Last call for student and faculty speakers! Deadline is Mon., April 11

Commencement 2016 preparations are in progress by the Commencement Committee.

The Commencement Committee requests nominations for student and faculty speakers. Speakers will be selected based on their accomplishments and potential to deliver meaningful, thought-provoking messages to graduates and guests. Student nominees must have their graduation applications submitted by April 15th.

Please submit completed forms by Monday, April 11, 2016.  Forms can be turned in to Nancy Marshall (Room 5202A, FOSS Building), emailed to nmarshall@shoreline.edu, or put in intercampus mail to 5202A. Thank you!

New website launch delayed

Editors of the website were informed last week that April 11 is no longer the proposed launch date for a new website. Instead, the launch has been pushed back to sometime later this month.

There are a few more glitches to work out with both our design vendor and our web content management system vendor contracted to implement the new design. Additionally, since the new site requires reworking of existing pages, some department content editors can use the extra time to fix the formatting of their pages.

What’s the hold up?

  • both vendors are not sure what’s causing the second large homepage image to disappear on smaller screens
  • the search box is not functioning reliably on mobile devices
  • a styling fix is required for homepage factoids that have a single digit number
  • navigation menus are unmanageable in the current implementation
  • hyperlinks are not working inside tabs

What are the benefits to waiting?

Besides everything working as it should, we’ll have:
Editors, members of the web workgroup, and two hourly assistants (current and former Visual Communications Technology program students) are working hard to launch as soon as possible. Please stay tuned!

Molly Magai makes paintings of landscapes dominated by cities, roads, industry, and the living things that inhabit them. These structures, created for human convenience, are very much in conflict with nature. They are also an awe-inspiring human accomplishment, the work of generations of builders and engineers. Most of us ignore these landscapes as we pass by them. Magai’s job as a genre painter is to make you see them, in their destructiveness and their beauty.

Magai make paintings based on snapshots she takes from a moving vehicle. Handicapped by the car’s speed, the camera creates inadvertent effects – unexpected colors, halos, and blurs. She is interested in the sensation of speed, and the way the image is filtered first through the camera, the painter, and the painting.

Help the Mark F. and Tiffany T. McVeety Student Fund 1 reach its goal

John Backes, former Shoreline Community College Faculty and VP of Academic and Student Affairs and former Board Member of Shoreline Community College Foundation, has offered a match of your donations of up to $500 to help push this fund to $25,000 this month.

Mark McVeety was a faculty member and liaison to the City of Shoreline and former President of the Shoreline Community College Foundation. Mark passed away just this past December from a life threatening illness. The Mark F. and Tiffany T. McVeety Student Fund 1 was established by Mark and Tiffany before Mark passed for the purpose of assisting students who experience a serious illness and have to drop out of school losing cost of tuition, books and parking. This fund will make it possible for the student(s) to return to Shoreline Community College when they are able without the worry of tuition, books and parking expenses.

Summer hours schedule starts June 20th

Shoreline Community College will adjust to summer public operating hours starting Monday, June 20th through Friday, September 2nd.

Starting on June 20th, the official college hours of business will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, the hours will be 8 a.m. to Noon. The campus will close at Noon on Fridays for public and student services. On September 5th following the Labor Day holiday, the campus will return to the regular schedule, which is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

“This adjustment will allow the college to continue to serve our students and communities while also allowing our terrific employees an opportunity to balance their work and their lives outside of the College,” President Cheryl Roberts said.

To maintain a 40-hour work week, the schedule for most employees will be “four nine-hour days and a one four-hour day,” said Stephen Smith, Vice President for Human Resources and Legal Affairs. “The summer schedule will allow most employees to work nine hours each day, Monday through Thursday, four hours on Friday and then be off for the weekend,” he said. He also noted that for the week of July 4th, a Monday holiday this year, full-time Classified employees will need to work 32 hours Tuesday through Friday at Noon of that week. Employees should confirm an appropriate schedule for their position with their supervisor before May 20, 2016.

Smith noted that some departments, such as the Parent-Child Center, Safety and Security, and Facilities will continue with their regular academic year schedules based on business needs. For all other areas of the college prior to June 20th, employees and supervisors will work together to finalize summer schedules that ensure department needs are fully met with adequate staff coverage during the official business hours of the College and that alternative schedules don’t create additional costs.

“We want employees to enjoy the opportunity for our schedule flexibility when practical,” Smith said. “We also share responsibilities to fulfill our shared mission by ensuring college services are available, accessible, and meeting the needs of our current and future students.”
