Changes in the Facilities Department

Following Jason Francois’ departure at the end of July, I am pleased to announce that Pete Babington has accepted the temporary position of Acting Director of Facilities, effective Monday, August 3rd reporting to Dawn Beck, Vice President for Business & Administrative Services. The College anticipates opening a recruitment to permanently fill this Director of Facilities during Fall quarter 2020.

Pete will be responsible for administration of the College’s Maintenance, Custodial, Groundskeeping units as well as for Capital Projects.

Pete graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Construction Management and a certificate of Commercial Real Estate Development. Prior to accepting this position, he served as Associate Director and Director of Facilities at Highline College for 16 years, and most recently as doing Facilities Improvement Projects for Johnson Controls. Pete brings experience and a proven track record of success in the Facilities and Property Management area, which will be invaluable in meeting the departmental goals and objectives.

I am confident that Pete will be an excellent match for this position and a strong asset to the Facilities team. Pete will be located in Room 5105 and can be reached at (206) 546-4514 or at pbabington@shoreline.edu.

Please join me in welcoming Pete to the Shoreline Community College Facilities Department.

Apply & Aid web page changes to launch this Saturday

Due to logistical reasons, Communications & Marketing will launch the anticipated Apply & Aid web page updates this Saturday, August 8 at midnight, rather than at the same time as the home page changes next week.

On August 8, some pages within the Apply & Aid section of the site may not be available on our website for approximately 5-10 minutes while they are being launched. All changes should be finalized and accurately reflected on the site by 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

What will be affected: Pages that live on www.shoreline.edu under the menu tab labeled Apply & Aid.

What will not be affected: The class schedule, registration portal, or any other transactional service pages that require a student login.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Apply & Aid web project, you can review the project summary and outline of the changes by visiting the summary article.

If you have questions about the changes or find any issues once the changes are made, please contact websupport@shoreline.edu. We will be monitoring the site very closely throughout Sunday and early Monday morning for any potential issues that may arise. Thank you!

Zoom Hall (“Virtual Campus Meeting”): Wednesday, August 12, 2020; 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Dear Colleague,

Please join the Executive Team (ET) and me for a Zoom Hall on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. We want to provide a brief update on the budget and process fall quarter; the Washington State COVID-19 Higher Education Reopening Plan and how it aligns with our fall opening; a preview of Fall Convocation and Opening Week, followed by questions and answers (Q&A).

We received inquiries about asking questions “live” during the Zoom Hall’s Q&A segment. If you prefer to ask your question verbally during the Q&A segment of the August 12th Zoom Hall, please send an email to Lori Yonemitsu at lyonemitsu@shoreline.edu no later than 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 12 with the subject line: Request to ask question verbally – August 12, 2020 Zoom Hall. (This will assist Randy Gottfried, our meeting facilitator, tremendously.)

We also received inquiries about how one can submit a question anonymously during the Q&A segment of our Zoom Hall. Randy Gottfried will share how to do this right before we commence with the Q&A segment of the August 12th Zoom Hall.

New website home page and site navigation coming August 11

Illustration of a megaphone and confetti with the words "Coming Soon."Get ready for some major updates to the College website!

On August 11, in addition to major changes to the Apply & Aid pages on our website, Communications & Marketing will be launching a fully redesigned home page and refined site-wide navigation for our primary website, www.shoreline.edu.

We’ll provide more information about the research and the process in the near future, but for now, here are some key features and highlights:

  • User-Centered and Research-Based Changes: Over 200 participants, including current and prospective students, faculty and staff, were involved in our web research studies.
  • Improved Accessibility: Based on our accessibility audit conducted in fall 2019, improvements were made to bring our site up to WCAG 2.1 requirements, ensuring all who come to our site are able to access the information they need.
  • Intuitive Navigation: Refined navigation based on data and user testing, including a revamped main menu, header, footer, and a search button that reveals the search bar along with links to the most commonly searched terms.
  • Adaptable and Agile: The back-end of the home page was redeveloped so that we can more easily make incremental improvements to the website as needed.
  • Dynamic Content: Features such as dynamic news feeds were created so that we can distribute our news blog content to the home page and throughout the site more easily.
  • Modern Design and Brand Alignment: New design elements and “snippets” were developed that allow us to distinguish our site from other colleges while reinforcing our brand identity and adding depth and energy to the site.

This project comes at a critical time to help support enrollment and retention efforts, especially while the College is operating remotely. While some changes may feel new or different for employees, it’s designed for prospective and current students to be able to find the information they need to navigate the College much more easily and intuitively. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we launch these updates!
