REMINDER:  Faculty opportunity – AVID for Higher Education Summer Institute (July 6 – 8)

Please consider joining a Shoreline team at the AVID for Higher Education (AHE) Summer Institute (July 6 – 8). During her recent visit, Yvonne Ortiz noted that a common theme among our current practices and challenges was helping students build their identity as college students. The Summer Institute will be a time to identify ways we can infuse this theme into a first-year student success course, as well as all aspects of the Shoreline experience. The work of the campus team will continue throughout the 2016-17 academic year.

We have up to five slots for faculty (instructional or non-instructional) to join our campus team and attend the AHE Summer Institute with members of the AHE leadership team (Cheryl Roberts, Alison Stevens, Kim Thompson, Guy Hamilton, Stuart Trippel). If you have interest in joining this campus team, please submit brief (3 – 4 sentence) answers to questions below to Bayta Maring (bmaring@shoreline.edu) or Guy Hamilton (ghamilton@shoreline.edu) by Friday, June 10.

1. Please describe your personal interest in joining the AHE campus team.

2. If applicable, in what specific ways have you approached student growth and identity development either inside or outside the classroom (e.g., fostering a growth mindset, developing specific study skills, introducing college-level expectations, helping student navigate an educational pathway)?

The team will be selected by Tuesday, June 14, and will attend 1 – 2 planning sessions between June 14 and July 5. All team members will be traveling to Denver the evening of July 5 and returning the evening of July 8. All planning session and travel costs including per diem will be covered by the college. If you have questions about logistics of this trip, please contact Julie Bathke (jbathke@shoreline.edu).

AVID AHE coach on campus May 11 and 12

This week we will be welcoming Yvonne Ortiz from AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) for Higher Education (AHE). Yvonne is our AHE coach and will be coming to campus on Wednesday, May 11th and Thursday, May 12th.

The purpose of Yvonne’s visit is for her to learn about Shoreline’s key projects and future plans related to student success. In her two days here, Yvonne will engage in conversations with faculty and staff from instruction and student services. As our AHE coach, she can apply her wealth of experience and expertise to help us enhance and support our student success efforts. Yvonne’s visit provides an excellent opportunity for us to reflect on the work we have accomplished over the year and how to move forward even more effectively.

There are also two scheduled open sessions (below), as well as scheduled meetings with key groups throughout the visit.

AVID Fair Thurs., Oct. 15

AVID

Shoreline will be hosting an AVID Fair (Advancement via Individual Determination) Thurs., Oct. 15 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The fair will be held in the PUB Main Dining Room with 40 colleges representing their school for 20 high schools who will be attending. We anticipate hosting potential students to our campus from as far away as Granger and Olympia. You can view photos from last years event on flickr.

The Quiet Dining Room will be used as a hospitality suite for high school counselors and teachers. Every effort will be made to provide ample seating and eating areas for our current students. This is a three-hour block of time that will provide many to see our beautiful campus and plan on attending Shoreline Community College. Please say hi to these future students and let Amy Stapleton know if you have any questions or concerns at astapleton@shoreline.edu or at extension 7841.
