Reminder! Flu shot clinic Wed., Sept. 21

Shoreline will host a flu immunization clinic from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Room 9202 PUB. Immunizations will be available by the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association for students, faculty, and staff.

The association can bill most major health insurance plans – Regence, Premera, Group Health, United Healthcare, Molina, Community Health plan, Coordinated Care, and Aetna – for the flu immunizations. They do not bill Cigna, Kaiser, or TriCare. In order to process the billing, those receiving a flu shot must complete a patient consent form, which includes name, address, date of birth, and individual insurance subscriber number.

For those without insurance, the shots are $28, which can be paid in cash or check. Credit or debit cards are not accepted.

More information about vaccinations is available on this flyer and at www.cdc.gov/flu.

According to health officials, in addition to vaccination, personal preventative measures are among the most effective in preventing getting and spreading diseases such as the flu. Recommendations include:

  • Practice good hygiene
    • Wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand cleaners. When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or use your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Know the signs and symptoms
    • Look for signs of fever, such as feeling very warm, a flushed appearance, and sweating or shivering. A fever is a temperature taken with a thermometer that is equal to or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius.

Ongoing efforts by the college to promote flu awareness and health include:

  • Posting informational posters about hand-washing and germ-containment practices in all restrooms
  • Keeping restrooms well-stocked with soap and paper towels
  • Using good custodial practices, including:
    • Complete restroom cleaning
    • Disinfectant wipe-downs of door handles
    • Spray disinfectant for commonly touched surfaces

The college website has additional information about measures in place regarding infectious diseases.

Shoreline Early Alert 2016-17

DEAR CAMPUS:

As we begin a new quarter, we would like to remind you about Shoreline Early Alert (SEA).

SEA is a referral program to serve ALL (domestic and international) students on campus. SEA is designed to provide academic intervention to students encountering difficulty in the pursuit of their academic goals. We recognize that intervention is a process and may not produce immediate results. That is why it is our goal is to reach out to the student early in the quarter and connect them to the appropriate resources.

Examples of SEA referrals include:

Low test scores
Unexplained excessive absenteeism or tardiness
Pacing in an online class
Not doing assignments
Financial matters
External concerns

MAKE A REFERRAL!
Use the SEA Referral Form rather than sending individual emails. A SEA Team member will respond to the referral within 24 hours by reaching out to both you and the student. We continue to reach out to the student in order to set up an initial meeting where we assess the student’s needs and most appropriate resources.

Examples of resources SEA Team members refer students to:

Success Coaching
International Education services
Tutoring Services
Counseling Services
Advising Services
…and much more!

Please view our flyer and visit our site to learn more about SEA or to view our Referral Form.

We look forward to continuing to work with you and to support our students!

Thanks,
SEA Team

Construction update for fall 2016 and where to find services the first weeks of school

The following announcement regarding construction updates and the relocation of services around campus went out to current students. Please familiarize yourself with the information below to ensure you’re able to help students find their way around campus in the first few weeks of fall quarter.

Thank you!

Welcome to fall quarter! The construction team has been working hard all summer to update the campus. Some areas are still under construction, so here is where you’ll find the services you need to be successful this quarter.

Library Services:

  • Borrow or reserve books/textbooks in the Pagoda Student Union Building (PUB), room 9203, until September 26.
  • The Library main doors will open on October 3. Until then, please use the first-floor entrances on the east side of the building to access the Library and Learning Centers (there are stairs and an accessible elevator on the first floor).

ID Cards and Automated Teller Cash Machine (ATM):

  • ID cards can be obtained now in the Bookstore and the HigherOne ATM is located right outside the Bookstore.

Tutoring Services and Learning Centers:

Computer Lab:

  • The computer lab remains on the first floor of the 4000 building and is open and ready to help.

Career Education Options (CEO) Program:

  • The CEO program relocated to the first floor of the FOSS 5000 building. Some remodel work will continue in this new combined Workforce and CEO area for a short time, so please be patient as we build a great space.

Ongoing Construction Areas:

  • Some construction will continue in the 1400 Classroom Building, 1600 Theater Building, 1900 Parent Child Center, 2500 Manufacturing Building, 2700 Science Building, and 2900 Annex Classroom Building. Please be aware of and obey caution tape and fencing that marks the construction areas.

Once the construction is complete, the newly remodeled areas of campus will be an even better place to learn! The College is happy you are here and wishes you a great fall 2016.
