EVENTS AND NEWS  

Folks, this week has been nuts. I imagine it has been for you as well, with finals and all kinds of projects ending. But we are almost there! Thanks to everyone who attended the Community Check-in. I really appreciate it given how busy everyone is! 

This week I had the pleasure of traveling down to Bates College to present “Innovative Partnerships in Biotech” with Phillip King & Guy Hamilton to the Washington State Board. Guy did a great job describing our model of partnering with high schools and industry and connecting students with paid internships while they take college courses with us. Board members were very impressed, and Shoreline got some well-deserved great press for the training our faculty are providing! Speaking of the State Board, our Executive Director for the State Board Paul Francis toured Shoreline last Friday, visiting several program spaces and chatting with some of our faculty and staff. Mr. Francis said, “On behalf of everyone at the SBCTC, a huge thank you to you and your leadership team for taking time out of your busy schedules to present to the board. I’m a huge fan of the Biotech Technician Training Program, and now the board is too! Thank you for hosting me on Friday at Shoreline. I learned a lot about the programs you offer, and the students enrolled in them. My team and I look forward to returning to both Shoreline and Bates next year!”. 

One of the highlights of the week was the (Re) United Shoreline Employee Visual, Performing, and Literary Arts Exhibition in the Admin building. The work created by our own staff and faculty is so impressive! The event was lovely as well. I really enjoyed chatting with folks but even more, I appreciated seeing people connect and enjoy being with one another while celebrating their creativity. Special thanks to Zak Mazur, the Arts Faculty, and the Shoreline CC Foundation for funding the treats!  

Earlier in the week, one of our colleagues mentioned in an email to me that the college had recently made an appointment for one of the acting positions and was concerned because I had stated we would not be doing that. My original intent was to end the appointments of permanent positions (unless under rare circumstances etc.), however, I am now looking into whether it makes sense to have a more open process for acting positions as well. I appreciated that feedback and wanted to share it with you. I’ll keep you posted. Speaking of appointments, please see the email sent earlier today about one possible appointment and the process being explored to do so.  

Finally, the Governor’s budget was released today and focuses on housing, climate change, and mental health amongst other items. While not all items we asked for in our system were supported, there are a lot of positive items proposed including the governor recommending funding our STEAM building! The college will release a summary of those items soon, but until then here is a summary available on the web.

• Faculty Focus: Grading in ctcLink Drop-in Support. Join our new ctcLink Faculty Lead, Heather Munsell, to have your grading questions answered via Zoom.

• Classified Supervisors and Admin/Exempt staff are being trained in how to use available reporting tools to delve into their budgets on ctcLink. If you have questions about budgets in ctcLink, please reach out to your supervisor.

Foundation Events: 

The Foundation is in the process of reviewing scholarship applications. If you are available to be a reviewer, please contact mcimaroli@shoreline.edu. It is a great way to support our students and insure an equitable distribution of scholarship resources. 

Student volunteers work at sporting events in the region and donate what they would be paid to Athletics scholarships. This fall student volunteers have raised $13,898!

Grants:

The Grants Office is working to consolidate information about all grants on campus, including current awards, proposals in progress, and ideas for new projects.
