Happy International Open Access week!

International Open Access Week (Oct 24-30) is a time to coordinate across communities to make openness the default for research and to ensure that equity is at the center of this work. Open access (OA) refers to freely available, digital, online information. Open access scholarly literature is free of charge and often carries less restrictive copyright and licensing barriers than traditionally published works, for both the users and the authors. While OA is a newer form of scholarly publishing, many OA journals comply with well-established peer-review processes and maintain high publishing standards. To learn more about Open Access—as well as where to find Open Access articles—check out the Shoreline CC Library’s new Open Access and Open Data guide:https://library.shoreline.edu/openaccess

This year’s theme is “Open for Climate Justice” which speaks to the central role that open knowledge sharing and OA policies play in addressing our world’s most urgent problems. Openness can create pathways to more equitable knowledge sharing and service to address the inequities that shape the impacts of climate change and our response to them (“International Open Access Week”.)

Here are a few Open Access Week events happening online:

• The University of Oregon Libraries’ “Open for Climate Justice: A Panel with the Just Futures Institute,” Thursday, Oct. 27, 1-2pm (PST), via Zoom. Join the Pacific Northwest Just Futures Institute for Racial and Climate Justice and UO Libraries to learn about the design, theory, and creation of multimedia public scholarship projects. Representatives from the AfroIndigenous Healers, Stories of Fire: A Climate Justice Atlas, and the Atlas of Essential Work projects will discuss how their work is embedded within the concept of climate justice and reaching local, regional, national, and international communities. EVENTS AND NEWS

Good afternoon all,

I’m writing this introduction from New York City!  I honestly can’t remember the last time I was here.  While born in NY (and with relatives here) I do not get to the East Coast that much, and that certainly has been exacerbated by Covid.  I am here attending my first Association Community College Trustees (ACCT) conference with Trustees Lux and Wells. Attending as a team can really assist us in learning more about our roles and partnering on a shared mission.  One event I attended with the Trustees was the Improving Educational Outcomes for Men of Color Symposium. I will be sharing institutional recommendations with the campus upon my return.

Next week I will be sending a summary memo to the campus with a brief summary of the “Trust” project we discussed during my opening remarks at Opening Week, and it will include links to the raw data. The number of great suggestions and ideas was staggering.  Taking the advice from a few of the respondents, we will be prioritizing suggestions and moving those to action as a first step. Some have already begun, and I will update you on those as well. As these are moving forward, we will re-engage and adopt additional suggestions as we go.

In addition to these important methods of improving trust and communication, we will need to continue to engage in conversations that help us to identify the primary ways we will continue to serve, build our presence in the community, and align our work with the board goals (which were discussed this month and will be officially voted on in December).  We will begin working on our DEI Strategic plan. Until that plan is complete, we will need to focus on pre-planning to be sure we have plans and actions that align with our mission and board goals, serve those who are at Shoreline and those who should be.  This will also be in the memo next week.

During my opening presentation (and certainly over the last few months) I have had many conversations with folks about the external challenges to the college as well as the internal ones. Those conversations also included proud moments of exciting work with students, progress on concerns, and joy. We do have genuine challenges and I do not want to diminish the frustration that comes with those challenges. However, we also have several committed folks, including myself. We will continue to work with you to build structures and relationships that can work together to take on these challenges. I am very much looking forward to more stories of joy and progress as we move forward.

More soon- have a great week.

Best, Jack

Campus Updates 10/20/22

EVENTS AND NEWS

Good afternoon all,

This will be a short message from me as it’s been a crazy week! I wanted to remind everyone about the VP DEI candidates who are here today (10/20) and tomorrow (10/21). This is such an important hire for us, I am really looking forward to getting to know our candidates. I hope to see you at the forums.

I wanted to thank everyone who came to the Community Check-In last week. It was great seeing you (here or virtually) for camaraderie and discussion around areas for improvement. I did want to follow-up on a question that came up about positions and our grounds area. To confirm, we have two positions available right now. One is a full-time position and the other is hourly.

The big event this week for all of us was of course our accreditation visit last week. We should see a summary tomorrow from our accreditation representatives. To remind you, the commission won’t decide until January 2023. We will keep you posted on that as well.

Hope the rest of your week goes well!

Campus Alert: Air Quality 10/20/22

Dear Campus Community,

ET has continued to closely monitor conditions on campus today with regard to air quality as a result of the wildfire smoke in the area. With outdoor conditions continuing to be unhealthy for most populations, employees will continue to have the option to work remotely as they choose for Thursday, October 20, 2022. With this in mind:

  • All campus services will remain OPEN.
  • Service units are responsible for posting signage/online messaging regarding access to remote services today if applicable.
    • Signage should be posted with QR code or link to a zoom room for direct services.

Please note: Faculty may also choose to hold their in-person class(es) online today. If you choose to do so, please work with your students for any appropriate accommodations.

For those that choose to remain working on campus, please note the following safety precautions:

  1. Keep indoor air clean by keeping windows and doors closed
  2. Utilize fans to help circulate clean air inside.
  3. When possible limit or avoid time outdoors until the air quality improves.

As a reference, you can review current information on air quality index anytime online at https://www.airnow.gov/.

The College will continue to closely monitor air conditions tomorrow to determine campus modality for Friday, October 21, 2022.  If you have any questions, please contact your supervisor.
