EVENTS AND NEWS
Good afternoon all and happy first week back!
It’s been a bustling and busy week for everyone, and I hope your week is going well. Well, we have been on the “roller-coaster” of watching enrollment show “better than last year” one day, then “worse than last year” the next day. It isn’t quite as negative as last year, but as of this morning, we were tracking 4.5% year over year from this day last year. I know, there is a lot of hard work you are all doing to move us in the right direction—from faculty engagement in the classrooms to our financial aid staff, to advisors, to outreach and the “just-in-time” retention efforts in student services. We do have a lot of work to do to genuinely reverse this trend, better understand what is happening, and better serve this community. We are meeting with Ruffalo Noel Levitz to get some outside perspective on some of these issues. We will be sharing challenges and progress on these items at this meeting:

This week was very busy on my end. You may already know…our new VP for DEI Melanie Dixon joined us and it has been great working and learning with her. The two of us were able to meet DarNesha and Erwin Weary from Black Coffee Northwest and Suni Tolton the Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator for the City of Shoreline. We had a great conversation, and you can expect some very cool collaborations coming soon. The Executive Team (ET) has also begun a new training in intercultural competence to stretch our understanding and dedication to the implementation of DEI activities and to help onboard our new teammate!
We also met with MIG in ET to launch our Strategic Planning process. They will be meeting with the College Council and Strategic Planning Budget Council so we can create a Strategic Planning Taskforce which will be a group of faculty, staff, and students to move the process along. They will also be presenting at the Wednesday, January 25, 2023, Board of Trustees meeting. I encourage you to attend these open meetings to learn more about the process.
And finally, I wanted to update you about the VPFAS interview we held last week. Unfortunately, it did not work out and we were unable to hire someone. I do want to thank the faculty, staff, and administrators who took part in the process and to all of you for your understanding regarding this modified hiring process attempt. We will be going out with a regular recruitment attempt starting next week.
Looking FORWARD to seeing you all soon.
