A number of campus offices are currently recruiting student leaders for the 2021-2022 school year. If you’re interested in getting involved and want to represent and support your fellow students, check out the descriptions of available positions below for more information.

Arts & Entertainment Board (A&E)
A&E Board is currently hiring for two position types for next year: Event Coordinators help to plan and host a variety of fun events and activities for students, and Graphic Designers help to create fliers and promotional materials for student activities. Apply online by Friday, April 9, or contact mhsmith@shoreline.edu for more information.

Associated Student Government (ASG)
ASG provides a representative voice for all SCC students by overseeing the allocation and use of student fees, serving on campus communities, and providing opportunities for students to give feedback about their Shoreline experiences. There are 9 officer and 4 student representative positions available. Apply online by Friday, April 9, or contact smusnicki@shoreline.edu for more information.

International Student Ambassador (ISA)
ISAs assist admissions and outreach staff to connect with new students around the world via email and social media. ISAs also help with presentations, blog writing, video production, translating, and more. There are five language positions available (Arabic, Bahasa, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese). Apply online beginning Thursday, March 11 at 5:00pm PST, or contact ldu@shoreline.edu for more information.

International Student Leaders (ISL)
ISLs provide support to new and continuing international students to achieve cross-cultural experiences and academic success during their time here at Shoreline. ISLs support Orientation, plan events, provide mentorship, and help to engage with all international students on campus. Application will open in mid-March. Peer Activity Leader (PAL)
As a PAL you will mentor, engage, and support Japanese students on an international exchange program at Shoreline Community College. You will join the students in their class for one hour a day during summer and fall, and will lead small groups in a variety of fun projects. Peer Navigator – Gender Equity Center
Gender Equity Center seeks to support, educate, and advocate for students from under-represented populations, focusing on the ways in which those populations intersect with gender and sexuality. This is done by creating a safe and welcoming space where students can go for advice, community, or connection. Peer Navigators work with staff to plan, coordinate, and implement student-facing programing related to gender, sexuality, and equity. Peer Navigator – Multicultural Center
The Multicultural Center Peer Navigators help organize and promote sponsored events and activities centering around underrepresented student populations through peer to peer support, resources, and activities. Contact jardena@shoreline.edu to apply or for more information.

Resident Assistants (RAs)
RAs live on-campus in the college’s residence hall, 7000 Campus Living, and directly contribute to a community that supports students’ academic and personal success. This is done through one-on-one connections with students, planning social and educational events and activities, and upholding community standards. If you are eager to help others, have a creative side, and can think on your feet, this is the right job for you! Apply online by Friday, April 9 or contact mwinter@shoreline.edu for more information.

New Student Contact Email for Enrollment Services & Financial Aid

Enrollment Services and Financial Aid have changed their email addresses that students use to contact the area. (We have found that our prior email accounts, sccadmis@shoreline.edu, regdl@shoreline.edu, and finaid@shoreline.edu could not be easily understood over the phone.)

the Shoreline Faculty’s Vote of No Confidence in Shoreline President, Dr. Cheryl Roberts

Dear Shoreline Community College Campus Community,

I wish to begin my first letter to you – in my seven year tenure as a member of your Board of Trustees and as Board Chair by clearly stating my – and your entire Board of Trustees’ firm commitment and unwavering dedication to our College, to the entire Campus Community, and most especially to the Students – who entrust their education, their time, their (too often scarce) financial resources, their careers and their futures to each and every one of us at Shoreline Community College. Our Shoreline Students are the reason we are here. 

The 24 FEB 2021 Shoreline Board of Trustees meeting:

Many of you are already aware that the Board of Trustees received, carefully listened to, recognized, and heard a Constituent Report from the Shoreline Community College Federation of Teachers (SCCFT) President. The SCCFT President reported the results by the Faculty Senate Council of a vote of no confidence in Shoreline Community College’s President, Dr. Cheryl Roberts.

Our Faculty are the means by which we deliver the education that is entrusted by our students to Shoreline. The value of Shoreline’s Faculty cannot be overstated. Without the Faculty, we do not have an educational experience to provide to our Students, and without the support of Classified & Administrative Staff, the Faculty cannot effectively deliver that educational product.

Like our Students, the Faculty, the Classified Staff, the Administrative Staff and the Executive Team are ALL completely essential to the operation of the College. Your Board of Trustees has been appointed by our State’s democratically elected Governor to ensure the Washington State laws, rules, and regulations are adhered to and that we meet the educational needs of the Students who choose Shoreline for their education.

The Board of Trustees cannot effectively execute the responsibilities entrusted to us without full participation and collaboration between each and every one in the Campus Community. We must all partner and work together to keep the College moving forward and support our Students’ success. Our Students are the reason we are here.

Constituent Report to the Board of Trustees from Shoreline’s SCCFT President:

The Shoreline Faculty (as of FEB 2021) consists of 388 individual faculty members. The SCCFT President reported the results of the Faculty Senate vote of no confidence in President, Dr. Cheryl Roberts as follows:

  • 116 (of 388) faculty supported this vote of no confidence, comprising ~30% of Shoreline’s Faculty Senate.

The Faculty Senate Council provided a report to the Board of Trustees (see attached) and requested that their presentation of their vote of no confidence results be placed on the Board of Trustees’ 24 FEB 2021 agenda. I, as Chair of your Board of Trustees respectfully, but firmly declined this request as there is a constituent report for Shoreline Faculty. Your Board of Trustees has deep concerns with accepting the Faculty Senate’s vote of no confidence in President Dr. Cheryl Roberts for the following reason:

The Faculty Senate Council’s report consisted of and was based on entirely too many inaccuracies.

The Board of Trustees’ response to and position regarding the inaccurate statements articulated in the Shoreline Faculty Senate Council’s report. Herein are the facts the Board is relying on in evaluating the vote of no confidence:

  • Sound hiring practices are in place.
  • The College’s financial statements are current.
  • The College’s audits are current.
  • The Washington State Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC) did not find the College had committed any Unfair Labor Practices (ULP). 
  • PERC agreed with the Shoreline Community College Administration.
  • It is the Shoreline Faculty, not the Shoreline Administration, who is appealing PERC’s decision.

Accurate facts are paramount. The Board’s patience with and ability to continue listening to the relentless issuing of constituent statements that are not based on facts actually prevents the College from moving forward during a time when it is critical that we do so. None of us can change the past, but together we can build a better future.

We are all living through a global pandemic and its requisite year-long quarantine. These are certainly some of the most difficult times the College has ever faced. All Washington State colleges are suffering, as are all US Colleges, as well as colleges around the globe. Despite this, our finances and enrollment at Shoreline are better than most. Your Board of Trustees has confidence in all of our employees – Classified Staff, Faculty, Administrators, and our President, Dr. Cheryl Roberts. 

Your Board of Trustees has immense empathy for each and every one of our College’s employees who are all working through, despite, and during these difficult and unprecedented times.

Please know that your Board of Trustees remains committed to working collegially and constructively with the President and the entire Shoreline Campus Community to serve our diverse students and community.

Last Call for Day of Learning Proposals

Shoreline Faculty and Staff!

We’re extending the submission deadline for Day of Learning proposals to Monday, March 1st.  You can submit proposals HERE. Sessions will be in 50-minute blocks (presenters can request two back-to-back blocks) and facilitated online. They will need to follow accessibility standards and focus on this year’s theme: How Do We Foster Inclusive Change at Shoreline?

Facilitators do not need to be an expert on their proposed session topic; we are simply asking for proposals from employees who are passionate about issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Learning Team can provide some support to employees who want help in designing their session. Faculty and classified staff facilitators will be paid an hourly rate for leading their sessions on Day of Learning. Further details about dates and submission are below:

  • To submit, fill out a Proposal Submission Form
  • Submissions are due by March 1st
  • Sessions will 50 minute blocks (you can request two back-to-back blocks)
  • If you submitted a proposal last year, we encourage you to submit again

This Year’s Theme:

How Do We Foster Inclusive Change at Shoreline? Diversity. Equity. Inclusion. We know these words are part of Shoreline’s values, but a lack of consensus on their meaning has made it difficult to embody them and facilitate sustainable changes on our campus. Key questions also face us: How can we navigate difficult conversations about campus culture? How do our unique perspectives shape our understanding of institutional inequities? The goal for this year’s Day of Learning is to learn skills and gain knowledge that will create a more inclusive campus culture for supporting each other and serving our students. While engaging in sessions that center DEI, we will put our shared definitions into individual and collective action, and continue to work on our ongoing commitment to inclusive excellence and institutional change.

  • Virtual Admissions Events – Learn about all our virtual admissions events including Experience Shoreline, funding and aid workshops, and program-specific open houses. Navigate to the page: Under the Enrollment & Aid main menu drop down. See it 
  • Work Study Jobs – Students looking for work study jobs can find listings and instructions for applying. Navigate to the page: Under the Enrollment & Aid main menu drop down, click on Funding & Aid, then Financial Aid, then Types of Aid. On that page, you’ll find info about work study and a link to the Work Study program. Students are also provided this link in the Financial Aid Portal.  See it 
  • Take a Class – A landing page intended for use in advertising when marketing to students who are simply looking to take some courses at Shoreline. Navigate to the page: From the home page, click on the Explore Programs button. Scroll down to the heading “Just looking to take some classes?” Click on “Learn about taking college courses at Shoreline.” See it 
  • Student Life & Clubs – An overview of Shoreline student life and the clubs students can join (not to be confused with Campus Life). Navigate to the page: Use the main menu and click on Campus Life. Click on Student Life & Clubs. Also referenced on the Current Students page. See it

Pages with Significant or Notable Updates:  

  • Find My Registration Date – Added the credit chart and some guidance for how to use the Find My Date page. See it 
  • AP or IB Scores page – The Cambridge International crosswalk chart was added to the page. See it 
  • Transitional Studies redesign – The landing page was redesigned to help students better understand the offerings and provide a more visually intuitive navigation experience. See it 
  • Academic Calendar – You will now see a brief description for each item in the calendar, as well as a link to any related task (e.g: add/drop date links to the page about adding/dropping courses). See it 

Strategy & Design:

  • Improved Search Engine Marketing Campaigns – Worked with our vendor to improve our search engine advertising strategy, leading to increased click-through and conversion rates on our website.
  • Live Interactive Student Journey Map – Created a living interactive journey map that outlines student information needs, pain points, recommended improvements, etc. to help facilitate strategic decisions in SEM, Guided Pathways, and ctcLink work around the website and student communications.  
  • Additional Announcement Banner Templates – Allow for more options when adding banners to interior pages.
