Events and News

Hello all, hope you are having a good week.  Always a busy one with a holiday in it – my day-to-day is completely back-to-back meetings – deep breath!

At the end of last week, Wendy Coates and I went to visit an organization downtown that provides food in various formats (restaurant, catering, etc.) to see if there might be any possibility of connecting with them on an educational level as well as on the food level.  Will keep you posted if anything develops on that one. Admin are meeting with community partners throughout the next 6 weeks or so to see if we can find some creative options out there.

I really enjoyed attending Philosophy Professor Dr. Paul Herrick’s presentation this week on The Philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King. I enjoyed learning more about Dr. King of course, and it was also really interesting to hear the connection between Dr. King’s brilliant writing and his overlap with many Western philosophers. As a philosophy minor I was particularly thrilled to reconnect to Kant, Buber, Plato, and more!  Hope we can help support more of these lunch-time presentations with faculty.

This morning Greg Cranson and I met with representatives of the Shoreline Police Department as a regular check-in and to discuss current concerns.  We discussed a couple possible projects to work together on as well as our concerns about supporting immigrants and refugee students on campus.  Our colleagues reminded us that local law enforcement DO NOT and MAY NOT enforce any aspect of immigration and are NOT ALLOWED to ask for anyone’s immigration status.  We will be bringing them to campus to do a presentation on this topic to help inform our community.

I am really looking forward to the faculty event tonight celebrating the academic achievements of our great faculty!  Hope to see you there in the Main Dining Room at 5:30 PM!

Cheers,

Jack
