Reminder! Let’s Talk About It: Understanding Suicide Workshop Tues., Nov. 3

Of the 1,100 college students who died by suicide last year, only 15-20% ever sought professional help. However, we know 67% of college students tell a friend they are feeling suicidal before telling anyone else.

How can you help get someone to professional help? Speak up. Reach out. Get Help. AND…be part of our discussion!

Understanding Suicide
Tuesday, November 3, 2015
12:30pm in the PUB, room 9208 (Quiet Dining Room)

We have invited a panel to campus to talk about one of the most difficult subjects in our culture: suicide. Join us to learn more about the signs and symptoms of suicidality from a personal perspective. Counselors from SCC Counseling Services will be available during and after the panel. All are welcome.

Join Counseling Services and Brooke Zimmers from Communication Studies to welcome guest speakers Laura Nelson and Laura Philip to our campus. Laura and Laura will increase understanding of suicide by presenting their personal stories and experiences, and sharing what recovery has looked like for them. They will discuss warning signs, ways to get someone help, and what has been helpful for them. We are pleased to welcome these speakers, who have both volunteered with the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention and Forefront: Innovations in Suicide Prevention.

SCC Counselors Gwyn Hoffman-Robinson and Sheryl Copeland will be available to provide information and resources after the presentation.

Last Day for “W” Grade and SEA updates

The Advising team would like to remind faculty, staff and students that THIS WEDNESDAY (Nov. 4) is the last day that a student can receive a “W” grade. Please advise your students of this and direct them to Advising or Enrollment Services if they have questions.

Shoreline Early Alert (SEA) Update:
In support of students in these and other situations, the Shoreline Early Alert (SEA) Team would like to remind you that the referral program is ongoing. Although our intention is to “catch” students in those early weeks, we also know that mid and end of quarter bring their own challenges and our team is here to support students through those times too.

The SEA Team wants to thank those who have utilized SEA (Shoreline Early Alert) this quarter. As of October 22, we received a total of 152 referrals.

We are seeing some trends in referrals and want to take the opportunity to add clarification to the intent and use of SEA.

Here are some quick takeaways to keep in mind when making a referral:

  • SEA is intended to:
    • be a positive and supportive experience for students
    • support students who may be showing or have indicated possible academic “red flags” (e.g. sudden decrease in test/quiz scores, sudden absenteeism with no indication as to why, continual tardiness with indication of transportation or family concerns, external concerns, etc.)
    • connect students with Success Coaching
    • direct students to appropriate resources
    • provide students with an opportunity to explore strategies for time management, organization, study habits, and to problem solve around these areas
  • SEA is NOT intended to be:
    • punitive, disciplinary, or a means for enforcing classroom policies (e.g., cell phone use, disruptive behavior, absenteeism associated with classroom policy, etc.)
    • Counseling or Advising; although students may be referred to the team around these issues, we make sure to work in collaboration with these departments, as appropriate. For a more serious concern, please see the STAT referral program.

You may notice our SEA Referral Form is continually evolving as we determine the best way for us to receive, respond and record information. Therefore, we request that referrals be made using the SEA Referral Form rather than sending individual emails. We also want to improve the user’s experience, so we will be surveying those of you who used the form to get additional feedback.

The SEA Team views the Early Alert process as a collaborative experience across campus with the intent to provide support to students in a variety of ways. We look forward to continuing to work with you and to support our students!

Meetings to review Vision, Mission statements

This message from President Cheryl Roberts was sent on Nov. 2, 2015 by email to all Shoreline Community College employees.

Dear Colleagues,

The new strategic plan for Shoreline Community College is nearing its final draft for presentation to our Board of Trustees in early 2016. In forming the plan, we have witnessed unprecedented participation from hundreds of members of our campus community. There have been thoughtful and rewarding conversations with both employees and students as well as  with members of our broader local and business communities. Thank you for all the work you have done thus far to shape our future!

The Strategic Plan Task Force and the Executive Leadership Team will work through the remainder of the year to refine the goals and objectives of the plan. At the same time, we want to have a discussion about our current vision and mission statements. This will allow us to inform the Board of Trustees, which sets the vision and mission of the College, that our campus community has spent time reviewing the statements for any proposed modifications. The purpose is not to propose a new vision or mission, but to ask whether anything in the current vision and mission is out of alignment with the strategic goals as they have been revised following the group discussions during Opening Week.

Laura Rehrmann, Special Assistant to the President, will facilitate two meetings to discuss the vision and mission statements. In reviewing the vision and mission, you will see the draft strategic goals as they now stand. I hope that you will be able to attend one of these sessions:

  • Thursday, November 12, 3:00–4:30 p.m., Room 1402
  • Tuesday, November 17, 8:30–10:00 a.m., Room 9201

There will also be an opportunity to contribute online for those who cannot attend in person.

In early winter quarter, we will share the new strategic plan with the campus community one last time, prior to presentation to the Board of Trustees. Then the work begins to join together in implementing our preferred future over the next five years.

Thank you again for your valuable participation as our strategic plan is developed. We are nearing the finish line!

Warmly,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

President
