Dear Colleague,

As we wind up our spring quarter and this academic year, I want to first, thank you for the extraordinary work you have accomplished this year and congratulate you on the great outcomes we are making together. Below you will read about our success in hiring, tenure appointments, enrollment gains, and community engagement. Our summer construction projects and fall convocation planning will keep us busy over the next quarter.

VP Bob Francis Retires
Congratulations and thank you to Bob Francis for his 23 years of service to our students and college. As a faculty member, Bob taught economics and international studies and was awarded the outstanding faculty award in 1999. In 2011 he was appointed Acting Dean for Social Sciences, Library, and Parent Child Center. He was appointed as Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Instruction in 2014.

Please join me in thanking Bob for his service. Bob says that his time at Shoreline has been one of the most professional rewarding experiences of his life. “I deeply and genuinely enjoy helping students and staying in touch with them,” Bob said.

He has helped thousands of our students reach their goals. Please come on June 1^st from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the boardroom to celebrate Bob’s retirement.

Alison Stevens, Ph.D. Named as EVP of Academic and Student Affairs
Please welcome Dr. Stevens to our college on June 20 from her most recent post as EVP of Instruction and Student Affairs with Everett Community College. She knows us and our college well as she served here for six months in 2014 as Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.

“I am delighted that this opportunity allows me to return to Shoreline and work with the dedicated faculty and staff and new leadership provided by Dr. Roberts,” Stevens said. “I am excited to share my passion and commitment to continue Shoreline’s exceptional work focused on student achievement and success.”

Dr. Stevens’ experience, leadership skills, and strong interest in returning to Shoreline will complement the work ahead of us and help students “finish what they start”.

We will have a Meet and Greet for Dr. Stevens on June 20th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the board room. I hope you’ll join me in welcoming her to campus!

Faculty tenured and new hires
Nearly 200 of our faculty and staff have participated in screening committees this year, resulting in 48 new employees hired into a number of departments. Thank you to those of you who helped bring top talent to Shoreline. In addition, nine faculty members received tenure this year and my congratulations to each of them for their skills and dedication to our students.

Enrollment Headed in the Right Direction
For the first time in five years, spring quarter enrollment has grown! 45 quarterly FTE’s were added this quarter, and we are focused on continuing investments to keep the momentum going to increase our FTE students. Year-to-date our annual FTE count is down, however, we have hit our tuition revenue goal. Thank you to so many who have worked so hard to make these student gains.

American Honors Launched at Shoreline
Shoreline Community College joins an elite group of only 10 community colleges in the country that offer the American Honors Program. The program, which launches this fall, has attracted 75 applicants to date.

Students receive enhanced academic support and the program offers a track record of success for the students transferring to a university of their choice. The American Honors program gives students access to the National Transfer Network composed of over 75 top colleges and universities across the US. These schools actively recruit American Honors program graduates and have transfer agreements, with some even offering ensured admission to program graduates. Faculty receive additional support from American Honors instructional designers, and students have an advisor and success coach who work alongside them.

Avid for Higher Education (AHE) Comes to Shoreline
Yvonne Ortiz, a coach from the national organization, AHE, has spent time on our campus listening to the needs of faculty, staff, and students and orienting herself to the culture of Shoreline Community College. She will work closely with the college beginning in the fall as we implement many aspects of our student success and excellence in learning goals defined in our 2016-21 Strategic Plan.

Strategic Plan Moving from Discussion to Implementation
The Campus Update on May 20^th focused on the 2016-2021 Strategic Plan implementation. For those of you able to attend, thank you for your participation, which will improve our implementation plans. We heard many important questions and comments, which will help the Steering Committee sponsors refine their work over this summer. By fall, we will be ready to implement the Steering Committee membership, charter of work, frequency of meetings, and timelines to reach goals in 2016–17. If you are interested in participating in a Steering Committee to push the work forward, the online application is available from June 1 through September 23. Your participation is a clear demonstration of the “intentional inclusion” we have established in Goal 3 of Shoreline Community College’s Strategic Plan. Thank you again!

Scholarships, Alumni, and Emeritus Employees
180 students have applied for nearly 100 scholarships managed by the Shoreline Community College Foundation. Faculty, employees, and donors review applications for the scholarships, many established in memory of loved ones. Scholarships are awarded to students across many departments and may cover tuition, books, fees, and required supplies. Even emergency funds are available from generous donors so students can cover expenses including housing, utilities, daycare, and transportation. The 2016 Scholarship Celebration hosted by the Shoreline Community College Foundation is June 23rd. The event brings donors and scholarship recipients together to visit and get acquainted.

The Foundation invites all Shoreline Community College alumni, friends, and associates to become inaugural members of our new Alumni & Friends community. Members will receive exclusive benefits, such as discounts on hotels, insurance, and campus events. They will also receive special event invitations and a welcome gift. SIFF at Shoreline
We are in the midst of Seattle International Film Festival at Shoreline, a first on our campus! Our state-of-the-art technology in both projection and sound makes the theater on our campus a sought after location for the film festival, the largest in the United States. A former film student at Shoreline, Nick Terry, presented a world premiere of his film, “Finding October” over the weekend. Producers, writers, actors, and directors have attended the screenings for Q & A with audiences.

We have welcomed hundreds of community members so far, and heard great feedback from them on the high quality of our theater and technology. It’s a great way to introduce many people to our campus, and for us to reach out as a community gathering place. The festival continues through June 4 on campus. Come and join the crowd of eager filmgoers.

Summer Construction
Sunshine, warm weather, and summer mean we will be working hard in the next months on a number of construction projects. There are two scheduled walkabouts for those who want to see and hear about the work in progress: Wednesday, June 15^th from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. or Thursday, June 16th from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Please meet at the Administration building to join the tours. Be prepared to come back in the fall to some wonderful improvements to our beautiful campus!

Fall Convocation
We are already planning for Fall Convocation and Opening Week of the college. Mark your calendars for a full day of learning and reconnection on Wednesday, September 14^th. Opening Week will have opportunities for professional learning, as well as time to meet with your colleagues, welcome new employees, and prepare for the term and the year ahead!

Following last year’s Fall Convocation and Opening Week events, we heard from many of you that it was valuable to learn together and reconnect. Beginning with Fall Convocation on Wednesday, September 14^th to the first day of class, September 21, there will be lots of ways to start the year off recharged and ready to engage! Planning is underway and you will receive more information after Labor Day with the schedule and events.
