Mimi Harvey Receives Global Engagement Mini-Grant

coil.jpgDr. Mimi Harvey, Communication Studies faculty member, recently traveled to Seoul, South Korea to meet with Dr. Lee Hunyul, Korea University faculty, through the help of an International Education Global Engagement Mini-grant. The purpose of this meeting was to begin development of a joint Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project. COIL is a model for teaching and learning that promotes the development of intercultural competence (the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people from other cultures) through a shared online multicultural learning environment.

During the recent visit, Dr. Lee and Dr. Harvey began the process of developing a joint project that will meet the COIL objectives: exposure to different cultures leading to increased global awareness; a better understanding of the one’s identity; and more experience and greater comfort levels with the tools and processes involved in collaborating with remote partners. They hope to pilot the project in Spring Quarter, 2018. Although Dr. Harvey is presently on sabbatical, you may contact her at mharvey@shoreline.edu if you are interested in learning more about COIL projects.

Message from President Roberts: WSU Data Security Breach Notice

Dear Colleague,

You may have recently heard about a data security breach at Washington State University’s Social & Economic Sciences Research Center. Some employees and students on our campus have received letters from WSU explaining that their personal information may have been part of the affected data. (See Seattle Times’ 6/22/17 article).

I want to acknowledge that our College administration is aware of this situation and we will continue to monitor it as more information becomes available. At this point, if you received a letter from WSU regarding this issue, it is to alert you to the potential that your information was included but WSU is stressing that there is no evidence any personal information has been accessed or misused.

Washington State University is providing one year of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for individuals whose personal information was affected. The university has set up an assistance line, 866-523-9195, to answer questions about the data breach (available Mon-Fri, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.). It has also posted information on its website: https://wsu.edu/security-incident/.

Thank you,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

President
