Join us in the PUB 9208 on Wed., March 1 from 1-2 p.m. for this Got Your 6 training opportunity.

Many veterans have experienced sexual trauma while in service to their country. This workshop will address topics including a familiarization with military culture, how military sexual trauma occurs in a military culture context, how military sexual trauma is defined, identifying military sexual trauma, and how to address exposed difficulties as a result of military sexual trauma. Presented by Kimberly Hardy, Project Director for the Veterans Training & Support Center. This training counts toward the GOT YOUR 6 designation.

Support Assessment at Shoreline!
Two important surveys launch Mon., Feb. 27. The first is the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement. This survey, a companion to the Community College Survey of Student Engagement, is administered through the University of Texas at Austin and allows for comparison between students’ and faculty members’ perspectives on the Shoreline learning experience. Faculty should be receiving an email from the University of Texas at Austin – please keep an eye out for that survey.
The second survey is brief and is part of an important learning outcomes assessment project. Below is an invitation from the faculty and staff involved:
Dear Colleagues,
How does a Shoreline education improve a student’s ability to write effectively?
Here is one of our general education outcomes for students:
Formulate and express information, ideas, and opinions in mechanically sound written forms that have a clear purpose, focus, thesis, and organization; that are appropriate for their audience in content and style; and that support, clarify, and expand complex ideas with relevant details, examples, and arguments. [Communication sub-outcome 4]
Over the past 18 months, a small group of faculty has partnered with researchers from Shoreline’s Office of Institutional Assessment and Data Management to tackle the challenge of finding out whether our students meet our general education outcomes.
After a promising pilot study assessing our Global Awareness outcome, a working group is launching a full study of the impact of Shoreline education on students’ ability to communicate in written form, as described above.
Are writing skills gained cumulatively?
An analysis of our MCO system revealed that 84% of all Shoreline courses listed at least one assessment of the ability to write effectively, as described in our general education outcome. To assess this outcome adequately, we need to have a robust, cross-campus assessment effort.
Please contribute three minutes to this important study.
The first phase of our study will be to understand more about where and how Shoreline students have the opportunity to gain written communication skills. The survey, which you can access here, will ask you about three courses you have taught recently. It is a brief, confidential survey, and will only take about three minutes to complete.
Thank you for your time!

This performance marks the west coast premiere of Amy Beach’s Cabildo! Amy Beach, arguably America’s most famous and celebrated female composer, composed her only opera in 1932. Never published, the work was not performed during the composer’s lifetime, and has only had a handful of performances since 1946. Shoreline’s production will be the west coast premiere of this miniature masterpiece. Set in late nineteenth century New Orleans, Cabildo tells the mysterious story of the notorious pirate, Pierre Lafitte (sung by Trevor Eaden) and his lover, Lady Valerie (sung by Alexandra Picard). The story is set in the governor’s palace and jail of the Cabildo, and features a cast of singers, chorus, and narrator accompanied by a piano trio.
Restrooms and Transgender Students
Dear Colleague,
Yesterday the Trump administration withdrew federal guidelines that recommend transgender students use the bathrooms of their choice in schools. I would like you to know this change does not have an effect here at Shoreline Community College.
The guidelines, recommended by the Obama administration, are not law and the current administration has now determined they will defer these guidelines to the states. The State of Washington already prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and expression, and mandates that public agencies allow individuals to use restrooms and other facilities based on their gender identity or expression.
Title IX civil rights law also prohibits discrimination based on “sex,” including at colleges.
I would also like to reiterate the College offers four all-gender restrooms on campus so that all students and employees have safe access to a variety of restroom choices. (You may read more about the all-gender restroom initiative here.)
Shoreline remains committed to serving all students and ensuring their right to learn freely and without discrimination.
Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President
