Shoreline transitions to dynamic, electronic catalog

As part of ongoing efforts to communicate clearly and accurately about all of Shoreline’s academic offerings, Shoreline will be transitioning to a database-driven, dynamic, electronic catalog for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. Funded by a Shoreline innovation grant, the catalog will be created and maintained using Acalog, a software application from DIGARC.

A cross-functional team from Communications and Marketing, Advising, Curriculum Committee, Technology Support Services, and Dean Team submitted the innovation fund proposal, noting strong benefits to students and the College to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility of catalog development and publishing. The new electronic catalog will support and enhance forthcoming changes in the College’s website.

What will the change mean for you?

There will be some significant changes coming, particularly in advising students about course selection. Most notable among these are:

    • The full catalog will still be printable, but will have a different look and feel from our previous printed catalog. For samples of colleges using Digarc for their catalog solution, visit Edmonds Community College or Highline College.
    • As students are selecting courses, they can immediately read course descriptions by clicking on a course number. For example, in the list of courses that fulfill the social sciences distribution requirements, students can just click on the course and learn about the course, its prerequisites, and when it is typically offered.
    • All program planning guides and major preparation sheets will be captured within the catalog, not in separate documents, reducing the possibility for inaccuracy in reporting program requirements and recommendations.
    • The reviewing process for catalog and planning guide materials will be moved online and can be done from any browser, with all changes tracked and documented.
    • Some of the content from the planning guides, particularly information geared toward prospective students, will be captured on program option web pages;  whereas detailed information about program requirements and recommended courses will be included in the catalog.

If you have been involved in the planning guide or catalog revision process in the past, expect further communication in the next few days about what the process will look like this year and next.

Bayta Maring (bmaring@shoreline.edu) and Jenifer Aydelotte (jaydelotte@shoreline.edu) are the primary contacts for questions, with Jenifer taking on the role of “catalog manager.” They will be receiving extensive training on the editing process over the next several weeks. The new catalog will be published September 2018.

Music student advances in national vocal competition

Shoreline Community College music student Trevor Eaden has advanced to the national semi-finals of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) vocal adjudications, and will travel to Las Vegas to compete at the NATS conference in late June.

Trevor, who studies voice with music faculty member Fred Lokken, will be one of just fourteen participants from across the country in the Men’s Lower College Classical Division. The top three finishers in each category will be awarded up to two thousand dollars in scholarship funds.

Congratulations to Trevor, and good luck in Vegas!

A Memorial Day message from President Cheryl Roberts

Dear Colleague,

In the words of Arthur Ashe, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”

On Memorial Day, we commemorate those who gave their lives in service to our country. As we prepare to enjoy a relaxing holiday weekend with family and friends, may we also take a moment to offer our gratitude to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice during military service. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.

Please join me on Tuesday, May 29 for our Memorial Day Flag-Raising Ceremony at the flagpole in front of Building 1000 at 12:30 p.m. to pay tribute to all those who have died in service to our country.

Gratefully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Road closure behind PUB beginning May 29

Dear Colleague,

Beginning Tuesday, May 29, the roadway that runs along the back side of the PUB (Building 9000) will be closed. The closure is necessary so that contractors can dig a trench to accommodate the wastewater line for our new student residence hall. The closure is expected to last two weeks (until June 8) and will likely be intermittent rather than continuous.

A map showing the campus roadways is attached, with the location of the closure indicated with a blue rectangle. In order to reach parking lots that would ordinarily be accessed by means of this road, it will be necessary to drive around on the main campus roadway. It may be easiest to use the West Gate to access the main roadway.

We greatly appreciate your patience. If you have any questions about this closure, please contact Edwin Lucero in Safety & Security (elucero@shoreline.edu) or me. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Stuart Trippel

Senior Executive Director & CFO
