Community Read: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The Center for Equity and Engagement (CEE), Campus Diversity Action Committee (CDAC) and the SCC Ray W. Howard Library invite you to join the Spring 2014 Community Read of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks written by Rebecca Skloot. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells a riveting story about the life of Henrietta Lacks and her family and the “untold story of how her cells were taken without her knowledge and have become one the most important tools in medicine.”
The book addresses issues related to family, race/ethnicity, gender, civil rights, economics, public health, medicine, research and ethics. Individuals who participate in the book conversation will have the opportunity to share their personal awareness and experiences, learning, and epiphanies. You will also have the opportunity to engage with SCC members and build community.
Members of Henrietta Lacks’ family will talk about the book and their experiences at a FREE event sponsored by Edmonds Community College on April 23, at 7 p.m. in the EdCC’s Black Box campus theatre. Please contact Yvonne Terrell-Powell at (x4509) or yterrell@shoreline.edu for more information about the Community Read.
Books will be available at the SCC bookstore beginning March 31. Individuals may also want to check out the book at their local library or purchase it online. The library has donated 5 books to support the community read. In addition, the SCC Foundation has donated 13 books to support the program. These books are FREE to students who want to participate in the Community Read and write a reflective piece (poems, journal, song, paper, etc.) and/or complete a course assignment. There also may be a possibility for classified staff to use professional development funds to purchase this book. Please see your Professional Development representative.
The group will meet on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. in room 9202.

Scheduling office on schedule
Room scheduling functions at Shoreline Community College will continue while staff changes are made.
Steve Gibler has returned temporarily to manage the bulk of the scheduling-office work. However, there will be a brief transition period as Gibler moves from his current part-time duties in cashiering. During this transition, Lynn Yaw will continue to assist with scheduling.
This isn’t the first time Gibler has pitched in to help with the job he retired from and held for many years. “Having Steve’s knowledge and experience with scheduling and the other duties of the office is tremendously helpful,” Interim Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Alison Stevens said.
Those across campus who need to interact with the scheduling office should do so as they normally would, Stevens said.
The duty shuffle is temporary as Human Resources works to post and fill the position on a permanent basis. Sharon Wines, who most recently filled the position, is no longer working for the college.
Second candidate withdraws from consideration
Dr. Warren J. Brown, a candidate for president at Shoreline Community, has withdrawn from consideration due to his acceptance of the presidency at North Seattle Community College.
Brown is currently executive vice president for instruction and student services at Seattle Central College and an adjunct faculty member for Seattle University’s doctoral program in educational leadership. His appointment at North Seattle was announced Wednesday, March 26, 2014.
Brown’s withdrawal leaves two candidates under consideration at Shoreline, including:
- Paula T. Langteau , Campus Dean and CEO at the University of Wisconsin-Marinette. Langteau is scheduled to interview at Shoreline on Monday, April 7.
- Dr. Cheryl Roberts, President of Chemeketa Community College, in Salem, Ore. Roberts is scheduled to interview Friday, April 11.
Public forums are scheduled for 2:45-3:45 p.m. on each of the interview days, in the PUB cafeteria, on campus.
The forums are open to the public.
