Title IX Refresher Training 6/16 2-3pm

All employees are required to complete annual training on Title IX. This live virtual session meets that requirement. We’ll review your rights and responsibilities under Title IX and discuss recent updates to the law that have resulted in changes to Shoreline’s response procedures. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions and apply your knowledge to real-life scenarios. Please email TitleIXCoordinator@shoreline.edu to register.

Commencement Updates – Week of June 13

We’re just a week away from this year’s Commencement! For those of you who are planning to attend or help out with the ceremonies, here is some important information and reminders:

  • Faculty and staff rental regalia for those who ordered it will be available for pick up in the Student Life office (PUB 9301) from Mon. 6/13-Thu. 6/16, or on the day of Commencement from 3024. Please only take the regalia that has your name on it. Regalia must be returned to PUB 9203 on the day of Commencement after the conclusion of the reception.

  • Faculty and staff who are participating in the Commencement processional should walk down the ramp in front of the Gym to the line-up area and check-in 45 minutes before their ceremony begins. Faculty and staff participating in both morning and afternoon ceremonies are welcome to join the lunch provided to volunteers at 12:00 p.m. in room 3002. Please note: faculty/staff who are also volunteering in other capacities should have received a separate e-mail with more information about their role.

  • Volunteers are still needed to help before, during, and after both ceremonies. There are a variety of available roles that can work around your participating in the ceremony itself, including:
  • Setup/Cleanup
  • Ushers
  • Greeter/Program Distributor
  • Will Call/Tickets
  • Graduate Check-in
  • Faculty/Staff Check-in

All of these roles have the option of being from 8am-12pm or 12-4pm or both if you’re available/willing to help out during the whole time. Classified staff are encouraged to work with their supervisors to flex their time within the week. Please go to this form if you are available to help out and let us know the roles you’re interested in and the times that you’re available.

  • Students who signed up for Commencement received an e-mail with information about the following:
  • Confirming their participation in the morning or afternoon ceremony by going to the Commencement website.
  • If they have not yet received their regalia from Jostens, to contact their customer service at (800) 567-8367.
  • Graduates will line-up at the bottom of the ramp on the first floor of the Gym (3000 building) and should plan to check-in 75 minutes before their ceremony begins.
  • Graduates should watch the Commencement rehearsal video prior to coming to campus on June 18th. The video provides an overview of the ceremony as well as helpful information for guests. All faculty/staff who are attending Commencement are also encouraged to watch the video so that they know what to expect on the day of.
  • Tickets are required for all guests except children under 5 years of age who will sit on an adult’s lap for the entirety of the event. Tickets have been sent by mail to graduates who selected that delivery method. For graduates who selected “pick up on campus” or “will call”, tickets are available in the Student Life office (PUB 9301) next Monday-Thursday, and then all unclaimed tickets will be available on the day of Commencement out in front of the Gym. Guests without a ticket will be directed to overflow rooms in the Gym or PUB to watch a livestream of the ceremony.

We look forward to joining you as we celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2022 next Saturday, June 18th. If you have any questions about Commencement, please e-mail commencement@shoreline.edu.

Guided Pathways E-Newsletter

Tuesday June 6, 2022. Sixth edition

What is this Newsletter for?

This newsletter is an effort to keep campus employees informed of our Guided Pathways-related efforts, to share stories from projects, and address questions. It is intended to complement our Canvas site, our update reports, and any webinars that we may offer.

Spotlight: Future Career and Transfer Center

There is some common agreement that our college should provide career services to our students. Likewise, that we help transfer students with their preparation and transition to Bachelor-granting schools. We do these things currently, but in a distributed and uneven fashion. To meet our obligation to all students, and ensure we provide easy-to-access support, there is an emerging desire to create a centralized unit dedicated to these services is the next step in our college’s development. The desire to help students identify their ultimate goals (why they are here) so that we can help them identify the educational path that will serve their aims, aligns well with the GP framework.

In the winter, Brigid interviewed diverse internal stakeholders to get a sense of what we currently offer, and to develop an (initial) aspirational vision.

This spring, a small workgroup is developing recommendations for “Year 1” of our effort to grow a Center for these services, and we’re starting with career exploration and job-seeking services.

Plans for Year 1 (2022-23) include

  • A dedicated, easy-to-find physical space on the main floor of the PUB
  • An online tool that prospective and current students can use to explore their interests and potential career paths (PathwayU)
  • A full-time (temp) academic advisor who is especially skilled in working with undecided students in determining their career aspirations and academic pathway. Welcome Matt Allen!
  • Amplifying the valuable skills of our WorkSource employment specialist, Laura Aunan. (She works with the Employment Security Dept of the state, and can help students with resumes, interview preparation, and more.)
  • Hiring a dedicated Internship Coordinator, using Perkins funding
  • Identifying leadership needs and planning Year 2!

Co-leads: Brigid and Lauren Hadley

Spotlight: Getting involved next year

In the previous edition of this newsletter I described many ways to get involved in the coming year.

I linked this grid of projects and all the different ways faculty can contribute to the work. There have been operational delays in getting opportunities formally posted.

If you are keen to apply for a role, please contact me directly and I will get you an unofficial (unposted) version of the job announcement so that you can prepare your letter of application.

Fitness Center and Main Gym will be closed after June 9, 2022

The Fitness Center will re-open for summer quarter starting July 11 through August 18, on the below days and times. Main Gym will be closed throughout summer. This information will also be posted on our Intramurals webpage: Intramurals, Wellness & Vitality | Shoreline Community College.
