SUBJECT:  Learning Outcomes Assessment Training Clarification

The Learning Outcomes Assessment Training is going strong with 36 people enrolled! Below is a bit more clarification about who is eligible to participate.

For Module 1 (Available now!), which is a brief introductory training to Learning Outcomes Assessment, any part-time or full-time faculty who has been employed as faculty at Shoreline within the last academic year (Fall 2019 through Spring 2020).  Enroll now at:  https://shoreline.instructure.com/enroll/M4JMTN

The longer training (Modules 2 – 5, available May 20) is a good summer project, but may require some planning in spring quarter. In addition, the training requires participants to conduct an assessment of a learning outcome with actual student work samples, and they should be able to report on their project (if needed) at the Fall 2020 accreditation visit. Hence, faculty who are eligible for the longer training need to:

  • have taught a class within the last academic year, and still have access to all student submissions for an assignment that allows students to demonstrate their learning described by one of the course outcomes, and
  • be full-time, priority associate, or associate faculty and on the schedule for Fall 2020
  • have completed the first module of the training
  • have a reasonable plan for completing the project by August 15, 2020

The project-based training will be made available on May 20.  One week prior to that, faculty who have enrolled in the class will receive a follow-up questionnaire about their plans to complete the project-based training and the eligibility criteria above.

If you have questions about the training, please contact Bayta Maring (bmaring@shoreline.edu;  206-546-6949).

Subject: Suspension of most Committee & Council work for spring quarter

Dear Colleague,

I am following up related to the College’s current remote status and commitment of service at the College. We have become increasingly aware of the time it is taking to work with our students in this new remote environment. The Executive Team (ET) and I have made the decision based on comments from administrators, faculty, and staff to suspend most of the committees and councils (we currently have over 60 active constituent groups). However, there will be a limited number of committees/councils that will continue to ensure that we can move forward critical outcomes for the College.

For the remainder of the quarter, the following will continue:

  • Division Planning Meetings (DPCs)
  • Appointment Review Committees (ARCs)
  • Division Meetings
  • Care Team (https://www.shoreline.edu/care-team/)
  • Curriculum Committee
  • Joint Union Management Committee (JUMC)
  • Union Management Communication Committee (UMCC)
  • Committee for the Resolution of Academic Grievances (CRAG)
  • Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) (as needed)
  • Student Conduct (as needed)
  • Professional Development (as needed)
  • Guided Pathways (paid roles and/or released positions)
  • Learning Outcomes (paid roles and/or released positions)
  • Accreditation (paid roles and/or released positions)
  • Communicable Disease Team (CDT) (Organizing our COVID-19 response)

It is our hope that this time gained from these service commitments can be dedicated to your own learning, teaching, and support of your students. Although this may be an unusual measure, we feel it is necessary to ensure that all of us have the time needed to support our students and each other during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With care and consideration of you in your Shoreline roles,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

2015-18 audit reports and financial statement now available

Greetings,
Last week I promised to post our newest financial statement and our 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18 audit reports to the College Budget SharePoint site. Here are these documents for your reference.

It really has been a long and winding road. Finishing four years of financial statements and working with the State Auditor’s Office has been time consuming but satisfying now that everything is winding down.

The 2018-2019 financial statement has now been shared with the State Auditor. They will be working to finish this last audit before June 30th. This will be a daunting task attempting to audit by not coming to our campus. I will keep you posted in our regular updates to the campus. Also, we will start posting monthly budget status reports to the site.

A side note is that in all three audits, we were in full compliance and had a “clean” opinion.

As I reported earlier, we had one finding in our 2017-2018 audit. They recalculated the accounts receivable balance and determined the balance is not correctly calculated and classified. They determined the current portion of accounts receivable was overstated by $8,852,651 and Long-term Due to Other Agencies was understated by $8,852,651. This change in no way affected our financial statement.

If you have any questions regarding our financials or audits please feel free to contact Satoko or myself.

Stay Safe,

Bill Saraceno

Interim Chief Financial Officer
