Fire evacuation drill in FOSS, March 29

On Friday, March 29th, 2019, at 2:00 PM, Safety & Security will be conducting a Fire Evacuation Drill in Building 5000 (FOSS). This drill is designed to give students, staff, and visitors the opportunity to practice emergency procedures in a simulated but safe environment. This also gives employees tasked with emergency duties (Safety & Security and Building Evacuation Monitors) an opportunity to train for emergency situations.

The alarm will be triggered at 2:00 PM and all occupants must evacuate the building and will be directed to designated assembly areas. Safety & Security and Building Evacuation Monitors will be conducting sweeps of the building to ensure all occupants are out and safe. Once the building has been confirmed as clear, the alarm will be silenced, the drill will be completed, and occupants will be allowed to enter the building and resume their normal activities.

Please note, if you are in the building when the alarm sounds, it is MANDATORY that you evacuate.

If you have any questions. Please contact the Safety & Security Department in Room 5102.

What you need to know about Rave Alert messages

With the many weather-related campus closures this month, several people have asked when and how Rave Alert messages are sent at the College. Here are some explanations and tips to help everyone understand how to get the most out of this tool.

What is Rave Alert?

  • Rave Alert is an automated emergency messaging system that the College can activate to send an urgent message to students and employees via text, email, voicemail, and social media.

Who receives Rave Alert messages?

  • Current students and employees are automatically subscribed to Rave Alert, using the information we have in the College database.
  • Community members (those who do not have Shoreline email addresses) can voluntarily opt-in to receive alerts by signing up on the Community Member Alert web page.
  • The system is designed to automatically stop sending to people who are no longer listed as active employees. Occasionally former employees receive an alert because some employee records remain active beyond an employee’s separation date. Former employees are able to unsubscribe at any time if they receive an alert in error.

How do I unsubscribe or change the way I receive alerts?

When does the College send Rave Alert messages?

  • Rave Alert is most often activated when inclement weather affects College operations, but would also be used in the event of a campus emergency, such as a fire, earthquake, or other unsafe situation.
  • During weather events, the Executive Team, Facilities, and Safety & Security work together to carefully evaluate the safety conditions on campus. If a closure or late start is needed, they attempt to send out messaging either the night before or by 5:00 a.m.
  • Weather and road conditions can sometimes change rapidly. If plans must change on short notice, the Executive Team re-evaluates the safest course of action for the campus community and sends an updated alert as early as possible. Sometimes this may occur after 5:00 a.m., depending on the event, and we understand this may create confusion or hardship for some students and employees.
  • Rave Alerts are not sent when the College is open and operating under normal conditions, so if you do not receive an alert and do not see a message on the College website, you can assume the College is operating normally.

Where else is emergency information posted?

In addition to Rave Alert messages, the College publishes emergency information in several places:

  • The College website will have an alert banner at the top of every page.
  • The main phone line will be updated with closure details (206-546-4101).
  • Local news stations will post school closure information on TV, radio, and the internet during major weather events.
  • The College’s primary Facebook and Twitter accounts will be updated to reflect closure information.

Still have questions about Rave Alert? Feel free to email pio@shoreline.edu.

Get ready for the Great Washington Shakeout Thurs., Oct. 18

Dear Colleagues,

The annual October event, The Great ShakeOut, has become part of the Shoreline Community College culture with staff, faculty, and students participating annually. This year’s shakeout event is on Thurs., Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m.

The ShakeOut has been an excellent awareness tool for encouraging all departments on our campus to prepare for emergencies and disasters. This year, areas of the U.S. were severely impacted by hurricanes and wildfires, and our Pacific Northwest region can also be potentially impacted by a different natural hazard threat: earthquakes. So please remember to Drop, Cover, & Hold On.

This year Shoreline Community College will be participating in this worldwide earthquake preparedness awareness effort by testing a classroom alert notification system called LYNX. All smart classrooms on campus have a LYNX software program enabled and located on the instructor’s main computer. The LYNX system will allow Shoreline Emergency Management team members to send an alert communication inside the classrooms via projection screen. Once the LYNX message has been received, instructors can easily clear out of the screen by pressing the escape button. If you are interested in how LYNX alert system works, please view the LYNX training video posted on CANVAS.

When:
The ShakeOut for this year is scheduled for October 18, 2018 at 10:18 a.m. Everyone on campus is encouraged to participate.

What to Do:
At Shoreline, college officials suggest three things to get ready for the Great Washington Shakeout drill:

#1. Read the plan
– Go to http://www.shoreline.edu/safetyandsecurity/emergency-preparedness.aspx to see Shoreline’s emergency preparedness information and the Emergency Management Response plan.
– Go to  https://www.shakeout.org/washington/

#2. Make sure you that you are signed up to receive the campus RAVE ALERT messages
– Go to https://www.shoreline.edu/Connect to add phone numbers and additional email accounts to your message preferences

#3. Do the drill on Oct. 18th at 10:18 a.m.
If it is appropriate for where you are:
DROP to the ground
– Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table
HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops

In addition, demonstrations of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and Stryker evacuation chairs will take place from 11:00 a.m-12:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 18th, in the main lobby of 9000 Building.

Remember, the LYNX message will only be a test.

Annual fire alarm inspection week of August 27-31

Dear Colleague,

Safety & Security and Johnson Controls will be conducting a mandated annual fire alarm testing throughout the entire week of August 27-31.

On Fri., Aug. 31, starting at 8 a.m., the fire alarm inspection team will be going building to building to activate each individual fire alarm to inspect the horn signals and strobes. The alarm sound activation will only last a short few seconds and, once the technician is able to inspect the entire building, they will then shut off the alarm and return the system back to normal mode.

If you have any questions about the fire alarm testing, please contact Safety & Security at X4633. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Edwin
