Message from President Roberts: Statement on Anti-Asian Racism & Hate Crimes

Dear Colleague,

Shoreline Community College unequivocally denounces the rise in anti-Asian racism, discrimination, and hate crimes in many communities across the nation. We join with all Washington community and technical colleges to stand in solidarity with our Asian Americans and Pacific Islander students, employees, friends, family members, and neighbors, and we affirm our commitment to their safety and well-being.

Shoreline’s ongoing pledge to uphold an inclusive and equitable campus environment is reflected in our College Community Standard Statement.

If you or someone you know at the College may benefit from emotional or mental support, please know students may access free counseling at the Counseling Center (206-546-4594) and employees may access services through our Employee Assistance Program (877-313-4455). Additionally, I’d like to remind everyone about our Bias Incident Report Form

At a time when we are all facing multiple personal, political, social, economic, and health stresses in our lives, it is even more critical for us to come together, not to divide and demean.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Changes to Campus Access Protocols

Dear Colleague,

With recent changes in state public health guidance, we are making some changes to the way pre-approved employees and students may access campus during remote operations.

Changes to Employee Check-In Protocol

Starting Monday, March 15, employees who regularly work on campus will no longer be required to stop at the temperature check station in the PUB (Pagoda Union Building) upon arrival. However, it is critical that all employees coming to campus continue to check in and out online using the Campus Access Form. Going forward, supervisors will receive an email indicating employees have checked in using the Access Form so they can help ensure it is being consistently used by employees who are authorized to access campus.

Changes to Student Check-In Protocol

Students who are approved to come to campus for classes will continue to check in at the station in the Automotive Showroom (Room 2120) upon arrival but will no longer need to have their temperature taken. They will also need to continue using the Campus Access Form each day they come to campus.

Updated Out-of-State Travel Recommendations

While Washingtonians are encouraged to stay home or in their region and avoid non- essential travel to other states or countries, Shoreline’s Campus Access Form has been updated to align with current statewide travel quarantine guidance. The form now recommends – but does not require – out-of-state travelers who want to come to campus to self-quarantine for 14 days after arrival in the state (limiting their interactions to their immediate household).

New Quarantine Guidance for Vaccinated Individuals

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that fully vaccinated people exposed to someone with COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they:

  • Are fully vaccinated (two weeks or more following receipt of the second dose in a two-dose series, or two weeks or more following receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine).
  • Received their last dose within the last three months.
  • Have not had symptoms since the current COVID-19 exposure.

Fully vaccinated people should still watch for symptoms for 14 days after their exposure, continue to wear masks, practice social distancing, and keep their social circles small. An exception to the guidance is that vaccinated inpatients and residents in health care settings should continue to quarantine following an exposure to someone with COVID-19. Those who do not meet all three criteria above should continue to follow current quarantine guidance after exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.

New Mask Fitting Guidance

The CDC has made new recommendations on how to improve mask fitting to slow the spread of COVID-19 more effectively. Recommended strategies include wearing a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask, knotting the ear loops of a medical procedure mask, using a mask fitter, or using a nylon covering over a mask. Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Remote Summer Quarter Plans

Dear Colleague,

Based on current health data and the ongoing timeline for widespread vaccinations, the College will continue remote learning and operations through summer quarter (ending August 24, 2021). Information about fall quarter plans will be shared with the campus in the coming weeks after we have considered additional data.

Summer Quarter Classes

We will continue to offer primarily online, asynchronous courses, with limited exceptions for face-to-face learning in pre-approved programs. We are also exploring options for additional synchronous online and/or hybrid class offerings and will provide additional information as it becomes available. While so many of us are eager to return to campus in greater numbers, we also know the safest choice for our students, employees, and the community at this time is to continue to limit as much in-person gathering as possible.

Campus Summer Schedule

As with prior summer quarters, the College will move to public operating hours of Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. These summer operating hours will be in effect Monday, June 28 through Friday, September 3, 2021.

Supervisors are responsible for working with their staff to confirm remote operation summer schedules that meet the business needs of the College, as well as to inform the general public and the Shoreline community of the upcoming summer change to operating hours. Staff members need to discuss and confirm remote operation summer work schedules with their supervisors and ensure updated summer schedules are entered into the TLR system by the first week of June 2021. Please note: Staff may request to keep their current schedule (for example, five days of 8-hour shifts) and supervisors are encouraged to approve these requests where appropriate as long as the business needs of the College continue to be met.

If you have additional questions about summer business hours or staff schedules, please contact Human Resources.

Thank you,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
