Online and Hybrid Quality Course Design Institute

ELearning Services is offering our Online and Hybrid Quality Course Design Institute again this Winter quarter. If you are interested in joining us, please read on for more information.

Stipends
Participants will earn a $100 stipend for participating in the institute and then an additional $400 stipend for earning a Shoreline Quality Course Design Certification.

Course Overview
You will choose one of your courses to work on throughout the Institute – it can be a conversion of a course from F2F to Hybrid or to Online or even a brand new course. We will cover hybrid and online course design topics such as alignment of content with course outcomes, video assignments, high engagement teaching strategies, collaborative technologies, and practices to make your course more accessible.

Institute Schedule
This Institute will run for 6 weeks during Winter quarter. We will offer two identical sessions each of the 6 weeks, so you can choose which Thursday or Friday session you will attend each week based on your preference.

These sessions will be held on Thursdays 1:30pm – 3:30pm and Fridays 10:00am – 12:00pm.

    • Week 0: January 16th and 17th – Canvas Basics (Optional week for those wanting to learn more about Canvas)
    • Week 1: January 23rd and 24th – Course Overview and Introduction
    • Week 2: January 30th and 31st – Organizational Design Strategies
    • Week 3: February 6th and 7th – Backwards Design for Hybrid and Online Courses
    • Week 4: February 13th and 14th – Accessibility and Usability for all students
    • Week 5: February 20th and 21th – Student Engagement and Collaborative Technologies

Welcoming Lucy Casale, Acting Dean for Access and Advising

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to take the time to update you on some exciting news in our division. Lucy Casale, Acting Dean for Access and Advising, started at Shoreline on October 17th. Lucy supervises staff in Advising, Enrollment Services and Financial Aid, Honors, CEO and Learning Center North.

This staffing change included the appointment of a Faculty Program Coordinator to assist in Advising. Audrey Reuter, a current member of the Shoreline Advising Faculty, has accepted the leadership role of Faculty Program Coordinator for the 2019-20 school year.

Lucy’s Bio:

Lucy Casale served as the Sr. Associate Director of Washington MESA.  As part of a statewide organization that serves K-12 and community college students, her role was dedicated to increasing access and success for students who are historically underrepresented, serving 3,000 pre-college and 1,000 community college students.  She has extensive supervision and budget management experience, managing $3 million dollars of grant funding for the SBCTC.  Previously, as the Director of Community College Programs with the University of California’s Community College Chancellor’s office, she was responsible for growing the community college program from 10 campuses to 35 campuses.

Lucy shared, “My passion has always been to support underrepresented students.  I was the project director for the Bilingual Teacher Prep Project at Modesto Jr. College, serving primarily Spanish, Portuguese and Southeast Asian language teacher pre-professionals.  For the past 25+ years, I have worked for MESA, providing academic and other support services.”  Lucy worked as an Advisor for 6 years and holds a Masters degree in Ethnic Studies from SFSU and a BA in Sociology from UCSB with an emphasis in Black Studies.
