The First-Year Experience (FYE) initiative is designed to help new students navigate college life through a series of recommended classes, orientation activities, and support services. It is an umbrella term that offers students the following:

• Get In Gear (GIG): GIG classes combine two subjects and two faculty together in one block class with coordinated assignments and integrated study skills for college success. Complete a full-time schedule (12 credits) with the same peers in one learning community.
• Explore Future Areas of Study with Convenient Block Schedules: New students can explore future areas of study by enrolling in selected pairs of classes, conveniently scheduled during the 12:30 block (Mon/Wed or Tue/Thu). Some of the courses in these pairs have integrated college success skills into their curricula (designated as FYE).
• Additional courses recommended for first-year students: These two or five credit courses integrate college success skills into the academic experience (designated FYE).
• New Student Orientation and Student Support Services:  New students are encouraged to take advantage of all the support services Shoreline offers.

• We encourage faculty and student services staff to review the attached flyer and keep it on hand, so you may recommend these opportunities to new students. You can also encourage your students to contact Advising for help choosing among the many different options.

We are currently accepting applications to join the Fall 2018 cohort, who will be revising courses for Winter 2019. Apply here. Thurs., May 17 is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD).

• When you think of the word “diversity,” what comes to mind?
• When you contemplate minority identity, is disability included?

On Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we acknowledge an aspect of diversity that is seldom represented in discussions of equity and cultural humility. Yet, according to the Institute on Disability, “disability is the largest minority that anyone can join at any time.”

As we work to promote Inclusive Excellence at Shoreline, here are a few ways employees can get involved in promoting access for all by expanding their own awareness of accessibility issues. 

• Gain empathy for user experience by taking the #NoMouse Challenge on your usual websites and software. Did you find them to be Accessible?
• Enroll in these asynchonous Canvas courses that teach introductions to designing Accessible digital content.
