EVENTS AND NEWS  

Good afternoon all, I hope all is well.  It has been a busy week!  Good news from my office, first-level interviews for the VP of DEI have concluded, and we will be bringing candidates to campus in the next couple of weeks.  Thank you so much to the team that worked to get us this far.  Stay tuned for information about forums and more. This is pretty exciting folks! 

I had the opportunity to meet with Debbie Tarry who is the outgoing City Manager for Shoreline.   We had met previously but because I was eager to learn more about her ideas on how to get SCC more integrated into City Planning, she was willing to meet again.  We brainstormed some ideas which I will bring you all soon for feedback.   

I also had the opportunity to meet with our new Associated Student Government president Chloe Mok.  Chloe is eager to get started and work with her colleagues to set goals and see great work happen this year.  Unsurprisingly, when asked if she knew of any “hot topics” for students right now, her answer was coffee and hot food (bad pun I know).  As we work through those details, I will share more.  

Great things are happening on campus!  I have been meeting with faculty and staff over the last couple of weeks to learn more about their history at the college and ideas on how to assist us in moving forward. There also was a GREAT event at the Multicultural Center. This was a welcome-back activity with a beautiful cake and empanadas from various regions in Latin America.  Jamie Ardeña did such a great job with his team of students- hope you were able to catch the palpable excitement there this week.  

And finally, I got to meet Dolphie!  It was of course a VIP event to meet the new Shoreline mascot.  The lines were huge, and the paparazzi were nuts. All the stars were there trying to get their photos with Dolphie. In all seriousness, it was a super fun event coordinated by the Athletic department. Besides Dolphie there was lemonade, popcorn, and athletic gear. It was brimming with stars, our students, staff, and faculty! 

On a personal note, last weekend I went to a Water/Sustainability Conservation Expo in Snohomish. It was put on by Master Gardeners in the area and had several booths and workshops on topics like soil fertilization, indigenous plant support, problematic pest, etc. My wife and I are particularly interested in learning about rain barrel projects that preserve rainwater for later use in gardening. I *just* put together two garden beds, which I am excited to set up, and am hoping to learn about this method of water conservation. If there are any experts out there- let me know! I’m ready to learn.

RETURN TO CAMPUS/COVID-19  

Cases  

• Covid cases: 10 positive cases of COVID-19 were reported to the College during the week from September 28 to October 4, down 3 from last week. 

• A reminder: if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or test positive, please submit a report! Coronavirus (COVID-19) Exposure Report Form – Formstack

The CDC recommends getting a bivalent Pfizer (ages 12+) or Moderna vaccine (ages 18+) if it’s been two months or more since your last booster or vaccination.
