President Roberts joins national call for DACA legislation

President Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D., has joined more than 200 college and university leaders across the country to launch the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. The Alliance is urging Congress to pass bipartisan legislation before January 19, 2018 to protect the young immigrants knows as Dreamers from deportation.

Alliance representatives issued a letter to Congressional leaders on January 11, in which they stated, “As leaders of institutions that play a vital role in unleashing human potential, strengthening and enriching local communities, and securing our nation’s well-being and prosperity, we take seriously our responsibility to address public policy issues that are inconsistent with our purposes and values as educational institutions, our commitment to our students, and our nation’s heritage as a land of opportunity for those who come to this country in search of a better life for themselves and their children.”

“Shoreline Community College offers steadfast support for all of our students, including undocumented and immigrant students. We stand by DACA recipients and remain committed to keeping our doors wide open to them, because we know that our quality of life in Washington improves when everyone has access to education,” said President Roberts.

Core themes feedback needed

FEEDBACK NEEDED:  Core Themes and Accreditation

At our fall quarter Campus Update, Bayta Maring synthesized our work over three years focusing on our strategic plan, values, vision, and mission, and introduced the next phase: core themes and assessment. (You can watch the video if you missed the presentation). Attendees were invited to provide feedback about the core themes and indicators, and Bayta has incorporated those comments into a revised version.

Please take an opportunity to review and provide comments about Shoreline’s new core themes and indicators via online survey:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ShorelineCoreThemes.

“Core themes” is a term defined by our accreditors, the Northwest Commission on College and Universities (NWCCU), and represent a tool to help assess whether we are meeting our mission. Defining our measures of success is fundamental to keeping true to what we do, and ongoing tracking of those measures is a standard by which our accreditors evaluate our vitality as a college. The proposed shift in our core themes represents a change towards more clarity and consistency in assessment, and will help us address one of four recommendations we received from NWCCU in 2012.

In fall of 2018, we will welcome an NWCCU evaluator for an ad-hoc visit to follow up on four remaining recommendations from 2012 that focus on (1) alignment of core themes, strategic planning, and budgeting;  (2) assessment of all programs and services; (3) updating policies and procedures; and (4) core theme indicators. Bayta Maring serves as our Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO), and will be working closely with many of you to document progress since our mid-cycle self-study in October 2015, and to ensure we continue our progress through this academic year. The ad-hoc visit provides an excellent opportunity for us to take stock and celebrate the immense amount of work we have accomplished in the past three years, and look ahead to what Shoreline will be in 2020 when we conduct our full self-study.

If you are interested in being part of developing Shoreline’s core theme indicators, work groups are forming now!  Contact Bayta Maring (bmaring@shoreline.edu) for more information.

A Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday message from President Roberts

As we honor the enduring legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this coming Monday, January 15th, I hope that each of us takes an opportunity to remember his incredible life and how his leadership inspires our College’s values of respect, inclusion, and engagement. May Dr. King’s teachings about justice, courage, and equality continue to encourage us not just on this one holiday, but throughout the year, and remind us to dream big and be fearless in the actions we take to make our college, our community, and the world a better place.

Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Leadership change – resource allocation & reporting

For the past several months, the Executive Team has been assessing how to allocate the functions previously performed by the position of Executive Director, Budget and Capital. This position supervised the Facilities Department and the Safety & Security Department, as well as budget activities of the College, and reported to Stuart Trippel, Senior Executive Director & CFO.

Having considered our needs for careful resource allocation and comprehensive financial reporting, in the context presented by a vacant position, the College has decided to enhance its finance and budget functions and change the executive director position to Director, Resource Allocation & Reporting. This position will continue to report to Stuart Trippel and will supervise the budget office. The Facilities Department and the Safety & Security Department will also continue to report to Mr. Trippel. No additional funding will be required, because the previous executive director position will be eliminated.

Since the vast majority of the College’s budget, as well as the most complex component, is salary and benefits, the College is reassigning Satoko Prigmore as payroll manager to the new position of Director, Resource Allocation and Reporting, effective January 16, 2018. In addition to supervising the budget office, Ms. Prigmore will also take on projects related financial analysis and reporting to the campus community and outside entities. While her replacement as payroll manager is identified, Ms. Prigmore will continue to support the College’s payroll function.

Ms. Prigmore holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from City University and an associate’s degree in accounting from Seattle Central College. Prior to becoming payroll manager, she worked for the College as a Fiscal Analyst 3 and in other accounting positions.

Mr. Trippel said, “I’m delighted that Satoko is willing to take on this role. The knowledge and experience that she has gained from serving as our payroll manager will be particularly important to her work in the new position. I greatly value Satoko’s precision, problem-solving skills, and her ability to communicate complex information.”

Questions can be directed to Stuart Trippel on extension 4672 or at strippel@shoreline.edu.
