Patrick Higby

Pat was uniquely special to our students. He passed away on February 13 of this year.  He was patient with struggling students – after working with him, they both understood the math better and felt less anxious about it.  He had some creative ways of explaining things, which were effective.

Kim Thompson, Dean of Students, said that in the end, the thing that will stand as Pat’s lasting legacy will be the role he played in the lives of students at Shoreline Community College. He was a beloved tutor and will always be remembered for working minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, day-by-day, with literally thousands of students in our Math lab and as a private tutor.

It was a humble job, it didn’t pay that well and didn’t come with big accolades, but he loved it and he was good at it. He was patient, gentle, funny, and his ability to help students learn was legendary. He lives on in the lives of the students he helped.

Pat also wrote five books on the “Adventures of Jim McClair.”

A memorial is planned at the Math Learning Center for Friday, March 7, at 3:30 p.m. Please come and share thoughts of Pat or one of his tutoring tips.
