Women’s Volleyball Wins #1 in North Region

In its last regular season match, Shoreline Dolphins Volleyball defeats cross town rival Edmonds Tritons in 3 straight sets to capture NWAC North Region crown at Tritons Gym, Lynnwood, Washington on November 10, 2015.

Our Women’s Volleyball team defeated Edmonds Community College Tuesday night to officially win the title of #1 in the North Region. They are also ranked #6 in the entire Northwest Athletic conference (NWAC) in the NWAC Coaches Poll.

Now that they’ve gained the title for the North Region, the Phins will head to the NWAC Championships to try and secure the title of champs of the NWAC. The tournament will be held Nov. 19-22 – stayed tuned for details. In the meantime, give a big shout out of congrats to our Phins! #GoPhins #PhinPride #FirstPlacePhins

GAC Presents: The Canada-U.S. Relationship, James Hill, Consul General, Canada, Thurs., Nov. 12

Join us Thurs., Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) for a talk by James Hill, Consul General, Canada. This event is free and open to the public.

The United States and Canada share two borders and their bilateral relationship is one of the closest and most extensive in the world. It is reflected in the high volume of bilateral trade–more than $2 billion a day in goods and service; the fact that the two countries have one of the world’s largest investment relationships; and in people-to-people contact–about 300,000 people cross between the countries every day. In fields ranging from security and law enforcement to environmental protection to free trade, the two countries work closely together on multiple levels, from federal to local.

Canada and the U.S. cooperate on continental defense, transboundary environmental and water issues, and on international high seas governance initiatives. They are both founding members of the Arctic Council. They are both members of numerous multilateral political, military, and economic fora, including the United Nations, NATO, WTO, NAFTA, G7, G20, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Organization of American States, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

But do they see eye to eye on every international issue? There is a tendency of Americans to take Canada for granted – “they are just like us, aren’t they?” While the two nations do share many basic values and cooperate in many spheres, Canada does have interests and perspectives that at times are at odds with the United States.

Meetings to review Vision, Mission statements on Thurs., Nov. 12 & Tues., Nov. 17

This message from President Cheryl Roberts was sent on Nov. 2, 2015 by email to all Shoreline Community College employees.

Dear Colleagues,

The new strategic plan for Shoreline Community College is nearing its final draft for presentation to our Board of Trustees in early 2016. In forming the plan, we have witnessed unprecedented participation from hundreds of members of our campus community. There have been thoughtful and rewarding conversations with both employees and students as well as  with members of our broader local and business communities. Thank you for all the work you have done thus far to shape our future!

The Strategic Plan Task Force and the Executive Leadership Team will work through the remainder of the year to refine the goals and objectives of the plan. At the same time, we want to have a discussion about our current vision and mission statements. This will allow us to inform the Board of Trustees, which sets the vision and mission of the College, that our campus community has spent time reviewing the statements for any proposed modifications. The purpose is not to propose a new vision or mission, but to ask whether anything in the current vision and mission is out of alignment with the strategic goals as they have been revised following the group discussions during Opening Week.

Laura Rehrmann, Special Assistant to the President, will facilitate two meetings to discuss the vision and mission statements. In reviewing the vision and mission, you will see the draft strategic goals as they now stand. I hope that you will be able to attend one of these sessions: 

  • Thursday, November 12, 3:00–4:30 p.m., Room 1402
  • Tuesday, November 17, 8:30–10:00 a.m., Room 9201

There will also be an opportunity to contribute online for those who cannot attend in person.

In early winter quarter, we will share the new strategic plan with the campus community one last time, prior to presentation to the Board of Trustees. Then the work begins to join together in implementing our preferred future over the next five years.

Thank you again for your valuable participation as our strategic plan is developed. We are nearing the finish line!

About the Washington ACT (Association of College Trustees) 2016 Transforming Lives Awards
The Washington ACT Transforming Lives Awards recognize current or former students whose lives have been transformed by attending a Washington State Community or Technical College.  One (1) current or former student from each of the 34 Community and Technical Colleges will be nominated by the College’s Board of Trustees. A subcommittee of the Shoreline Community College’s (SCC’s) Board of Trustees will review all nominations received from the campus community, determine the College’s nominee for the 2016 Washington ACT Transforming Lives Awards and submit the nominee’s name to the ACT Awards Committee.

The ACT Awards Committee will select a total of five individuals (awardees) from the nominations submitted by the CTCs and each of the five awardees, will receive a $500.00 (Five-Hundred dollar) monetary award. In addition, the ACT will honor all 34 current or former CTC nominees at a Transforming Lives Awards Dinner, scheduled for January 24, 2016.

CRITERIA:
Nominations must come from the current or former student’s Board of Trustees, based on the following criteria:

The nominee may be either a current or former Washington Community or Technical College student who has completed or made significant progress toward completing a degree or certificate that has helped him or her prepare for, or achieve success in future or current endeavors.

The nominee must share a compelling story** in written format (maximum 500 words) about overcoming barriers to achieve higher education goals and how the education and support received at his/her Community or Technical College was life transforming (e.g. new employment, self-sufficiency, etc.). ** Please note: All 34 stories will be published in the Transforming Lives Booklet. The booklet is widely distributed to Legislators, CTC Stakeholders, the Public and is posted to the ACT’s website.
