Call for Proposals for 2021 Day of Learning

Shoreline Faculty and Staff!

The DEI Learning Team invites you all to submit proposals for leading a session at this year’s Day of Learning on April 30th, 2021! Sessions will be 50 minutes in length and facilitated online. They will need to follow accessibility standards and focus on this year’s theme: How Do We Foster Inclusive Change at Shoreline?

Facilitators do not need to be an expert on their proposed session topic; we are simply asking for proposals from employees who are passionate about issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Learning Team can provide some support to employees who want help in designing their session. Faculty and classified staff facilitators will be paid an hourly rate for leading their sessions on Day of Learning. Further details about dates and submission are below:

Proposal Submission Details:

This Year’s Theme:

How Do We Foster Inclusive Change at Shoreline? Diversity. Equity. Inclusion. We know these words are part of Shoreline’s values, but a lack of consensus on their meaning has made it difficult to embody them and facilitate sustainable changes on our campus. Key questions also face us: How can we navigate difficult conversations about campus culture? How do our unique perspectives shape our understanding of institutional inequities? The goal for this year’s Day of Learning is to learn skills and gain knowledge that will create a more inclusive campus culture for supporting each other and serving our students. While engaging in sessions that center DEI, we will put our shared definitions into individual and collective action, and continue to work on our ongoing commitment to inclusive excellence and institutional change.

Sample Session Proposal:

  • Proposer: Brigid Nulty
  • Description: Exploring and developing a shared definition of “Inclusive Pedagogy.” I hope to lead a online activity during which participants compare and integrate definitions from multiple sources. Together we will develop a shared understanding of what Inclusive Pedagogy means, and what it can look like in action.
  • Area(s) of Focus: Varied, but especially racial equity, ableism, classism (e.g., “first-gen” vs “continuing gen”)
  • Format: Workshop. Pre-reading required
  • Collaborators: Possibly someone from FLC
  • Additional information: Would need advance sign-up/registration, so that I can assign pre-reading

Message from Board Chair D’Ambrosio: Presidential Search

Dear Campus Community,

Many of you are already aware from President Roberts’ Monday (01 FEB 2021) message, that she has provided us with notice of her retirement, effective 30 JUN 2022.  This date coincides with the conclusion of Dr. Roberts’ current contract.

We are all deeply appreciative of Dr. Roberts’ (17 month) advance notice. This will hopefully afford the College sufficient time, necessary to conduct a thorough and conclusive nation-wide search for our next President.

Your Board of Trustees will be engaging with the SCC Campus Community in the coming weeks and months to articulate and define the Presidential search process and specify the qualifications necessary for a candidate to successfully serve as President of our College.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my distinct honor to express our appreciation to President Roberts for her luminary and steadfast leadership, and her continuous dedication to our students -who have entrusted their education to SCC.

President Roberts has -during her seven-year tenure as SCC’s President consistently demonstrated an unwavering dedication to the entire campus community.  We are deeply appreciative for her perseverance through these most difficult times.

Finding a replacement to fill her shoes will be a sufficiently daunting task.  We are therefore all the more deeply appreciative of the ample notice President Roberts has provided us.

With best regards and our deep, abiding appreciation for your unwavering dedication to the College, and for the knowledge, erudition, skill and educational excellence that each of you bring to our college every day, we remain, sincerely yours,

Catherine Post D’Ambrosio, PhD, RN
Chair, Board of Trustees, Shoreline Community College

Notice of Data Breach Related to State Auditor’s Office

Fellow employees, we were recently notified of a data breach that may impact state employees.

The Washington State Auditor’s Office, a separately elected official, informed us about a security incident involving a third-party software service vendor the SAO was using. The incident, which occurred last month, may have exposed the personal and financial information of about 1.6 million Washingtonians who filed unemployment claims in 2020. This includes many state employees. To be clear, this was not the result of any actions of anyone at the Employment Security Department. It was a third-party vendor that was working for the State Auditor. It does not make the impact any less important, but it is important to note this is not the result of any actions or inactions at ESD.

We are awaiting further details from the Auditor’s Office on the extent of the data breach and the information compromised, but wanted to share the latest information we have right now. We will keep you informed as we learn more about this situation.

Employees whose information may have been compromised will be notified directly by the State Auditor’s Office. The Office of Financial Management and SAO are both setting up websites to help ensure employees are apprised of any new developments and available resources. Both are expected to go live today. OFM site will be ofm.wa.gov/saodatabreach. The SAO site will be sao.wa.gov/breach2021. There will also be a SAO call center set up later this week for employees to get assistance and resources with these issues, we will make sure you have it as soon as it is available.

We know this is not good news and we plan to help SAO and help you, in any manner possible. While you patiently await contact from SAO regarding your personal risk, please do not contact the Employment Security Department. They are not responsible for this problem and are not the appropriate place to troubleshoot issues that arise from it.

We will be looking to our HR and payroll staff and using DAAG to keep you up to date on any related process changes or recommended actions. We know you are eager to get this taken care of, as are we.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Executive Team at Shoreline

Update on Shoreline’s Early Childhood Education Program

Based on the Board’s approval of the 2020-2021 budget, including faculty reductions, Shoreline has begun the process of sunsetting the Early Childhood Education program.  Starting in spring quarter 2021, the program will not be accepting new students. Courses that are part of the program will be offered in spring quarter, based on current student needs.

After spring 2021, there will be two primary options for Shoreline students to complete their Shoreline education degrees and certificates.  Shoreline will make every effort to ensure these options enable students to complete their certificates and/or degrees in the same amount of time, in the same modality (online), and for the same cost as originally planned.

  • The first teach-out option will be through Washington Online (WAOL).  With this option, students continue to attend Shoreline, have a Shoreline transcript, and enroll in Shoreline classes using their Shoreline Canvas accounts.  The online courses are taught by various faculty throughout the state and include students enrolled at different colleges.

  • The second will be through a teach-out agreement with another Washington community college.  There are several opportunities for partnering with other colleges on teach-out agreements, and preliminary conversations have begun. Expect an update on specific teach-out plans in mid-February.

Students currently enrolled in this program (as of winter 2021), will receive a more detailed email about these options and next steps by February 15, 2021. Each student will work with an advisor to develop their own teach-out plan. Those students who have previously been enrolled in the program within the last two years will also receive notification and options for degree completion. The Office of Student Learning is identifying how to allocate and enhance advising resources for these students. If you have questions about this process, please contact Brigid Nulty, Acting Associate Dean of Business, Communication Studies, and Social Sciences (bnulty@shoreline.edu).

Thank you for your patience as we undertake this process.

Sincerely,

Phillip King
Vice President for Student Learning, Equity, and Success
