From President Kahn: Working Together to Support and Assess Student Learning
Dear faculty colleagues,
Two evaluators from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), our accrediting agency, recently visited campus to follow-up on a recommendation related to student learning outcomes assessment. The evaluators were struck by the high level of engagement and commitment of our faculty in ensuring students are learning. I personally am looking forward to bringing together the phenomenal talent and expertise of Shoreline faculty with a comprehensive planning process that ensures all students are learning.
First, thanks to all of you who have worked so hard in building foundational pieces of learning outcomes assessment work over the past seven years. The next phase of this work is to make sure that not only are we assessing learning in a coherent, regular, and systematic way, but that we use assessment results to inform planning and allocation of resources at the College, such as staffing support.
The good news is that we have made some changes that will align our work more consistently with the requirements of the accreditation standards. The College has moved some folks from the institutional assessment and data management unit into a new division called Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (P.I.E.). We are currently hiring for an Executive Director who will report directly to the President to ensure that planning is meeting the Board of Trustees’ expectations of the institution. In addition, we now have dedicated staffing in place to support assessment of student learning efforts: Acting Director of Learning Outcomes Assessment (Romina Plozza) and Learning Outcomes Assessment Consultant (Bayta Maring). These two areas (P.I.E. and Learning Outcomes Assessment) are working collaboratively to ensure that we have both the institutional- and instruction-specific work on an annual cycle tied to future program changes and budget development.
Finally, we have new resources available:
· Learning Outcomes Assessment Handbook
· Learning Outcomes Assessment Sharepoint Site.
Please review these resources prior to your upcoming division and departmental meetings, as you will be engaging in learning outcomes assessment work in those settings.
What’s even more exciting? We will be collaborating to design measures of success that will guide planning and assessment.
Thank you for all that you do for our students!
Jack

EVENTS AND NEWS
Hi folks—as usual, it has been a whirlwind week. Hope you are doing well. This past weekend we lost power alongside 180,000 other homes in the area. Ours was only out for a couple of days, so not too bad though it was cold. Fortunately, we have two dogs and lots of blankets so that helped! I hope those without power have been restored. If you are having difficulties as a function of the storm and need some assistance at Shoreline, please feel free to contact your supervisor for options.
The highlight of the week for me was the Foundation Student Success Luncheon. Wow, it was packed with people!! The room was completely full, and folks attended online as well. It was so great to see so many people advocating for students and raising funds to help our students, especially in such a challenging time. I want to thank Diana Dotter and her team Michelle Cimaroli and Josh Krupke for all the incredible work they put into this stellar event. Speaking of being packed, the International Transfer Fair event was equally packed! It was so great to see our students connecting with over 70 colleges and universities from across the country. What a great event and resource! Special thanks to Yushin Wung, Leanne Almughirah, Ginger Villanueva, Cynthia Okawara, John Tankersley, Jessica Galan, and Samira Pardanani for all your work on this!
Finally, I want to thank the faculty and staff who have been coming to share experiences and ideas with me this week. In the four months that I have been here, these 1:1 (one on one) meetings have been especially useful for my learning. Feel free to join a scheduled meeting (below) or if those do not work, I will always find the time.
Cheers, Jack

Help Desk planned downtime and transition to new system 11/16/22
Hello Shoreline Community,
Exciting news! Shoreline Community College is moving to a new Support Center as announced earlier (Help Desk Transition DAAG Article from Oct 31). The Support Center (support.shoreline.edu) is where you find helpful articles and submit requests. Now we can include more departments and provide better support to our students, staff, and faculty.
Here is the timeline for the transition between the two systems:
- On Wednesday, November 16th from 7am until 1pm, Shoreline Support Center (support.shoreline.edu) will be offline while we migrate to the new system.
- During this time, please use one of the following options to get assistance:
- For ctcLink, Password, Canvas, and other issues that can be resolved with a 1:1 virtual session please join our Zoom room at www.shoreline.edu/ZoomRoom.
- If you are on campus and need in-person assistance:
- Hardware, Software, Wi-Fi, etc.: please visit TSS in lower level of Library, Room 4122
- Enrollment Services & Financial Aid: Please visit Enrollment Services
- eLearning Services & Classroom Support Services: Please visit eLearning in 1200 Building
- Continuing Education & Rentals: Please visit eLearning in 1200 building
- For security change requests, network account setup, etc. we ask that you please hole the request until migration is complete to avoid risk of your request getting delayed.
- On November 16th TSS will send out a campus announcement once the move is completed stating that the migration is now complete.
- Starting the afternoon of the 16th you will see emails stating that your requests were moved to the new system. Please have patience as agents move them over and adjust to the new system.
- All communications will come from Support@shoreline.edu.
Have questions about the new Support Center? Please visit a Q&A using
- Support Center Q&A Session
