Campus Updates 10/06/22

EVENTS AND NEWS

Good afternoon all, I hope all is well.  It has been a busy week!  Good news from my office, first-level interviews for the VP of DEI have concluded, and we will be bringing candidates to campus in the next couple of weeks.  Thank you so much to the team that worked to get us this far.  Stay tuned for information about forums and more. This is pretty exciting folks!

I had the opportunity to meet with Debbie Tarry who is the outgoing City Manager for Shoreline.   We had met previously but because I was eager to learn more about her ideas on how to get SCC more integrated into City Planning, she was willing to meet again.  We brainstormed some ideas which I will bring you all soon for feedback.

I also had the opportunity to meet with our new Associated Student Government president Chloe Mok.  Chloe is eager to get started and work with her colleagues to set goals and see great work happen this year.  Unsurprisingly, when asked if she knew of any “hot topics” for students right now, her answer was coffee and hot food (bad pun I know).  As we work through those details, I will share more.

Great things are happening on campus!  I have been meeting with faculty and staff over the last couple of weeks to learn more about their history at the college and ideas on how to assist us in moving forward. There also was a GREAT event at the Multicultural Center. This was a welcome-back activity with a beautiful cake and empanadas from various regions in Latin America.  Jamie Ardeña did such a great job with his team of students- hope you were able to catch the palpable excitement there this week.

And finally, I got to meet Dolphie!  It was of course a VIP event to meet the new Shoreline mascot.  The lines were huge, and the paparazzi were nuts. All the stars were there trying to get their photos with Dolphie. In all seriousness, it was a super fun event coordinated by the Athletic department. Besides Dolphie there was lemonade, popcorn, and athletic gear. It was brimming with stars, our students, staff, and faculty!

On a personal note, last weekend I went to a Water/Sustainability Conservation Expo in Snohomish. It was put on by Master Gardeners in the area and had several booths and workshops on topics like soil fertilization, indigenous plant support, problematic pest, etc. My wife and I are particularly interested in learning about rain barrel projects that preserve rainwater for later use in gardening. I *just* put together two garden beds, which I am excited to set up, and am hoping to learn about this method of water conservation. If there are any experts out there- let me know! I’m ready to learn.

Have a great week!

Questions?

Getting vaccinated and boosted is still the best way to fight COVID-19. The Washington State Department of Health vaccine locator at Vaccinate WA: Find COVID-19 Vaccine Providers Near You can help you find the most convenient option for you. The CDC recommends getting a bivalent Pfizer (ages 12+) or Moderna vaccine (ages 18+) if it’s been two months or more since your last booster or vaccination.

Shoreline Community College MISSION – Our Purpose

We serve the educational, workforce, and cultural needs of our diverse students and communities.

Waves of Gratitude

Waves of Gratitude for Brandon Fryman of eLearning for Inclusive Excellence. Brandon did such a great job in the faculty institute. Showing us what to look out for in our classrooms to build equity and inclusion, it’s just little shifts that I would not see. TILTing (Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TiLT), is such a great idea and I can see why he is so passionate about it. And building accessibility in the classroom even before we have a student that needs accommodations is a great way to already build that with that in mind. It is important to realize that not everyone speaks out about getting help or telling folks that they need an accommodation. Build it first. He has such great ideas and has a good eye for catching things I do not. I appreciate all the work you do on our campus. Thank you for being so JEDI-A centered. And everywhere I turn, he is there helping on campus. Anonymous.

As a reminder, for those wishing to acknowledge the work of fellow shoreline staff members or a group at Shoreline, you need only submit a Waves of Gratitude form for individuals or a Shoreline Shoutout for groups.  Thank you from the Employee Recognition Committee – Rob, Wanda, and Megan.

Shoreline Shoutouts

Shout Out to Live Zoom Room Support Folks. Live Zoom Room folks were amazing at supporting students, staff, and faculty through the remote launch of ctcLink this past Spring. They “turned it up to 11” when we began verifying students this summer as the fraudulent student investigations began. They have verified over 530 students since the end of August! All while also answering all kinds of other questions about how to register for classes in ctcLink, how to login to ctcLink & Canvas, and many more! Always with welcoming attitudes and letting every student know we have their back. THANK YOU ALL!! Anonymous
