Save the Date: Day of Learning is April 30!

Dear Colleague,

Please mark your calendars for our all-campus Day of Learning event this spring! This will be an exciting opportunity for us to take a day to come together virtually, learn together, and build on our great legacy of creating an inclusive campus culture of support and care. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Learning Team (DEI-LT) is working hard to develop the day’s content and coordinate the logistics with key associate deans to make this a successful event for all of us.

2021 Day of Learning

This year’s event will take place on Friday, April 30, 2021, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

  • The Day of Learning Intranet page will be updated shortly and will be a centralized place where you can find event information.
  • A SharePoint site is being built now, where all event links, schedules, and learning materials will be stored (this link will be added to the Intranet page in the near future).
  • Additional pre-event learning opportunities will be shared with you via email in advance of the event.
  • All staff and full-time faculty are expected to participate in this daylong event; part-time faculty are welcome to attend but are not required to participate.
  • Classes will be canceled, and campus services will be closed on this day to facilitate maximum employee participation.

This Year’s Theme is “How Do We Foster Inclusive Change at Shoreline?”

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion. We know these words are part of Shoreline’s values, but a lack of consensus on their meaning has made it difficult to embody them and facilitate sustainable changes on our campus. Key questions also face us: How can we navigate difficult conversations about campus culture? How do our unique perspectives shape our understanding of institutional inequities? The goal for this year’s Day of Learning is to learn skills and gain knowledge that will create a more inclusive campus culture for supporting each other and serving our students. While engaging in sessions that center DEI, we will put our shared definitions into individual and collective action, and continue to work on our ongoing commitment to inclusive excellence and institutional change.

Please watch for additional information in the coming and weeks, as we build out more pre-event learning opportunities for you. Looking forward to engaging in this important work together.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Call for Proposals for 2021 Day of Learning

Shoreline Faculty and Staff!

The DEI Learning Team invites you all to submit proposals for leading a session at this year’s Day of Learning on April 30th, 2021! Sessions will be 50 minutes in length and facilitated online. They will need to follow accessibility standards and focus on this year’s theme: How Do We Foster Inclusive Change at Shoreline?

Facilitators do not need to be an expert on their proposed session topic; we are simply asking for proposals from employees who are passionate about issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Learning Team can provide some support to employees who want help in designing their session. Faculty and classified staff facilitators will be paid an hourly rate for leading their sessions on Day of Learning. Further details about dates and submission are below:

Sample Session Proposal:

  • Proposer: Brigid Nulty
  • Description: Exploring and developing a shared definition of “Inclusive Pedagogy.” I hope to lead a online activity during which participants compare and integrate definitions from multiple sources. Together we will develop a shared understanding of what Inclusive Pedagogy means, and what it can look like in action.
  • Area(s) of Focus: Varied, but especially racial equity, ableism, classism (e.g., “first-gen” vs “continuing gen”)
  • Format: Workshop. Pre-reading required
  • Collaborators: Possibly someone from FLC
  • Additional information: Would need advance sign-up/registration, so that I can assign pre-reading

Message from President Roberts: You’re invited to Fall Convocation & Opening Week 2020!

Dear Colleague,

As we all return from a hopefully restful Labor Day, it is time for us to turn our attention to two annual traditions our campus community celebrates with great anticipation and excitement: Fall Convocation (Reimagine Possible) and Opening Week.

This year, how we experience our campus community may feel different as we continue with primarily remote operations. Although most of us have been away from the physical campus for six months, we are grateful for a small group of colleagues who come to campus regularly to support our operations and our students. Students continue to share stories about the excellent learning and quality service they have received from Shoreline during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each one of us is continuing to carry the Shoreline spirit into the interactions we have with colleagues, students, and the public, regardless of where our work is located. And, for that, I am so grateful.

This year’s Opening Week will take place September 17-23 in a way that reflects our new work style and will help us prepare for the year ahead:

  • Thursday, September 17 – The week will begin with academic division meetings via Zoom for faculty and staff to reconnect, set the tone, and plan for the upcoming academic year.
  • Friday, September 18 – We will come together virtually for Fall Convocation from 8-10 a.m. Based on input from faculty, classified staff, admin/exempt staff, and union leadership, Fall Convocation will be shortened to just two hours but will include many of the familiar pieces we’ve come to cherish: time to gather and connect, employee recognition awards, introductions to our newest employees, and my remarks that will provide context for our academic year together. New this year will be learning opportunities offered during the afternoon.
  • Monday, September 21 & Tuesday, September 22 – The week will conclude with professional learning opportunities and time-honored gatherings that anchor us and help us prepare for the first day of the quarter. The week will be filled with the following themes: Online Learning and Support; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and Campus Essentials.

Opening Week will engage, inspire, and prepare us to serve our students in new ways. I want to thank those who have come alongside this work to create great opportunities for us to gather, learn, and be with one another, even though we will be physically apart.

The Opening Week schedule is now available on SharePoint so you can plan for how you will take part and engage. I look forward to seeing you throughout the week, as we find new ways to keep the Shoreline experience special!

With great appreciation,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Lynda.com is now Linkedin Learning

LinkedIn is a networking site designed specifically for the business community. However, with the merger of Lynda.com and its extensive video training content, their professional training division called “Linkedin Learning” continues to help grow and develop current technology, business, and creative skills that everyone can benefit from in their careers.

Shoreline Community College has the same educational access to these excellent training tools as we had with Lynda.com and wants to help you build your professional skills. Students, faculty & staff do not have to have a “Linkedin” account nor do they have to bind to a “personal Linkedin account” to use the site.

If prompted, just follow the specific sign-in instructions to continue, “Without connecting” to my Linkedin account.

Please access your account via https://www.linkedin.com/learning

As before, click the “Sign in with your organization account” then enter your Student, Faculty or Staff email credentials and password.

If you have further questions, please see the “Linkedin Learning Login Instructions” on the left side of the Technology Support Services page on the SCC website.

Happy Learning!
