Response to a Bias Incident Report

Dear Colleague,

On Friday, October 18, a student discovered a racially offensive sticker on the Career Education Options (CEO) job bulletin board in the Workforce office that referred to diversity and white genocide. The sticker was reported to CEO staff, immediately taken down, and given to Safety & Security for investigative purposes.

As our Community Standard Statement declares, we do not tolerate hateful, violent, or discriminatory actions that target any person or group based on their beliefs, customs, identity, of affiliations. While our College respects and protects freedom of speech, we also affirm the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and are steadfastly committed to providing a welcoming and secure environment for all members of our community.

We ask for your assistance in helping us to identify if any other materials of this nature are found anywhere on campus. Shoreline maintains an active Bias Response Team dedicated to reviewing and responding to incidents like this. Please report any and all bias incidents using our bias incident reporting form.

Offensive materials such as this sticker can bring up many feelings for people. If you are in need of support, please know we offer resources to students through the Counseling Center (FOSS Building 5000, Room 5251) and to employees through the Employee Assistance Program.

Shoreline is unwavering in its resolve to create an inclusive, diverse and welcoming community, and incidents such as this will not deter us from this important work. We can and will work together to find the best in each other, to bridge our differences, and to treat each other with the respect and kindness that all people deserve.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

President

Fall 2019 issue of the Community Report available

The Community Report is a twice-yearly College publication mailed to neighbors and businesses in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Our fall issue just mailed out and we wanted to be sure employees had a chance to view it too. Hard copies are also available in the PUB, FOSS, and the Administration building. The stories featured in this publication are also on the Shoreline News Blog that was revamped this past summer.

If you think you have a newsworthy story to share with the world, Communications & Marketing wants to hear from you!

Contact Rachel Evans (revans@shoreline.edu or x. 4501) to share your news or story idea for consideration in an upcoming article. We’d love to hear about student successes, innovative class projects, staff or faculty achievements, newsworthy initiatives, community partnerships, and more.

Terry Taylor serves as President of FACTC (Faculty Association of Community and Technical Colleges of WA)

Our own Terry Taylor, Assistant Dean of The Honors College and Professor of History, Political Science, and International Studies, was elected president of the Faculty Association of Community and Technical Colleges of WA (FACTC) at the Spring FACTC meeting at Spokane Community College. The FACTC holds annual elections, but most presidents serve 3-4 years on average. Congratulations, Terry!

FACTC works closely with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges on policy and advocacy issues and provides a forum for faculty to discuss statewide policy and share instructional information and concerns across campuses. Terry replaces Gerry Smith from Clark College as President. Each of the 34 colleges has a representative to FACTC and they meet quarterly.

Terry shared, “I would say one of the more rewarding experiences of FACTC is meeting colleagues from across the state from the wide variety of big and small, urban and rural, colleges. We have the opportunity to learn what is happening on other campuses and share innovations and new teaching practices. We are a very collegial group in all the best senses of the word.”
