Hundreds of elementary and middle school students came to Shoreline Community College on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13-14, for a First Lego League state qualifier competition.

Part of WashingtonFirst, First Lego League is a robotics competition developed for school-age students. Using Lego-brand products, teams formed at local schools or other groups build and program a small robot to accomplish challenges. The students also investigate a research topic then prepare presentations. Qualifying tournaments lead to regional and state-level competitions.

“We’re very excited to work host the event, the students, teachers, parents and all their supporters,” said Susan Hoyne, Dean of Science at Shoreline.

Washington FIRST Robotics was started to partner with, promote, and enhance the mission of the national FIRST organization in the state of Washington.  The group’s mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders. Events like First Lego League help engage young people and build confidence, according to the WashingtonFirst.

The Shoreline event was one of three across the state. The top teams from the Dec. 13-14 event will move on to semifinals and then state finals. Shoreline is scheduled to host a semifinals event in mid-January.
