngsters of all ages, and anything stylish for the teenagers.
Anyone interested in donating items (new or like-new) can drop them off in the barrels identified in common areas around campus with the label: Clothing Drive SASA 2015: The Children of Langbos South Africa. Donations are possible from July 22 to August 14.
Clothing donations can also be picked up from your office and other locations by contacting Dr. Ernest Johnson directly at: ejohnson@shoreline.edu with the subject heading: The Children of Langbos Donations.
