Check out this week’s new waves of gratitude submissions!

• A wave of gratitude from Maria-lynn Olsson to Sue Anne Lemkin !
Sue Anne is kind, gentle, helpful, available, and confident in her leadership. I appreciate her honesty when she doesn’t know the next step or when something is a bit of a bummer. She is skilled at keeping us all motivated, calm, and laughing.

She’s the best boss I’ve had thus far in all my jobs. I am so grateful to be part of her mini team!

• A wave of gratitude to Sarah Pearce! Sarah does so much behind the scenes to support the SES division. She it one of the foundational reasons that commencement succeeds every year!

• A wave of gratitude to Lori Yonemitsu! I think people would be hard pressed to find an employee at the college who works as hard as Lori. However, the more amazing thing about her is that she does is with joy, and detail.

• A wave of gratitude to Yushin Wung! This is not for anything in particular, but just for the fact that she is always so caring in help everyone she comes in contact with! She knows how to get projects/ideas moving and is an always welcomed presence to talk to.

Message from the President: Response to pernicious racism in our country

Dear Colleague,

I’m heartened by the continual chorus of voices in our community and around the country demanding racial justice. At the College, we postponed our Campus Budget Zoom Hall meeting last Friday so employees who wanted to attend the community protest marches and demonstrations were able to do so. At the same time, I’m disheartened by the situation leading to the killing of Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday and know this weighs on our hearts as we look for actions to address pernicious racism in our country.

We are all tired, sickand tired of mere words. I’m grateful to share a good example of taking action on our campus. Last week, I convened a joint conversation with Tom Genest and Dr. Amy Kinsel, Co-chairs of the Faculty Senate, Isaac Tchao, Associated Student Government (ASG) President, and Phillip King, VP for Student Learning, regarding concerns I had heard from students about the impact of the current situations on their studies. As a result, the Shoreline Faculty Senate sent an email to all students letting them know the different ways faculty can support them as they bring spring quarter to a close. I appreciated the Co-chairs and the ASG President meeting with me and the VP of Student Learning which led to a specific communication in support of our students during these most tender times.

We need each other more than ever as we address two pandemics: an ongoing public health crisis and centuries-long racism culminating in social unrest. We need each other as we focus on dismantling systemic racism. I’m proud that Shoreline clearly states in our Community Standard statement, our College does not tolerate hateful, violent, or discriminatory actions that target any person or group based on their beliefs, customs, identity, or affiliations. I hope you will join me in recommitting for the 2020-21 academic year to a deep examination of our own practices to close the inequities in our students’ experience. In the coming weeks and months, the College will emerge with demonstrations of support that may include: expanded support for affinity groups for staff of color and employees committed to anti-racismimplementing strategies to recruit and retain students and staff of color; and ongoing education that addresses anti-racism.

During this time of great disruption, if you or someone you know at the College is experiencing distress and is in need of emotional or mental support, please know there are resources for you. Students are encouraged to access free counseling by phone or video chat with the Counseling Center(206-546-4594). Employees may access services and support any time through ourEmployee Assistance Program (877-313-4455). Additionally, we’d like to remind you about the Bias Incident Report Form.

As we bring spring quarter and the academic year to a close, we have much to do in support of our students, and our students have much to do to prepare to complete their courses. I’m grateful to our students for believing in Shoreline and entrusting their educational experience with us and to our dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators who have answered the call to provide learning and support in a remote environment.

May we find moments of peace within the support of our campus community.

With a heart full of gratitude,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Positive comments from our Shoreline Students:

-Comments gathered from a survey from e-Learning.
Question: “Knowing that we all will be learning online for the Spring quarter, and that this is not everyone’s first choice, what can you control as an online student? Is there anything Shoreline can do to make online learning more effective for you? If so, what?”

· As a student, I can control my outlook on the situation. I cannot control the situation itself, but I can shift my perspective to see it in a more positive light. Shoreline is already doing enough to make online learning more effective for me, personally.

· As a student, I can control my workflow and make sure I do not get in over my head. Shoreline is doing a good job making sure I (as with all students) have good access to support.

· As a student, I can control the distractions around me. It is my responsibility to make sure that I am in a distraction free zone so that I can focus on any given tasks or assignments. Shoreline provided really informative links on how to properly engage in online learning, which could be used as a reference if I feel a bit overwhelmed throughout the quarter.

· As a student, I can control what I work on and when. It is within my power to create an effective and pleasant work environment. Thus far, Shoreline has been doing a good job providing the resources I need to succeed online. As long as you all keep up the good work, I’m happy.

· As a student, I can make online learning work for me by adjusting my attitude and routine accordingly. I can make a designated work space, work on my time management skills, and make sure I am eating and sleeping right. Though I may not have control over these scary and uncertain times, these things I have listed are within my control. I think Shoreline is doing a really great job, keeping us all on track under these extreme circumstances,  thank you!

· As a student, I can organize my time and make a comfortable space to do my work. Allowing myself breaks and using that time to be physical and away from screens has benefitted me in the past. Shoreline has provided many resources that have supported me over the years and shaped the successful student that I have become.

· As a student, I need to follow all of the instructions that are given to me and make myself more familiar with the things I am not yet understand about canvas and zoom conference. I feel like Shoreline has been doing a great job in terms of guiding the students and teach them the basics of canvas through this online learning assignments and instructions on the first week of school.
