Campus systems migrating to Windows 10 over summer

Over the past year, Technology Support Services has afforded the opportunity for faculty and staff to upgrade their systems to Windows 10. Now, during the summer quarter and through summer break, Technology Support Services will be migrating all Windows 7 and 8 systems to Windows 10. The majority of this will be completed during the evening and weekend time periods to minimize any disruption to normal operations. By start of fall quarter, all systems on campus will be Windows 10.

TSS strongly encourages everyone to upgrade their office computers at their earliest possible convenience. There is still time to complete this process on your own schedule. Before you depart for the day, open Software Center and choose the option “Windows 10 1703 upgrade” and complete the few clicks to start the process. The next morning your system will be running Windows 10. You will no longer have to worry about the assistive migration process during the summer periods. While you are at it, go ahead and upgrade to Office 2016 afterward.

Should you have any questions, comments or concerns, or simply wish a little assistance getting started, please let TSS know and we will be more than happy to assist.

The Servant of Two Masters, written by Carlo Goldoni in 1743, was an attempt at reviving Comedia dell’arte by scripting the dialogue and still leaving room for improvisation. The play focuses on a simple-minded character named Truffaldino, who brings trouble on himself when he attempts to care for two masters at once without either finding out.

Before You Wave Goodbye to 2016-17, Please Help Tutoring Services Recruit New Tutors!

It was such a pleasure to honor all of our graduates with you on Sunday! It was also bittersweet to see so many tutors among the graduates. We’re extremely proud of them, but we’re also really going to miss them as they move on to their next adventures. Many of our current tutors will not be returning after this spring, so we are actively seeking new tutors across the curriculum. As you wrap up your spring quarter, please reach out to any of your students who you think would excel in a job supporting others while sharing their knowledge and encourage them to apply to become tutors! Students don’t always think of themselves as “tutor material,” so encouragement from their instructors and mentors can make a very meaningful impact.

To qualify for an interview, applicants should:

• have at least a 3.5 or an instructor recommendation (forms available) in the courses to be tutored and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
• have a strong desire to help others learn with professionalism and patience!
• carefully fill out our application, including brief but thoughtful responses to the two questions at the end.

We do our best to provide tutors to students in ANY course offered at Shoreline Community College, from accounting to visual communications technology, so we are interested in tutors across the curriculum. Most recently, we have struggled to meet the student demand in areas such as business technology, geography, nursing, statistics, and a wide variety of 200-level STEM courses, and we know we are losing tutors in a wide sweep of courses, from accounting to physics, Japanese to nutrition, computer science to communication studies, and much more.

Tutoring Services welcomes and encourages both domestic and international student applicants as well as qualified non-students, and we strive to employ tutors who represent the diversity of SCC’s student population. There is a hiring process for all applicants, which can take time as it moves from the initial application, to an interview, to paperwork, to HR processing and activation. Qualified domestic students who are interviewed and offered a position might start three or more weeks from their date of application. Given the month+ timeline for acquiring a social security card through completing new hire paperwork, qualified international students often have a longer wait to start actively tutoring. Because of the time this hiring process takes, we are particularly interested in those who will be able to tutor more than one quarter, but we consider all qualified applicants.

Thank you for helping us recruit a wonderful new bunch of tutors to join our team!

President Roberts signs the Second Nature Climate Commitment

Cheryl Roberts joins a long list of other college and university presidents, mayors, governors, and business leaders to sign an open letter in support of the requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions laid out in the Paris Accord.

“Leaders across the United States economy are stepping up to show that we are committed to doing our part to reduce emissions and protect the planet’s health.” said President Roberts.

The open letter states, “The Paris Agreement is a blueprint for job creation, stability and global prosperity. We recognize its critical importance and will continue to pursue a clean energy future as the best chance we have to create jobs, promote trade, spur innovation, and preserve American competitiveness in a 21st century economy.”

The coalition, organized by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and environmental advocacy group Second Nature, which is leading the effort in higher education, plans to negotiate with the United Nations to accept its participation in the agreement alongside other country’s contributions.
