Campus Updates 10/13/22

EVENTS AND NEWS

Good afternoon all,

I can’t believe the week has just flown by.  It’s been a busy one here for sure with a lot going on- I imagine it is the same for you.  I am very much looking forward to meeting our colleagues from the NWCCU Accreditation team tomorrow and discussing all the progress we have made on our accreditation recommendations.   A HUGE thank you to the faculty, staff, and admin teams who have spent countless hours making much progress on our learning outcomes assessment and academic planning processes.  These initial steps help set the stage for our next steps in planning and tying everything we do to data, DEI, and the mission.  Looking forward to all of that movement into the future.  More updates soon!

At the end of last week, I attended the WACTC meeting virtually and heard updates from the state board and presidents across the state.  It was a very informative meeting.  It is always great to hear how other colleges are handling different issues and also to make new connections.  Speaking of which, I will be meeting with the president of Cascadia this week just to connect and share ideas.  I am looking forward to getting to know President Murray and learning about his experiences in the region.

This weekend I came to the campus theater to help introduce Councilperson Chris Roberts who introduced the film Promised Land to an audience of community members and students.  The film is a documentary about the Duwamish and Chinook struggle toward Federal recognition.  It was powerful.  Councilmember Roberts shared his own experiences as a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and his support for our local communities.  The panel following was also very moving.  It was great to connect with panel members afterward to discuss other ways the college may connect in the future.

I also stopped by the 6×6 Northwest event.  It was PACKED! It was great seeing all the people and children there waiting to see if anyone was interested in buying their art. It was awesome to see so many people come out for it. I did see Shoreline folks in attendance as well.

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended virtually or in-person to our first community check-in event. Even at 8 am, we had an impressive showing!! I really appreciate the candor and honesty with which folks brought up concerns as well as the willingness to be silly and have some fun (and coffee of course). I will be following up on a couple concerns that were brought up and report updates to campus.

Best,

Jack

Getting vaccinated and boosted is still the best way to fight COVID-19. The Washington State Department of Health vaccine locator at Vaccinate WA: Find COVID-19 Vaccine Providers Near You can help you find the most convenient option for you. The CDC recommends getting a bivalent Pfizer (ages 12+) or Moderna vaccine (ages 18+) if it’s been two months or more since your last booster or vaccination.

Thank you, from Bonnie Madison (SCC retiree)

Dear Campus,

I am writing to express my gratitude for the support, compassion, and thoughtfulness that I experienced while I worked at Shoreline Community College. I have countless memories, laughs, and moments that are simply unforgettable. Retiring from the college was bittersweet, in that I felt as though I was leaving family behind. Thank you for the many years of happiness.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Madison

Transition of IADM Addresses Accreditation Recommendations

Dear Campus Colleagues,

As we prepare for an accreditation visit on Friday, October 14th, I am pleased to share organizational changes that help address recommendations from our accreditors.

The Office of Institutional Assessment and Data Management (IADM) will become Planning & Institutional Effectiveness (PIE), led by an Executive Director-Institutional Effectiveness.  The College is recruiting for that position right now. The Executive Director will report directly to me and serve on Executive Team. We have received an accreditation recommendation that the entire institution needs to practice regular, data-informed planning in order to be effective at meeting our mission. PIE will help us in that effort.

Relevant personnel details are below:

  • Dr. Bayta Maring, Executive Director – IADM, has requested to move to a part-time position focused solely on learning outcomes assessment and will transition into that role on October 15th.  Dr. Maring has been reporting to Dr. Ann Garnsey-Harter, Associate VP-Learning Resources & Institutional Effectiveness, since July 1, in preparation for the transition.
  • PIE will include the Office of Institutional Research, with Celine Pastore continuing as Research Analyst & Reporting Lead. There are plans to hire a Data Analyst, funded by Guided Pathway monies.
  • PIE also will include the Grants Office, which will endeavor to secure funds to support the College’s upcoming strategic planning efforts. Dr. Cheryl Allendoerfer was hired as Director – Grants on April 1, 2022.
  • PIE also will include ctcLink functional support, headed by Douglas Haub, who was hired as Lead Business & Data Analyst on October 1, 2021.
  • Jenifer Aydelotte will continue in her Program Specialist role and eventually will report outside of PIE to Student Learning, Equity, & Success (SLES).
  • Romina Plozza was hired as Acting Director of Learning Outcomes Assessment July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023, and will continue to work closely with Dr. Maring; eventually, both will report outside of PIE to SLES.
  • As of October 15th, all staff members above will report temporarily to Dr. Garnsey-Harter until a permanent replacement for Dr. Maring is hired.  Dr. Garnsey-Harter temporarily reports to me to support these efforts during this transition.

Regards,

Dr. Jack Kahn
